Sareh Ghadersohi Safety. That is the main priority of most. Weapons. They are dangerous. Some may say that the main use of weapons is to protect an individual’s safety. However, according to Time magazine, “Dr. Arthur Kellermann, a University of Tennessee professor of medicine, and Dr. Donald Reay, chief medical examiner of King County in Washington, concluded that for each defensive, justifiable homicide there were 43 murders, suicides or accidental deaths. Out of 398 gunshot fatalities in homes in King County between 1978 and 1983, only nine were motivated by self-defense”(Magnuson). These statistics show that the risks outweigh the benefits. We need to illegalize the ownership of assault weapons, and allow only one small handgun to be owned in each household for the purpose of self-defense. Many people focus on the part where it says citizens have the right to “bear arms.” However, the Second Amendment was written during a time where states fought one another, so people had to form militias for protection. It is safe to say that the purpose of the Second Amendment was for protection. The Second Amendment did not grant the right to mentally ill individuals or people who want to cause terror and violence to obtain guns with no background check. Nearly everyone has heard numerous stories in the media about these types of people more often than they should. When a man enters an elementary school and kills innocent children with numerous assault weapons, something needs to be done. We can not leave things the way they are. Guns are being held in the wrong hands and not just for the purpose of protection. They are decreasing our safety instead of increasing
