Art was one of my favorite classes, but I wasn't a fan of algebra class. There are many differences and similarities between art class and algebra class. I love taking a bit of nothing and turning it into a work of art that I can be proud of. One of the main reasons I disliked algebra class was how much homework we had. One of the biggest differences between these two classes was the amount of creative freedom used in art class. Algebra class has more lectures while art class has more hands-on creative time. There is more note-taking and homework involved in algebra. In art class, you could draw but that was pretty much frowned upon during algebra class. In art class there is more opportunity to walk around and talk to your friends. If you
Since Elementary school, I’ve been in love with math and all that it offers. I get excited with the numbers, the letters, and the equations. It fascinates me how there’s so much depth and that there is always something new with math. Not until I reached high school did I realize that the reason I loved math so much was because it was Algebra. My sophomore year I discovered Geometry, and that is when the loathing began.
In the contemplation of art, or rather the conceptually intangible definition it currently possess, it is imperative to be mindful that “art” has been utilized as a promotional device, ceremonial item, aesthetically purposed article or perhaps none of these or all. It is because of this vague term that Carolyn Dean, in her text, “The Trouble with (The Term) Art”, makes a case for the consequences of applying the term “art” in societies that lacked such a notion which also accounts for the Western-centric lens the field intrinsically utilizes when viewing non-Western art. The claim is deftly supported by the utilization of expert accounts in the subject, alternative perspectives for what is considered the current norm, and self-examining questions,
Fine art classes are fun and let students express themselves in different ways. A middle school student said, “I love fine arts. They give you a chance to be outwardly expressive and they are more fun and less stressful. They help me express myself through music.” Another student said, “The fine arts classes help me think creatively and are one of my favorite parts about
but I still didn’t consider it one of my favorite subjects or even realize how interested in the courses that I was. When I got into high school I began to see that I really enjoyed my mathematics courses. The material interested me and I enjoyed the solving
Art and I did not agree during elementary school, and I often refused to participate in the periods in the day devoted to coloring. Fourth grade came and there were no art requirements in my sad school in North Carolina, so instead of art, I was actually able to choose more physical activities and put art out of my life right up until sixth grade. I signed up to participate in Orchestra because for some reason my sixth grade mind thought the banjo would be an
On today I observed Mrs. Dillon’s 6th period art class. The room was filled with students’ artwork, both from the past semesters and the current semester. Among the artwork were mosaics, murals, cement masks, and art guides — color wheel. It was a combination of 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, both male and female. There were 23 students present and they sat in groups around tables consisting of two boys and two girls and one table filled with all boys. The teacher was absent on today, but the students behaved just as if she were there. When they entered the classroom, the grabbed their journals and headed to their assigned seats. Usually there would be a journal displayed on the board, but since the teacher was absent, today there wasn’t. Their
I think that I have an excellent balance of academic and artistic skills. Since 7th grade, I have taken an art class. This class creates a soothing break from my academic classes that improves my inventiveness. I try to express my creative side through my art work. Through several art projects, I get to expand and explore my artistic ability. Art, to me, is a form of communication. It communicates my thoughts and imagination in ways school, grades, and scores cannot. It is a complex matter and is not easy to fully clarify. Furthermore, outside of art class, I use my creativity for art projects in other classes. I try to incorporate it into a majority of my classes. Additionally, I have an interest in art that is demonstrated through extracurricular
What I appreciated the most from school wasn’t the classes we were expected to take, but rather the ones I could choose and explore myself. Being able to take art classes in particular was extremely fulfilling. Ever since I was old enough to hold a writing utensil in my hands, I have been engulfed in the world or creating. To be able to create your own world through the interpretations of this one has always been very profound to me. I believe Henry David Thoreau strongly in his words, “This world is but a canvas to our imagination.” However, I never had a structured way to learn
When thinking about my experiences with math, I compare them to a rollercoaster. There are some days where I love math and there are some days where math and I just don't get along. My past experience stems from poor teachings but, also great teachings. I can remember back to elementary school and absolutely loving math, but when it came to high school, I didn't find I suited it. I think this may be because I didn't have teachers who made me interested in math. Even though I came from really enjoying math, high school teachers turned me away from it. Recently, I found myself working in the Simcoe school board teaching STEAM to grades 3-9 and absolutely loved everything about it. I think I enjoyed it so much because it was so different from
These classes have taught me to know how much of a product I can buy with a certain amount of money (Harris). Basics in algebra can help calculate sales, proportions, ratios, and percentages (Harris). Algebra can be used in cooking, calculating loans, or mortgage payments (Harris). Math helps us think logically and learn how to solve problems in different ways. It helps our brain grow and we become smarter from it. We learn how to organize information because of it. I’m sure the knowledge I have been accruing will become useful in the future with Pre-Calculus and Calculus as you kindly remind us in class. We need to have a good solid foundation in math in order to learn more because it is all connected. I hope to get a degree in Computer Information Systems and I am sure I will use some forms of math in my job. I may do web designing, or programming, or have to charge a client for a job my company does for them. All of these things will require me to use my math skills. As I have mentioned, algebra is already used in my day to day life when I go to a store, set up my budget, look at how to pay my mortgage, or paying a car loan. I even use it while helping my son who is in the 5th grade with his
In this course I learned about Western art from the start of the Renaissance to the mid 19th Century. I was able to see the influence of the religious, cultural, political, and social landscape that shaped the evolution of art. This includes: Renaissance, Illusionism, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, and Realism in relation to painting, sculptures and architecture.
In college, I took an art class as a requirement — I didn’t particularly love the
Surprisingly, I excel in art. I used to dislike art in elementary and middle school because
Being able to learn more and more education and math being one of the main subjects can get you to a mindset where it doesn’t matter what you can choose from but to be able to pick something you want to spend your life doing. You don’t even have to do it for the rest of your life, but you can try it out for a while and if you don’t like it, you can move on to the next option or choice you have. Those are the things people that have a job that isn’t the first thing they thought about when they heard the word job, wish they could say. Not only does studying algebra make you learn math, but also has a benefit of developing logical thinking and problem solving skills. Algebra can increase your intelligence.
Ever since I was born, I am surrounded by art. Pursuing art is like my family tradition, I am the fourth generation in my family who decided to use visual arts to share our perspectives to the rest of the world. I am not the kind of people who are good at starting verbally communication. For me, art is the way that I communicate with others. Communicating through art, I was able to let people see the way that I see the world.
