Social media, refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Over the past ten years, social media has become one of the biggest modes of interaction between the public, organizations and businesses all over the world. The social media is taking over the lives of the new generation of people, 56% of American citizens have a profile on a social network site this is more than half the population and this is just part of the world. In this I will be stating some statistics about facebook and how it is affecting us, how social media is persuading our minds and how it’s really affecting us human beings. Facebook who doesn’t know what that word is, Facebook is currently the biggest social networking site in the world, with 1.2 billion users in 2012, with half of them logged in on any given day. Facebook is a social networking site that focuses around sharing photos, links and status updates; it is a regular way for business and people to communicate. Statistics show that a shocking 57% of people using social networking sites talk to more people online than in real life. People are spending more time at home on Facebook and Twitter, seeing what is going on around them rather than actually getting up and doing something productive with their day. A whopping 48% of 18-34 year olds check Facebook when they wake up, and 28% of these doing so before they have even got out of bed. As
Since the early 2000s we have changed the meaning of what it means to be social. We have exchanged letters for texts, and faces for pixels. We have in a way become more social and lonely a society could be and we are still progressing. In a less dramatic tone, social networking is a way to contact anyone around the world; from friends to strangers. But the big issue is, what is it doing to our youth and sociaty as a whole. As for our argument we seem to have a case of how good or bad these types of interactions are.
Out of the variety of news sources such as TV, radio, or newspapers, one of the popular sources in today’s world is social media. People are getting addicted to and can’t live without social media such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. They use social media as of where they can post their status but also where they can receive a lot of different news. While social media are spreading any kinds of news such as trend, celebrity or even politics, people easily get the information that is not true called “fake news.” The fake news raises the major problem in social media as the news source. Once people see the news, they tend to believe and share it. Liking can spread out fake news in a second. When people like the news, the activity
Over the decade our generation has become more and more into Social Media. We can post any picture, tweet about our daily lives and comment on everything. However, as you pose for a picture, or tweet about something that happened to you, do you ever think if it interferes with the First Amendment? Most people do not consider that, and sometimes what they posted can lead them into a lot of trouble because it could violate the first amendment. Many argue that first amendment grants us the freedom of speech; however, to what extent should our activity on social media be protected as free speech under the first amendment? The people’s activity on social media should be protected as free speech unless the activity is determined to be an actual threat towards someone because there are different interpretations, our comments reflect our opinions, and the right of free speech is the foundation of our country and forms what this country is about.
Nowadays, a lot of people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler and so on. Since the Internet has propagated rapidly, social media have progressed a lot. The generalization of the internet makes us to live conveniently and fast. People are almost using smart phones, i-phones or comfortable devices which can access to internet. These equipments make us to do social network easily. It helps contact friends, family, and other people even though they live far away. It could be, however, abused, if you don’t use properly. Especially, it is important that we understand and regulate the use of social media by young children.
There is a transformation happening today that is completely changing the way that we do things. The ways that we are communicating are shifting from face to face interactions to short, interactive messages. Technology seems to be making it easier to stay connected, but it is restricting our interactions with others and leading to isolation.
5000 hours of online observation, done by Southern California University, found that the digital world is creating new opportunities for young people to grapple with social norms, explore interests, develop technical skills, and work on new forms of self-expression that wasn’t possible before social media existed(Goldberg). This brings us to a crippling question that have people on either side of the argument, is social media truly beneficial for society? There are stats that can be found for either position to state their arguments, however, no one can ignore the actual facts that should lead people to realize that social media is beneficial to society.
Social media is, generally, any online platform that promotes communication between your friends. Social media often allows users to post pictures or words to express themselves and let his or her friends know what is going on in his or her life. Being a new and evolving thing, obviously us as humans are going to create controversy about this new technology’s effects on the brain and body- whether they be good or bad. Most people believe anything they hear about social media’s effects on attention span, or its effects on people’s own view of themselves; no one ever talks about the benefits of social media though. Social media is a mostly good thing, and here is why.
Social media could be leaving young people at a higher risk of maladaptive attitudes due to the promotion of unhealthy eating and exercising behavior on these platforms. There is an overwhelming body of research that finds that social media negatively affects young women’s idea of their body (Dignard, 2017; Kleemans, Daalmans, Carbaat, & Anschütz, 2016; Dittmar, 2009; Grabe, Ward, & Hyde, 2008). Accessibility and time spent on the internet is one thing that could be related to an internalization of the thin ideal, body surveillance, and drive for thinness in young girls (Tiggemann, & Slater, 2013). This is especially worrying when young women spend up 27 hours per week online, 14% of which is on social media platforms like Instagram (Ofcom, 2015).
In this age of social media, we are constantly worried about being popular. We are driven by “likes,” “comments,” and “followers.” Not caring what our peers thought, our middle school selves posted anything and everything. Now, as seniors and having had access to social media for an abundance of years, we are far more cautious about what we post but not in the way you might imagine. Instagram is a resourceful tool but, if used incorrectly, could impair your social status.
The growth of new technologies has developed and led to Internet founded applications known as "social media" that allows people to network and share information with one another. Examples of social media include blogs, chat rooms, Snapchat, YouTube Channels, Facebook, and Twitter. Of course, there are many more applications that allows you to communicate online, however, these are the most common. You can access these social media cites by using a computer and or a cellular device. Social media has been the most prevalent today being that almost everyone is connected to social media in some shape or form. According to an article, “Social media sites rank as the fourth most popular source to access emergency information” (Travis). They have been used by individuals and communities all over the world to communicate and socialize. People use social media to keep in touch with loved ones and to post what’s going on in their daily lives. Social media is not only used for pleaser or leisure time, social media gives people knowledge about what’s going on in the world around us. In times of an emergency or disaster, social media has been very beneficial because it issues warnings, receive victim request for assistance and can spread information and receive user feedback.
Our generation prides itself at the capability it has when interacting with classmates at a quick and easy rate through social media. It's almost as if they want to be inquisitive about other human beings' lives. Perhaps because their lives are so boring they need to fill it up with images of a person else's lifestyles. The food they ate, the places they went, what movie star is dating who, Kylie Jenner's “puberty sprout”, Kendrick Lamar's new album(which is wonderful). We envy what we see and examine on these social media platforms, but forget what's actual and pretend. Being a person who likes to read, having a computer or cell phone makes the experience distinct. While you examine from an ebook you have something tangible to hold and enjoy. When I have a laptop and/or telephone even as I read, I have a tendency to get distracted effortlessly. When I have a laptop or telephone near while I'm studying or writing, I have the option of happening Instagram, FB, ship texts, take a look at my favorite splendor guru, have a look at meals videos, and so on. As an entire, the experience of analyzing and writing becomes tarnished with the consistent dings of incoming messages because your pal appreciated your photo or your friend is texting you a few juicy gossip. I can be reading for a physics test the next day but I by no means end analyzing due to my favorite YouTube channel posts this exceptional meals films, So I watch it and store it on my playlist, so I can make it later
What is social media? If one was to ask an everyday teenager of this generation, they would probably say something to the effect of “It’s a digital platform that helps everyone stay connected no matter what they’re doing.” However, if one was to ask someone from the prior generation what social media is, they might say “It leads to the youth of America becoming more: anti-social, depressed, self-conscious, and more than likely destroys the chances of someone making a career for themselves later in life.” So which answer is correct? Well, surprisingly enough the prior generation is. Social media leaves a digital footprint that can’t be erased no matter what precautions are taken.
What is todays version of the cigarette? What is something that we think is fine today that ends up being the complete opposite in a few years? People have many theories, some could be right some could be wrong. I have one, it’s social media. Now social media isn’t going to harm you like a cigarette would but there are multiple problems social media can cause someone. You might value your worth based on how many followers or likes you have, you may be deceived when pursuing a relationship, it might affect your job eligibility, and it may play a role in your psychological health. Being that social media and the dawn of the tech age is so new there are many grey areas when it comes to how social media effects a person on a daily basis. I will explore how social media may be different than it seems and why people need to be educated on the possible negative consequences if it is used unwisely.
When people think of social media they probably think of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. All of these websites allow you to post, comment, and like things other people say. It’s a great concept and all of these types of social media are very popular. I have an account or two on all of these websites, but after a while started to notice something. It started going from nice posts and pictures of my friends to videos and pictures of people I didn’t know all with very negative comment sections. This made the whole experience of seeing what my friends were doing a stressful time. After that occurred four years ago I decided to seek out an alternative form of social media that would have a more positive feeling to it. I needed to prove to myself that not all social media was a bad place or just a waste of time.
As social media has been on the rise for the past 10 years, so has the concern about the effect on people. A college student name Alexandra Tendler wrote an article about how social media make us anti-social and how the world evolves their lives around social media. Though social media has now become one of the world’s biggest resources, it’s now affecting people on how they deal with things going on in the real world. This argument contains visual evidence and insights to support their claims and it also contains a flaw or two. It’s not that Alexandra misworded or miss the point of the arguments, but this is indeed an opinionated topic and it misses the reality of things and how people deal with it.
