Social media touches on three very different yet intertwined forms: art, culture, and technology. Social Media shows art by allowing creativity on a broader spectrum, culture by being connected to each other to see cultural differences, and will also allow me to talk about the technology used to create social media. Social media has definitely evolved. According to Hale, “The first social media site that everyone can agree actually was social media was a website called Six Degrees. Six Degrees allowed users to create a profile and then friend other users” (2015). Also according to Hale, in 2001, there was a continuous invention of social improvement that started primarily with “crowdsourced encyclopedia, Wikipedia” (2015). After this development there was a burst in different social media sites that, most of which are still popular today. Hale give a great brief timeline of this in his article saying, “Wikipedia was followed by Friendster, Myspace, Facebook in 2004, and Twitter in 2006. While Facebook and Twitter are the two top social media platforms today” (2015). Social media is frequently looked at as the ultimate driver of communications. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 prompted a new interest in the world of the machine, yet the artistic approach to technology differed from the Futurist and Constructivist precedent. Technology did not hold utopian potential; rather the artists of the 1960s adopted varied approaches, ranging from sheer admiration to fearful pessimism. However, by the end of the 1960s technology became closely associated with the American war effort. The negativity that developed in response resulted in the technological work of artists such as Jean Tinguely and Robert Rauschenberg being pushed aside in favour of Conceptualism. Jean Tinguely’s Homage to New York (1960) and Robert Rauschenberg’s Soundings (1968) will be used to explore how these particular artists responded to the rising technology, and the extent to which artist and scientist collaborated.

While it was not possible to determine if using the site and increased academic self-efficacy users were seen attending more orientation programs and users were seen to help each other adjust to campus life(DeAndrea 18-19). Teachers are seeing different benefits from using social media. One benefit is more engagement from students, a theater class at the University of North Carolina used a video game to enter a social universe set in Shakespeare’s Globe theater. The class would act out plays in the virtual setting, the professor noticed more engagement and excitement from the more quiet and shy students(Blankenship 40). Not all teachers, and students, are receptive or willing to integrate social media into the classroom. One argument against implementation is that not all students have the ability to access the Internet when not on school grounds and requiring the school to provide technology outside of the classroom would be impractical or impossible to achieve(Blankenship 41). Another argument that is used is that social media is its impersonal nature “the best ideas often come from sharing an actual space with someone” (Blankenship 41). Educators are still researching social media’s place in education and the classroom is one of the best places to experiment.
