It is no surprise that recently there has been controversy on the issue of police force. So many people have been taken from their families over something that could have been prevented without taking it as far as killing. From Michael Brown to Walter Scott it just doesn’t stop. Thankfully, for some of these incidents a witness has caught Officers using excessive force. But others, you just get to hear the Officers side of the story since the other person isn’t alive to tell their side to what happened. Which is definitely not enough. There needs to be a legitimate system where we can see everything that happens start to finish when excessive force is the case. Organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) are demanding for …show more content…
Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) launched American Healing in 2010 which is to put inequality behind us and to raise awareness towards racism (W.K. Kellogg Foundation). At the 2015 American Healing Conference, experts proposed solutions to improve law enforcement. More than 500 leaders gathered to discuss how we can strive towards equality (PR Newswire 2015). It is amazing to see how many people come together and all want to put an end to the same thing: excessive force. There needs to be a stop to the madness that has been going on the past couple of years. We are supposed to be improving as one, but it just seems the system keeps on failing us making things worse each and every day. Sherrilyn Ifill who is a part of the NAACP, suggested at the conference that about $1 billion in annual grants should be focused on training for Officers (PR Newswire 2015). Officers most definitely lack training. They will go out there with these deadly weapons then shoot at someone as if it won’t cause any harm. Training is a big part of being an Officer. You can’t just hand law enforcement a deadly weapon and expect them to use it right. Most of them panic because they weren’t trained properly on how and when to use their deadly weapons. Ifill also suggested for comprehensive data collections because we hardly have any dependable statistics as of right now (PR Newswire 2015). We have no idea how many cases of excessive force there has been because not all are recorded or put out for the …show more content…
But what happens when they don’t turn the body camera on? There has been cases where an Officer was wearing a body camera but didn’t think to turn it on. Which is common sense because that takes away from the whole purpose and just wasting money. The only problem with body cameras is Officers are in charge of when they are turned on and when they are turned off. They control the record button. Officers need to be faced with the consequences when they don’t use their body camera when they are supposed to. There has already been too many cases where no one knows what happens so the Officer will always win. Just like in the Michael Brown case, where Officer Wilson killed Brown and witnesses were all saying different things as to if Brown was fighting back or if he surrendered. If a body camera would have been worn, then Officer Wilson would have been indicted and justice would have been served. Many incidents like this cause riots and distrust between the public and Officers. The department had the cameras when the killing of Michael Brown happened, but just hadn’t put them into action and start using them yet (Balko 2014). Which is really stupid on their part because if a department has these resources to make things better and to not cause problems for the city then need to be put to good use. This can lead to higher tensions between the
Excessive force being used by officers has been an ongoing issue since law enforcement was created. During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, it has been made aware that minorities were a target for the law enforcement of that time. The 1967 murder cases of “Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner against the sheriffs of Neshoba and Lauderdale County” at that time was huge seeing as everyone involved in the case got off without any charges (Wynter). After years have gone by and the 41st anniversary of their deaths has happened, someone was convicted. All this time, no one would speak up against the police of these counties in fear of being brutally murdered just like the three men that was in their care. The injustice of it did not make sense
The United States of America has many horrible police officers. This has created a stereotype that all police officers are terrible. One of the main reasons police officers have been target lately is, because many innocent people are harassed by them daily. There are multiple ways to classify these police officers as horrible being, but police brutality, corruption, and how they handle violent protest are three of many classifications.
Although I should know by now, I cannot help but think that there has been an overwhelming amount of police brutality in recent years. Police brutality can be defined as, when a police officer uses more force than necessary. This issue has spread throughout the United States of America, and is putting the lives of our citizens in great danger. Police brutality is not only physical, but it can also be verbal attacks; and, in most cases, it is caused by false arrest and racial profiling due to police corruption. Police brutality has been and continues to be a major concern in society and it is used very loosely to any and all forms of police misconduct. Whereas, in reality, excessive force of police misconduct is what defines police brutality. The jobs of a police officer are too calmly resolve public disturbance and disputes. Police officers are supposed to protect citizens; instead they are hurting and using excessive force. It is not right and it is unjust for a police officer to hurt a citizen due to an assumption without any actual proof of criminal activity.
While combating police brutality everyday, what really does matter? Despite, the increased attention and actions to remedy police brutality, police brutality is still a prevalent issue in today’s American society. It has sent critics on both sides of the issue into their corners, as no one really seems to have the answer. Maybe, the reason why police brutality has been so troublesome to alter is because the people trying to alter it are only targeting only the symptoms instead of the infection itself or maybe even the cause or the disease. What if the efforts to destroy the leaves and the branches have only made the root stronger? Police brutality is the excess use of physical force from an officer to a citizen. If there is one thing for
Police use of deadly force in America has become a largely talked about issue and seen more and more every day. In 2012, 602 people were killing by police, 326 of the ones killed were white Caucasians, and 123 were black. The reason I point this out is because a lot of people try to make it a race issue. Which in some cases may be true, but believe that it is more than just race it’s about the police being corrupt all round. The police officers power needs to be limited and these killings need to be stopped.
There are instances people don’t cooperate because of the trust issues between them. Hopefully the cameras can reestablish the connection between police and citizens. Soon they may realize this task will much harder to complete. Some may say it a breach of privacy, “particularly in instances in which encounters with police occur in a private home.” (Police Body Cameras) This is one of the main concerns with body cameras, nobody wants to be film inside his/her own home. Also the cameras are expensive at a large scale. “Body cameras can cost in the range of $100 upward to $1,500...” (Ignasiak) It’s not rational idea to issue all officers with cameras the cost will be too
For every 1,000 people killed by a police officer, only 1 officer is convicted of crime. The majority of these deadly confrontations are aimed at people of color. Due to the high number of deaths, this may lead to a commonly asked question, what happened? Cops should be required to wear body cameras so that if anything happens while the officer is on duty, the event will be caught on camera.
For over a year now America has been divided in half when it comes to the support or
The police shootings over the years have raised troubling questions about when, if ever, police are justified in using deadly force against a suspect. Many of police shootings may just represent a difference form of violence. Others law-enforcement officers may be physically incapable of taking a suspect into custody. For example, Peck (2016) writes about a $500.000 judgment against the District of Columbia when a police officer who was not in suitable physical shape used his weapon in the course of the arrest. How do we decide when a police officer can not only use force but shoot at a suspect even shoot to kill? The protection of life should be the primary value and guiding principle of the Police Department. As such, all levels of staffs
The New York Police Department would be the first people to call if you are in any trouble or might be in danger. Every time you would think of the NYPD, the first thing that comes to mind is that when you are in danger or something illegal is happening, they would be the ones to help you and solve the situation. When you think of the NYPD and these things come to mind, it would be the surprise that anyone would get when they see that someone of the NYPD has committed a crime. NYPD Sergeant Alberto Randazzo was arrested on child porn charges and also found that he would tell women through skype to perform sexual acts on young children. There were videos found of the actions that had taken place and what was identified as the NYPD sergeant
In the recent killings of Freddie Gray and Michael Brown, police departments from around the United States have become prone to be labeled as racist and to use excessive amounts of force constantly. As a result, president Obama was able to get the federal government to pay $75 million for the purchase of 50,000 cameras for law enforcement officers (Investor 's Business, Daily).” Furthermore, the recent killings of citizens by police officers have caused the nation to question the police departments that protect us. In the case of Michael Brown, little evidence was collected and it was up to the testimony of the eyewitnesses and forensics to determine a verdict. However. in the case of Freddie Gray, it was up to the altopsy of Gray’s body to decide if the officers killed him or not. Both of these cases seem to lack evidence and that causes the trial to become that much harder. Therefore, if body cameras were used in every police department, then video evidence would be able to provide video evidence of the incidents and would provide video evidence of events that lead up to the incident. Therefore, police officers should be required to utilize body cameras when on patrol because this will lead to video evidence to show what happened in any situation and would hep improve the relation ship they have with the citizens.
Police reform has been an issue in today's society because more tragic events are occurring due to the discretion of law enforcement against civilians. According to Jaweed Kaleem of the Los Angeles Time, "Police showed up. They thought they saw a knife, and told the man to drop it..., hitting the man in the back and killing him. He was 20 years old, 5 feet 4, 123 pounds with tan skin, and turned out to be unarmed. But there were no viral videos No protests. No arrests." (Kaleem,2017). Many individuals in society are being victims of excessive use of force on unarmed individuals. It is time to for the
Deadly excessive force used by police that has led to death is not some new hot topic on some television show; it is an issue within the Black communities that has spread rampantly. Civilians don’t have the trust that they should in law enforcement due to their belief that a police officer may shoot and kill them during contact. Excessive force in the form of shooting continues to be a nationwide problem that has spiraled out of control having a domino effect across the entire country. Reform measures include transparency in reporting practices as there is a lack of necessary transparent data that provides consistent data proving the prevalence of police related killings in our society. This leaves room for commentators and legislators to
Unlawful or not, the video indicated precisely what happened. One cop chocking a man till He pass on, regardless of the fact that he was begging for his life, and five different cops helping the murder !
Everyone has an opinion of police officers; whether it’s positive, negative or indifferent. Regardless of the city, as soon as a person encounters an officer, that person will come away with a lasting impression, hopefully it’s a favorable one. Gone are the days of having extra time to meet people and engage in “community policing”. How often have you heard “I was pulled over by the nicest officer today and got 2 tickets that I totally deserved”, or “The police stopped and frisked me today because I matched the description of a suspect, but I understand they were just doing their jobs”? No, they were “harassed”, the tickets were “unfair”, or “those officers had nothing better to do”. Fewer still are people that truly understand the purpose, importance and the cause and effect of even “simple” traffic stops. (In the police academy instructors stress that there is no such thing as a “routine” traffic stop).
