Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), have turned into an exceptionally questionable theme here in our reality today. GMO’s are genetically modified organisms that are created and added in a lab experiment where DNA are extracted from one gene and added to another plant or animal. This allows the genes to mix with the DNA to create a desired product. For example, bigger apples, larger oranges, taller animals, and plants that can survive the changing climate. The big controversy with genetically modified foods is the unknown. GMOs made their way on the market in 1994, since then there have been speculations with its long-term health effects on humans, and the environment. There has been a split between the consumers, corporations, scientist, and the government because consumers believe they are being lied to. According to the article, “Scientific Controversies as Proxy Politics” by Daniel J. Hicks he states, “88% of scientists said that genetically modified foods are safe to eat, but only 37% of the public agreed” (67).

A genetically modified organism is a plant, animal, or any other organism whose genetic composition has been modified by recombining extracted genes from the DNA of one species and placed into the genes of an unrelated organism. According to many scientists there is little research and investigations done to support the idea that GMO’s are safe to eat but do pose a threat to the crops. Genetically engineered foods are still new and are advancing, this may show different results in health effects of GMO’s in the future. I disagree with GMO’s in foods for many reasons including that they could have unexpected and harmful changes, could cause the original organism could go extinct, and could cause allergic reactions. One reason GMO’s shouldn’t be used in foods, is that they could cause allergic reactions. In “Genetically Engineered Foods,” it says, “Some people have raised concerns that genes from one food that are inserted into another food may cause an allergic reaction.” If someone is allergic to peanuts, and they eat a tomato with peanut genes, they could have an allergic reactions.
