Crime and victim of crimes are and everyday news headline in the United States. What is never far from these headlines is the high levels of these crimes were committed with a gun. The next ensuing headlines are the topic of gun control. Many will argue that there are too many guns in America. Advocates of gun control subscribe to their argument that guns are easily assessable that there is a correlation between the number of gun crimes and the availability of guns. Gun right advocates will point out that the high numbers of gun related crimes are due to the size of the population. A continued argument is the majority of crimes committed with a gun were obtained illegally. Gun control will not stop crimes committed with guns, it prevent …show more content…
“Social control is the control that a society exerts upon the individuals within it. The form that this control takes is embodied primarily in the socialization process and the resulting internalization of the norms and values of the society”. There applicable control besides the government imposing laws. Society takes this a step further influencing the government that there is a general consensus needs to change laws, forcing the government and legislation to impose new laws governing gun control. Laws the making society safer, such as no gun zones or restrictions on carry permits. Where the on the other end it just the general knowledge that everyone owns or potential own guns make society safer. This theory would be something similar to Switzerland where gun ownership is very common among the majority of the population. With evidence that Switzerland has a much lower crime rate in population terms to the United …show more content…
Gun Control advocates will argue that guns are large responsible for crimes committed in America. That the presence of guns in a household increases the chances of a person committing suicide, or being in spousal abuse or murder. They will argue that the increase of gun ownership will stop crime is a myth. Gun advocates argue and point toward Britain laws of gun control have increased crime. Britain collected and confiscated guns over 10 years and in fact it did not stop violent crimes because the only people who have them are the
What cause crime? Is is an individual’s access to firearms or is it their willingness to act illegally given the opportunity? In this argumentative essay I will be discussing one of the most debated topics in the United States today, gun control. There are two extremely opposite views on this topic: the belief that guns enable crime, and the belief that guns deter crime. These polar opposites leave room for a very good discussion of what facts and truths may lie behind this topic. Throughout this essay I will be analyzing both sides of this issue. The significance of a topic such as gun control is very prevalent in today’s society. Some see it sad that we must argue over one of our supposedly deemed unalienable rights such as bearing a firearm.
Gun violence is one of the most serious problems in the United States. Each year in the U.S., more than 35,000 people are killed by guns, a death rate much higher than that in any other industrial nations. In 1997, approximately 70 percent of the murders in the United States were committed with guns. However, ironically, the United States also is the country that has the most gun control laws. Gun control laws generally focus on passing legislation—by local state, or national government—to restrict legal ownership of certain firearms. Seemingly, gun control laws may decrease criminals’ access to guns, but in fact the same laws also have their negative effects. Thus, the controversy over gun control is always heated. But my paper is not
A majority of the American people feel that gun control laws will help reduce crime rates because the waiting period would allow time for a person’s temper to cool down. They also feel that gun control will prevent repeat offenders because when a person tries to purchase a handgun, he will have to fill out a lengthy questionnaire. The questionnaire will include questions about the buyer’s past, for example, if they have a criminal record or a record of any mental illness. If there is a criminal record in that person’s history, he will not be able to make the purchase. Restricting handgun ownership would also reduce crime, because guns are used most often in robberies and murders (Mayer 28). They are very easily concealed under a coat, or even in the waistband of pants.
The debate on gun control revolves around how the laws to be implemented will affect the acquisition of guns by the criminals as well as law-abiding citizens. Gun control proponents are of the opinion that in the absence of gun control laws, criminals will acquire guns too easily. In the same vein, if all citizens are armed, criminals will have a greater incentive to acquire guns. Hence, there will be too many guns in circulation and crime cases will increase. Contrastingly, gun
For this reason, it is incredibly hard for the country to agree or disagree on controversial topics such as gun control. Gun control laws and restrictions are methods in reducing the accessibility of firearms to the ordinary citizen. The belief is that with less dangerous firearms in the streets, the less crime there will be. Numerous studies and evidence show that a reduction of gun ownership can ironically increase the crime rate. This trend might seem counter intuitive but when seen at a different perspective, it becomes logical. When law abiding citizens are not able to purchase a weapon but a criminal is through illegal means such as the black market, it leaves people helpless against the gunman. Many advocates for gun control seem to ignore the facts and trends that show that gun ownership and crime rate does not have any correlation. Instead, these advocates seem to rely on the emotional appeal of people, exploiting the tragedies that are caused by shootings, wars, and criminal activities. The purpose of this essay is to educate people on the negative side effects of gun control and on how guns can actually decrease
Gun control laws should regulate production, distribution, ownership and use of firearms by civilians. Gun control laws are not intended to dispossess law abiding citizens of licensed firearms but to intervene on reckless use of firearms that cause harm to the public. Gun control should also make it difficult for criminals to access firearms. Armed civilians have in many instances deterred acts of crime from being instigated by scaring away criminals. Nonetheless, gun laws can only be described as immensely lax. This essay seeks to argue for the enactment of strict gun control laws by highlighting the dangers posed by guns in the hands of members of the public.
The issue over the interpretation of the Second Amendment still prevails as one of the most controversial issues in the United States. The Constitution states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The question at hand is the proper definition of a “well-regulated militia” and should there be restrictions on the obtainment of lethal weapons. Ever since the year of 1960, gun violence has increased, costing an average of 30,000 deaths in the United States (Gun Violence is a Serious Problem). This astronomical amount of unnecessary deaths will continue to rise if nothing is done to stop the serious epidemic that continues to plague our
Gun control has become a very hot topic of contention in America today. What seems to echo here are two words: “guns” and “crime”, in a sense that are these words mutually exclusive to each other? Does the use of guns ultimately lead to crime? On the flip side, have the laws in America restricting firearm use been effective enough to protect the lives of the citizens? These are some of the questions that strike the hearts of many when the gun control debate music is played. However, the debate about gun control is not new.
An un-armed population will have a difficult time protecting itself from criminals that clearly do not care about laws and would most likely be more successful in committing a crime if their intended victims are incapable of defending themselves. While there are numerous reasons, including social, economic and mental health, as to why criminals commit crimes, having access to guns is not one of them. The 2nd Amendment of the Constitution states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (U.S. Const. amend. II). Protecting the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution is vital because limiting or outright denying law-abiding citizens the ability to possess firearms, which are nothing more than a tool, will cause more problems, such as higher crime rates, than it would solve.
One early morning, April 16, 2007, on the Virginia Polytechnic Institute campus, thirty-two teachers and students were slaughtered by a student named Seung Hui Cho. This was only the beginning of many more of tragic shootings caused by the possession of firearms. On the twenty-sixth of February 2012, a 17 year old boy, by the name of Treyvon Benjamin Martin, was murdered by the hands of George Zimmerman. More recently a 21 year old male, Dylann Roof, opened fire on a church in Charleston, South Carolina. Nine catastrophic deaths occurred on the account of Roof. In recent discussions of gun control, a controversial issue has been whether to increase the availability of guns so that people can protect themselves, or to make them extremely hard to obtain. On the one hand, some argue that the control of guns is considered to be the infringing on
Nowadays streets are scary to walk alone at night. Crime rates have increased currently and people are nervous to leave their own homes at night. Sadly, unlike cartoons, there is no hero that is going to swoop in and save the day. Imagine you were sitting in your parked car next to dark streets, lit up only by a dim lamp-pole. You see a man walking slowly with his head down and he starts walking towards your car. He taps on the window. In this moment, wouldn’t you want to be able to protect yourself? You don’t know what this man is capable of or what his intent is. When you roll down your window to ask what he wants, he pulls out a gun. If you were weaponless, there would be a high possibility that you would not survive. Imagine this instead. As he pulls out his gun
There are many Americans who are opposed and many who are for the control of firearms. Robert Farago is an author and publisher of thetruthaboutguns.com, in his article, “Gun control is not the answer: Opposing view”, he states that gun control laws won’t stop criminals from committing mass shooting or other crimes. Farago gives an example of how president Obama created more gun control laws but he goes on to saying that with or without laws, criminals are still going to shoot or rob innocent people. He also gives reasons on how a law cannot prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. The main idea of this article is to persuade and inform American citizens that with or without gun control laws, crimes will keep occurring. Farago has a strong belief that gun control acts will not
A highly debatable topic and serious topic that has been going on for the past couple years or so is gun control. It’s such a wide spread grouping topic some think that we should have it, others say different. Some say we shouldn’t have guns at all. I’m here to tell you that we should have guns and very minimal gun control because, the Second Amendment states that it is our right, it is a key factor in self defence, and finally taking guns away won’t solve anything.
Imagine a world where you wake up with an armed robber in your house with a gun already nearby. Would you have a good feeling knowing you can protect yourself right? Now imagine a world where you wake up with an armed robber in your house and you have no weapon to use for self-defense. What would you feel then?
For many years, people have been pushing the American government to implement new laws that deal with gun control. Supporters of the argument claim that increased gun control will drastically reduce the crime rate in America. Nevertheless, a majority of gun control arguments are formed from strict control of data and emotional appeal. The mainstream media picks up these stories and broadcasts them to viewers without providing any context to them. While gun control activists assert that gun control is necessary, the American government should not ban guns because of the following reasons: potential vulnerability of innocent people being shot at by criminals and the inability for people to defend themselves against their own government.
