Arguments Against Animal Testing

Animals, whether cats in the house or lions on the savannah, reserve the right to life. The disregard for animal life has been equated to racism or sexism; acting on principles of disrespect for life and thoughts of discrimination (Animal Testing and Ethics). The continuation of animal testing and experimentation take an enormous psychological toll on humanity, leading to rationalization and flawed justification. To carry on this path would darken the mark this animal abuse is currently leaving on our humanity, one step towards yet another fault in human nature.

As of 2015, 200 to 225 million animals are said to used in laboratory research for the biomedical industry annually worldwide. Typically defended by arguments of reliability and human health benefits, recently the question of ethics and values placed on animal testing have caused it to become a relevant and pressing topic that has been more widely discussed and debated. First off, the laboratory conditions that are instigated upon millions of animal models for the sake of medical research has been said to be unethical and cruel. Additionally, it has been debated that the results of animal experimentation are unreliable across a wide range of areas. Lastly, animal testing not only leads away from the direction of resources from more effective testing methods but also prolongs the duration of time humans may need to wait for an effective cure. Therefore, the potential benefits of animal experimentation are greatly outweighed by the risks and collective harm of humans and animals which is why resources should be directed towards more human-based testing procedures.

There is much debate over whether animal testing should be allowed or not. Some people think that it is not essential to sacrifice animals for human benefits because they are being abused and tortured severely during experiments. Some others who stand against animal testing claim that humans eliminate many lives on earth in order to safe humans’ lives, so there is no justice because even animals have the right to live on earth, yet these people do not consider the truth that animals are being used in the food industry or in the laboratories. Thus, if someone asks how many animals are being used in the laboratory experiments around the world every year, who can give an accurate answer? It can be one, ten, or fifty million. It is difficult to find the exact figure on this question because people only read news through mass media such as having a new vaccine which can help human avoid uterus cancer or a new medicine help humans cure strokes, but they also need to know how many lives of the animals would have to take in order to get theses vaccines. Therefore, some organizes think that animal testing is one of the most disturbing experiments ever, and it should be banned. Despite many controversies with opposing opinions, a compromise can be made in order to reduce the use of animals in the laboratory experiments.

Or have you ever seen a pregnant rabbit being tortured by the people you call scientists? One of the questions facing society today is whether or not animals should be used in scientific experimentation. Killing animals for any purpose is one of the steps that will destroy Mother Nature as well as the human race. For this reason, animal testing should not be used in scientific welfare and cosmetic industry.

Animal testing is first and for most pointless and a waste of time and money. After the passing of an animal trial, there must always be human trials as well. Since animal testing is unreliable, the real testing still solely relies on the human tests. This demonstrates that this method is unnecessary. Greek and Greek argue that “those who say we test on animals to avoid testing on people are wrong. Once animal studies are complete, all new medications are evaluated on humans. The first people to take a new substance are being experimented on as surely as if they were guinea pigs locked in a laboratory” (59). In addition to that, the 21st century has brought many new advances in technology and science and because we have these new advances, animal testing now is completely unnecessary. Bif Naked states, “It doesn't just make sense for animals, but for people, too, because state-of-the-art non-animal tests offer a far more reliable way to predict how consumers like you or me will react to a product in the real world.” While many of these method have not been explored fully, they are still extremely promising, less harmful, cheaper, and produce more accurate results. Rachel Rutter states, “Effective, affordable, and humane research methods include studies of human populations, volunteers, and patients, as well as sophisticated in vitro, genomic, and computer-modeling techniques.” None of these methods

When it comes to the topic of Animal Testing, most of us will readily agree that alternative methods do exist that can replace the need for animals. Where this agreement usually ends is on animals are different from humans and therefore make poor test subjects. I agree that there are other methods but I also disagree that the animal are poor test subjects because a drug might work on a cell in a test tube but how will it work on a human. We don’t know until we test a living creature.

These experiments are just a few of the unfair and cruel ways in which animals are being tested on today.

Using rats for toxicity, for example, must not be accepted as reliable since humans are nowhere close to being 70-kilogram

This is a review of multiple works regarding animal testing and its need today. This is 2014 and there are other alternatives for testing that doesn’t involve animals. The questions are, “What are the alternatives to testing that doesn’t use animals?” and “How accurate are the results for tests where animals were used as the subjects?” In general, the literature seems to indicate that animal testing is just not worthwhile and animals should not be used anymore.

Animal research has been used for several centuries as part of experiments conducted to assure the safe use of medicine, food, cosmetics, and among other products. It is an important issue because it concerns millions of life animals that are constantly in danger for unethical practices. Animal testing has brought many debates worldwide among countries that are against this practice. I believe that the use of animals for such purposes is cruel and unnecessary.
