Good morning, everyone! Has any one of you ever used Uber? I assumed that you all have a positive experience about Uber as it is much cheaper than taxies. I believe that first of all, Uber offers a range of advantages for commuters; and then, the conventional mode of taxi ownership and operation is inefficient; and finally compensation can offered to taxi license owners. Therefore, my opinion is Uber should be legalised in Victoria. Firstly, Uber is beneficial for commuters. Uber has a lower cost on most rides, it is cheaper than a taxi around 9 times out of 10. For example, in Melbourne, Uber costs 40 cents per minute and 1.45 dollar per km, while the maximum taxi rate is 94 cents per minute and 2.19 per km. Are they facing “hardship”? The answer is taxi license owners can be compensated. When New South Wales legalised the operation of Uber, the government offered compensation to taxi owners. In 2015, the New South Wales Premier, Mike Baird, stated that the government has sold and regulated taxi license plates and so has a responsibility to offer some protection for investors who own these plates. The perpetual owners of taxi plates will receive a $20,000 payment and multiple plate owners will receive a maximum $40,000. The total industry fund is budgeted at $250 million which will be used to play licensees who are facing disruption. Therefore, we don't forget those taxi drivers who poured their savings into taxi licenses over the past decades and the government will ensure that they can get the equitable assistance. As you can see, Uber is an operation which offer lots of advantages to citizens. Uber’s efficient service is fully able to be a legalised business in Victoria.
