Social media is everywhere and can be best explained as a worldwide connected culture, or a platform which lets the users share their thoughts or participate in social networking. This invention has brought people closer than ever before. With the help of this blessing we can send messages and see our friend’s online activity even if they are overseas. Social networking cites spread information faster than any other media but the question here is does social media really bring people closer? In this paper, with the help of sociological perspective, am going to try to answer two questions how social media influence our life? And if social media is making us less social or not? Social media has a major influence on the society. An average person’s daily life is surrounded by interactive social networking sites such as facebook, instagarm, twitter, snapchat and etc. These networking sites provide people with the opportunity to get innovative ideas or share their own ideas or to make new friends or to promote their business with the world etc. It also keeps us informed and updated about the world. Since the invent of social media it has significantly helped the economy to grow. Today’s generation is so much influenced by social media that it plays such a huge role in shaping their actions, belief and especially their values. Mass media first grew as an entertainment but slowly it took over as a dominator. According to “The Next Web” there are 3 billion internet users in the world. People want to be liked and get famous through social media. When a person gets like on a pic or something he shared, it triggers a release of dopamine in the brain, dopamine is a chemical which releases in the brain when a person gets happy or achieve a goal. And of course, if you would like something you would want to keep doing that. Ever since the invent of smart phones, it has become easier to access our friends through social media and maintain our friendship with them but is it true? The answer is no. People spend so much time maintaining virtual connections that they don’t have time to maintain real life relationships. We all are guilty of using our phone when we are home with our family on the dinner table or when we are out
Social media has become a major form of communication in this day and age. It is available to all age groups. “The opportunities for adolescents to form and maintain relationships on the Internet have multiplied in the past few years” (Valkenburg, Peter, & Schouten, 2006). Users can be found throughout the world that accesses social media to connect with friends and family. This use of technology has become a major source of communication. Social media has taken over the way we communicate with each other. I prefer to communicate with people on social media instead of sending SMS messages. Although there are many different social media sites we have access to, Facebook has become the go-to website for many social media users. My favorite social media platform is Facebook.
Further, the author depicts that it is very quick to find relationships in social media, but are mostly the uncultivated and unreal ones. Users do not realize that they do not give themselves enough time to know the people they call their “friends” online. As a result, they could not act genuinely because of the fear of not being able to share the same thoughts and interests. This shows that no understanding is involved especially if they are practically strangers who call each other “friends”. Lastly, he contends the sad idea that social media has changed the definition of real friendship as people choose to open up to strangers rather than to someone they are close
Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Instagram, and Flicker was invented to keep us in touch and keep us closer to our family and friends. But according to How Facebook ruins Friendships “we took our friendship online” (Bernstein). First we began communicating more by email than by phone and then switched to instant messaging or texting. By joining social Medias online
Nowadays, a lot of people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler and so on. Since the Internet has propagated rapidly, social media have progressed a lot. The generalization of the internet makes us to live conveniently and fast. People are almost using smart phones, i-phones or comfortable devices which can access to internet. These equipments make us to do social network easily. It helps contact friends, family, and other people even though they live far away. It could be, however, abused, if you don’t use properly. Especially, it is important that we understand and regulate the use of social media by young children.
As a child grows up, everything they are exposed to affects their personality and shapes them into their own person. The schools they attend, the television shows they watch, and the people they are around can influence their ideology of the world and their place in it. Some people view social media (YouTube, Instagram, Musical.ly, Snapchat, etc.) as a good way to distract their children and keep them entertained, but children should not be allowed to spend a majority of their time on social media accounts. Some parents may argue that they should not shield their children from reality, but it is important to reduce the amount of social media children are exposed to, in order to reduce the amount of biased information and prejudice they may have.
Social Media is an important communication tool via a series of Websites and Applications used by millions of people which facilitates the creation and the sharing of content and information, which allows people to develop contacts and relationships to connect with each other efficiently through modern technology such as computers and mobile phones to fulfil people’s social needs. The “Social,” in Social Media refers to interacting with other people through sharing and receiving information and the “Media,” refers to the instrument of communication e.g. phone. Social Media is important since it has connected millions of people and Social Media is one of the dominant ways we communicate with each other. As of 2017 over 2.8 billion people use Social Media worldwide. It is hard to remember communication prior to the emergence of social media.
The social media is one of the most common ways of communication and pretty much of knowing anything and everything around the world these days, and it is growing very rapidly. It changes and affects each person in a different way, or ways. Some may argue that social media has a bad influence on children and young adults, and that it negatively effects their brains, character, or personalities, while most people see that the social media has a more positive effect on them than a negative one. Moreover, social media has helped many people around the world to connect, or re-connect, with each other, easily. Social media is basically the new way of keeping in touch with everything and everyone, and of even strengthening bonds between each
In this age of social media, we are constantly worried about being popular. We are driven by “likes,” “comments,” and “followers.” Not caring what our peers thought, our middle school selves posted anything and everything. Now, as seniors and having had access to social media for an abundance of years, we are far more cautious about what we post but not in the way you might imagine. Instagram is a resourceful tool but, if used incorrectly, could impair your social status.
“People are willing to risk taking a life and ruining their own because they don’t want to be alone for a second.”
In the past few years, the use of social media has been on the rise. There is Facebook, myspace, twitter and Instagram as well of others. The social media use has brought so many changes in the communication and interaction patterns of people. Facebook, the biggest social media website, has over one billion users and the number is increasing trend as time goes by. There have been studies in the past that have attempted to discuss the impact that social media has on the society at large. Most of the studies had positive findings rotating around interaction, communication and impact on business among others (Pantic, 2014). Social media has made communication easier all over the world. It has made the globe be like a village market in terms of the operations of business activities. Besides, interaction has been made easier between people from different corners of the world. In contrast some reported negative effects such as time wastage and the destroying of the real relationships and interactions in the actual world.
The use of social media in this modern time poses negative influence on the youth. For this reason, the parent must exercise some level of restrictions by limiting the time children spend on the internet, and also filters the data content available to them. The tremendous growth of social media has caused the youth to share unnecessary information on the internet making them vulnerable to sex predators, kidnappers, child molesters, identity theft, bullies, and so on. In his Blog, Suren Ramasubbu the Co-founder and CEO of Mobicip.com observers that “According to a report by Common Sense Media, 75% of teenagers in America currently have profiles on social networking sites, of which 68% use Facebook as their main social networking tool” (Ramasubbu 2017). Ramasubbu went on to emphasize that while social media clearly plays an important role in social connection and technical skills, it risks cannot be unnoticed in the life of the youths. The difficulties with self-control and defenseless to peer pressure makes teenagers helpless with such problems as social depression, social needs, sleep deficiency, and cyberbullying which are deemed realistic threats.
Social media has affected and transitioned the world’s culture for better and for worse. People embrace new social media as a good thing like, communication and meeting new people, a source of entertainment, job opportunities, and many more. But for others, it can totally turn it around and make it into a bad thing for them. Social media is an outbreak on the internet which lets people communicate and for you to explore new boundaries just on your computers or cellphones. It changes the lives of people more and more everyday with new updates and an interesting way to find out information.
When one thinks of social media one of the first things that comes to mind is an application such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Tumblr and many other applications that allow one to share information on the internet. So taking that into consideration one can deduce that social media is any application or website that allows one to share information about them or about other things on the worldwide web in real-time. Before social media people wrote letters, sent telegrams or used Morse code. Writing letters and use of Morse code is being applied in some parts sending telegrams was phased out. Social media came with the advent of the modern technological age at the turn of the century. It is with the birth of computers, the internet, and the modern phone that social media took off. Of course with the coming of social media, many ripple effects were felt. Some of the effects were positive. Case in point, information is shared instantaneously and in real-time across the whole globe. The world has been transformed into one global village because of social media. As all things have yin and yang, social media came with a number of side effects; effects that shall be espoused in this paper.
