Argumentative Essay On Police Force

Decent Essays

It is no surprise that recently there has been controversy on the issue of police force. So many people have been taken from their families over something that could have been prevented without taking it as far as killing. From Michael Brown to Walter Scott it just doesn’t stop. Thankfully, for some of these incidents a witness has caught Officers using excessive force. But others, you just get to hear the Officers side of the story since the other person isn’t alive to tell their side to what happened. Which is definitely not enough. There needs to be a legitimate system where we can see everything that happens start to finish when excessive force is the case. Organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) are demanding for …show more content…

Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) launched American Healing in 2010 which is to put inequality behind us and to raise awareness towards racism (W.K. Kellogg Foundation). At the 2015 American Healing Conference, experts proposed solutions to improve law enforcement. More than 500 leaders gathered to discuss how we can strive towards equality (PR Newswire 2015). It is amazing to see how many people come together and all want to put an end to the same thing: excessive force. There needs to be a stop to the madness that has been going on the past couple of years. We are supposed to be improving as one, but it just seems the system keeps on failing us making things worse each and every day. Sherrilyn Ifill who is a part of the NAACP, suggested at the conference that about $1 billion in annual grants should be focused on training for Officers (PR Newswire 2015). Officers most definitely lack training. They will go out there with these deadly weapons then shoot at someone as if it won’t cause any harm. Training is a big part of being an Officer. You can’t just hand law enforcement a deadly weapon and expect them to use it right. Most of them panic because they weren’t trained properly on how and when to use their deadly weapons. Ifill also suggested for comprehensive data collections because we hardly have any dependable statistics as of right now (PR Newswire 2015). We have no idea how many cases of excessive force there has been because not all are recorded or put out for the …show more content…

But what happens when they don’t turn the body camera on? There has been cases where an Officer was wearing a body camera but didn’t think to turn it on. Which is common sense because that takes away from the whole purpose and just wasting money. The only problem with body cameras is Officers are in charge of when they are turned on and when they are turned off. They control the record button. Officers need to be faced with the consequences when they don’t use their body camera when they are supposed to. There has already been too many cases where no one knows what happens so the Officer will always win. Just like in the Michael Brown case, where Officer Wilson killed Brown and witnesses were all saying different things as to if Brown was fighting back or if he surrendered. If a body camera would have been worn, then Officer Wilson would have been indicted and justice would have been served. Many incidents like this cause riots and distrust between the public and Officers. The department had the cameras when the killing of Michael Brown happened, but just hadn’t put them into action and start using them yet (Balko 2014). Which is really stupid on their part because if a department has these resources to make things better and to not cause problems for the city then need to be put to good use. This can lead to higher tensions between the
