The U.S. fleet spotted the enemy ships first, but the report did not make it to Admiral Kinkaid until later. Around 0655 both fleets had positive sighting and the Japanese where the first to get their strike force up and moving. The U.S. fleet followed. The Chikuma cruiser was hit on a second wave with two 1,000 lb bombs and took heavy damage. Causing the cruiser to move out of the battle. Pearl Harbor is a very important event in history because it affected the whole world by bringing the United States into WWII, and also changed the way the United States viewed their enemies. On December 7, 1941 one of the worst attacks ever on the United States occurred. More than 3,000 people lost their lives or were injured that morning, and the attack propelled us into war against the Axis Powers. Through the terrible misjudgement of numerous U.S. military personnel, the Japanese were able to carry out this terrible attack, which crippled the United States ' Pacific Fleet in the Naval base Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
December 7, 1941, was on of the worst attacks ever on the United States. Out of that day, 2,403 soldiers were killed in action, 1,178 were wounded in action. Through the misjudgments of numerous U.S. armed forces personnel, the Japanese were able to carry out this terrible attack, which crippled the United States’ Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
It all started the morning of December 7, 1941 when Japanese leaders decided to bomb the United States. Families were then broke apart and things became much more complex in the lives of Americans. Pearl Harbor was not “just a bombing,” but in reality it is so much more. This bombing had a great impact on the whole world for World War II. The bombing of Pearl Harbor had many situations before the bombing, during the bombing, and after the bombing.
“A date which will live in infamy (Roosevelt).” There were three part to this attack, what lead to the attack, the actual attack and the aftermath. The world was at war and the United States didn’t want to get too involved until the attack happened. During the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States made the decision to join the War. The United States joining the war brought the most crucial years to follow along with the dropping of the atomic bomb. The attack on Pearl Harbor was the beginning of the a very long war that cost the lives of many people but brought a nation together.
Dec. 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor: During WWII, the Japanese bombed an American military base located in Hawaii because they wanted to increase their power in the Pacific. The bombing of Pearl Harbor left more than 2000 men dead and injured more than 1000. The attack also causes Congress to declare war on Japan the following day meaning the United States was officially involved in WWII. The attack on Pearl Harbor is important because it was the main factor that lead the United States to get involved in World War II.
The attack on Pearl Harbor was a tragic event which occurred on December 7, 1941. As some call it, this was the awakening of the sleeping giant. World War 2 had already started and the US had attempted to stay neutral but as Japan dropped bombs over the island of Oahu on the US naval base the US was sent straight into war. Japan was upset and angry and the US for the things they have been doing lately so they finally got tired of it and they dropped bombs on Pearl Harbor.
December 7th, 1941, was the day 2,403 Americans lost their lives and 1,200 wounded during the Japanese air raid, on Pearl Harbor. On this day, the US Navy lost almost the entire Pacific Fleet in the harbor. After the attack, all the ships were either sunk or severally damaged minus the aircraft carriers. The aircraft carriers luckily were still at sea. The total number of military personnel killed was 2,335, including 2,008 navy personnel, 109 marines, and 218 army. Added to this were 68 civilians, making the total 2403 people dead. 1,177 men alone were from the USS Arizona.
Four US fighters took off but were promptly shot down. By 8:00 there were no more enemy planes in the air, and the Japaneses fighters strafed the airfields. When it was time for the level-bombing group to attack the battleships moored to the cast of Ford Island, the US antiaircraft began to fire at Japan causing dark clouds to form (most of them came from ships’ batteries). A cloud came between the bombsight and the target and caused the lead plane to miss the shot. Source L states that there was a dark red smoke that rose to 1000 meters that showed to explosion of the Battelship Arizona, over 1000 men got trapped inside as the ship sank. Commander Fuchida observed the damage and the second wave attack to see the ‘success.’ By the time the attack was over Pearl Harbour and its air bases were wrecked badly by the fierce strafing and
On December 7, 1941 the ultimate disaster in the history of the United States occurred. “Pearl Harbor is a lagoon island on the island of Hawaii” . The deep-water Naval Base for the United States Pacific Fleet was docked and filled with United States servicemen.
Casualties of American servicemen reached 2,403 killed, and another 1,178 wounded. Beyond human loss America lost four battleships and three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship and one minelayer. During the attack an imperial Japanese Navy air pilot crash landed after facing off with American fighters that happened to make it into the air, on the nearby island of Niihau. Several natives of Hawaii and of Japanese descent helped him take guard against other locals. Later, the imperial Japanese pilot was killed, those who helped were wounded and one individual took their own life. After these two acts of violence, the American people and the United States government felt vulnerable to the Japanese. (Hallstead W.
The damages to the American military vessels were more severe: “four battleships sunk, three battleships damaged, one battleship grounded, two other ships sank, three cruisers damaged, three destroyers damaged, three other ships damaged, 188 aircraft destroyed, 159 aircraft damaged, 2,402 men killed and 1,247 were wounded”(Attack on Pearl Harbor) . Most of those who died are forever entombed on the ships. However, 1,177 men died on board the USS Arizona and only 299 bodies were recovered; the rest are forever entombed on this battleship. The battleship still lies where it sank
Also, the Japanese rained bullets on the vessels (history.com). Then, after the bombing “torpedoes pierced the shell of the battleship USS Oklahoma with 400 sailors aboard” (history.com). Next, the ship “rolled onto her side and slipped underwater” (history.com). Also, there were multiple torpedoes that hit different ships, the Japanese didn’t just target one specific ship (history.com). After the attack was over “2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and another 1,000 people were wounded” (history.com). Once the attack on Pearl Harbor was over they were people who survived the attack (washingtonpost.com). For example, one of those people who survived is a man named Sen. Jackson B. Davis (washingtonpost.com). In addition,he is “one of at least two dozen Pearl Harbor survivors living in Shreveport-Bossier City” On December 7, 2014 “that number has dropped to three” (washingtonpost.com). Not to mention, there has been thought that “60,000 or so survivors are left”,but no one knows if that is for sure (washingtonpost.com). According to(washingtonpost.com), “2,000 to 2,500 survivors were thought to be still alive, according to Eileen Martinez, chief of interpretation for the USS Arizona Memorial”. Also, there are still “four of the nine remaining members of the USS Arizona Reunion Association.” still alive
“A day that will live in infamy” or more widely known as Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7th, 1941. The Japanese had attacked the American military base at Pearl Harbor, which is near Oahu. “The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded.” This caused the US to enter WWII, as well as caused a fear on the West coast of the US because of the dense population of Japanese Americans that are found there. The status regarding Japanese-Americans was changed rapidly after this event and they were thought to want to cause harm to the US because we declared war against the axis powers, which included Japan for revenge for Pearl Harbor.
