What are you Ingesting?
As you walk to through the aisles in your local grocery store to buy your weekly groceries would you think of placing chemicals in your cart to make dinner? That is essentially what is being put in your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Genetically modified organism are found in our food, animals, and bacteria. Genetically modified organism should be labeled on all products globally because they go against nature and they have a negative effect on the human body and the environment. This method is a modern way to increase the production of food in the United States. As we are devolipng this new for of production the question of the safety of this consumption began to arise to the public. Genetecally modified organism change the DNA structure of the plant, animal, or bacteria by causing change in its structure. Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen developed genetic engineering in 1973 through the process of removing one gene and adding it onto another enzyme. Regulations and safety measure were placed onto this testing in the Asimolomar Conference in 1975. The conference was deemed safe by a group of government officials, scientist, and lawyers. Large corperations were authorized to the ownership of genetically modified organisms five years later by the United States Supreme Court. The decision improved usage by allowing experimental testing on croups to expand ways to increase food
Most Americans love the low cost, prepackaged, great tasting food that is convenient to buy and prepare. These prepackaged or processed foods are normally made to be faster, cheaper and usually taste great but they are loaded with bizarre, unpronounceable chemicals that, if you saw them in their pre-processed state, you would never consider putting in your mouth. Emulsifiers, preservatives, colorants, stabilizers, artificial sweeteners, texturizers and even bleach can be found in most processed foods. On average, Americans spend 90% of their food budget on these types of foods which is found to contribute to the leading causes of obesity, auto immune disease, diabetes and even cancer.
Many will argue that Genetically Modified Organisms(GMOs) are not safe for human consumption, however they are almost inevitable for our everyday food consumption. Some argue that the recent increase in gluten intolerance is caused by GMO foods (Argument against). Other state that the risk to humans by GMO’s is relatively small (The GMO”). The bottom line is what people put into their bodies is a personal choice and a person should be able to easily tell if a product has been genetically modified or not.
“Eat your vegetables, they're good for you”, The words a kid never wants to hear. People scan food packages for whole grains and fibers, avoid sugar, and don’t even think about buying something with trans fats. Just when people thought they knew how to eat healthy, there's another problem: Genetically Modified Organisms. Some opponents would have you believe these ingredients are the dietary curse of the decade. How concerned should people really be though? This is one of the most debated questions around the world. Many environmental organizations protest against genetic engineering, but numerous companies continue to use it in food production. The issue of Genetically Modified foods has been investigated by many different scientists for many
Genetically modified organisms are created through the use of biotechnological methods, in which genes from one organism
In todays society, people are more concerned about what they put into their body. They eat healthy and maintain a stable diet, but unknown to a number of these people is their food may have been tampered with in the form of Genetically Modified Organisms or, for short, GMO's. Genetically Modified Organisms are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered to favor a certain characteristic or trait which is already in the DNA. This includes enhancing the DNA in plants to make them bigger, invincible to pests, or invincible towards weeds. Although, the reason why GMO's are a controversial topic is because of lack of knowledge. Genetically Modified Organisms are risky and potentially to dangerous to be handling because of the unknown side effects
Is Genetically Modified food overrated? Do facts and evidence prove this point? Well, Genetically Modified food or GMO food is developed from the altered DNA of an organism. This engineered food was first introduced to the public and placed on market in the early 1990s. Since then, GMO has presented concerns throughout the country of the United States of America and it is my job to present a sound structure for this argument of concern.
“Today we use the term ‘genetically modified’ to refer to food produced from plants or animals which have had their genes changed by scientists in the laboratory rather than farmers in the field,” said by Nick Middleton (51). Genetically modified foods have become a hot topic in the world. People have still not been able to label it as a “Frankenstein food or a weapon against starvation” (Middleton 51). Genetically modified foods should be allowed for public consumption because it helps deal with the issue of world hunger, it improves overall quality of food, and it helps the environment.
In the past few years, society has been made more aware of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Because of this, GMOs are being replaced in diets with more natural and organic options. GMOs have been researched and found to cause adverse effects on human health because of the gene splicing, or genetic alterations that are done to create them through genetic engineering. Before this issue became an issue, many people were eating processed and even healthy foods without understanding what chemicals and toxins they were actually putting into their bodies. GMOs are infused into food without awareness because one never really understands what all those unpronounceable words, label GMOs, really are. Due to recent research, it has been found that genetically modified organisms are harmful and can lead to increased risks of disease and cancer.
Do you like to keep your life at risk every time you eat a meal or snack? Citizens are becoming at risk of health issues because of genetically modified food. Genetically modified items are food that is made with the dna of other organism’s. By eating the GMO food people’s lives are at risk.
We all as Americans eat food every day to maintain our homeostasis balance of nutrition. We eat our veggies, meats, dairy, and so forth. We buy our produces from local markets and grocery stores all around the country, but do we really know what kind of products we are purchasing? Where our foods come from and how they are grown? There are many products around us and amongst these foods are some that have been genetically modified. Genetically modified foods (GMOS) are also known as bio-engineered. They are usually available to the public for consumption. Whether that organism is an animal, a plant, or a microorganism. Most of the time, GMOs are recognizable as being plants, which is the one of the biggest concern,
“More than half of U.S. consumers express concern about genetically modified organisms, but many have no idea what that means” (Goldman 115). In modern days, we find ourselves living in a “plastic society”. Everything that we see is not really what we see, it is being camouflaged. This applies greatly to social media, but people don't see it very much in food. Now more than ever, the food industry is using genetically modified seeds and chemicals. This is an unethical practice because people don't know what they are consuming, and if what they consume has negative effects on them, they should be informed.
First off In today's world genetically modified food also known as (GMO) which is genetically modfied organism. It is generally the most important issue from everywhere around the globe, they are special organisms in that which the food has been altered for improvement in what could be taste ,health wise as nutrition or just to make the food taste and look better. Over the years there has been some concern about the food. Such as can you get diseases from the food, does it cause any health issues? Is this supposed to help us be more healthy isnt it supposed to help stop diseases. To some people they could think that modifying the food is a big secret but it really isnt. It is in everything we eat from breakfast to lunch and dinner even to a little snack you have in the middle of the day , there is no way from running from it.
In the United States today we consume genetically modified organisms in nearly everything we eat, and some of us are not even aware of it. Even though GMO’s have been around for nearly two decades, only recently they have been getting increasingly more attention. The author of The Threats From Genetically Modified Foods explains that “genetic modification refers to the manipulation of DNA by humans to change the essential makeup of plants”(Mather). However, a large portion of the American population is concerned about whether or not they should be wary of these new advancements in produce, if they should allow their food to be produced the way it has been done for centuries, and if they even have a choice. These are the concerns that are
As stated in the Organic Consumers Association, 80 percent of the food consumed in America is processed, and 75 percent of the processed food contains Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs) (Carolanne). GMOs are living organisms that their genetics had been unnaturally modified through scientists and engineers. This is a serious issue which every consumer in America is facing today. The rate of obesity had doubled since 1982, and this is only the visible effects of Genetically Modified (GM) food in the human body. There are more inner problems that a person can encounter by eating GM food. However, it does not end there. GM food can also cause problems for the environment. GM crops are a threat to birds, herbicides, insects, and even to water. GM food can be harmful to the human body and to the environment. Therefore, the U.S. should limit its use, and find some solutions.
Food wasting, hunger, climate change, all of these contribute to the need to understand the preposterous point of throwing away food when we believe it is not needed, when there is so many ways “extra” food can help other cities and even countries with their hunger issue. We have reached to believe it is simply not our problem most of the time and just pushing the subject under the rug, if we do not address the topic of world hunger more seriously, I feel as though we are contributing to the death count and the abomination that food wasting causes on our planet and to our fellow people. That is what Food foolish by John M. Mandyck and Eric B. Schultz is trying to make any reader understand. Answer me this, you do not say no to your child
