Athletes Should Not Be Paid

College athletes are fun and exciting to watch each and every time we watch them. The only problem with college athletes are that they are not getting paid like they should be. Athletes give it their all each and every time they go out on the court or the field. The NCAA makes billions of dollars each and every year from championship games or the NCAA March Madness, but none of that money is sent to the players. College athletes have the right to be paid by the NCAA and the universities because they represent the product that both are selling.

The proposal of payment toNCAA student-athletes has begun major conversations and arguments nationwide with people expressing their take on it. “This tension has been going on for years. It has gotten greater now because the magnitude of dollars has gotten really large” (NCAA). I am a student athlete at Nicholls State University and at first thought, I thought it would be a good idea to be able to be paid as a student-athlete.After much research however; I have come to many conclusions why the payment of athletes should not take place at the collegiate level.The payment of athletes is only for athletes at the professional level. They all are important to their team’s success and considered leaders on their teams. The major difference between the four players is that 3 of them are compensated for their work, but on the other hand, one which is a college student receiving a free education, isn’t paid for nearly doing the same kind of work. Many people would argue that it’s not fair that college athletes aren’t being paid for bringing in millions of dollars to the institution they play for, putting their lives in danger to play the sports, and missing tons of class to prepare for their sports games without being paid. Those who argue against the compensation of athletes would say that most college and universities don’t make nearly enough revenue to pay all the college athletes as well as saying college athletes already receive a free education with scholarships and that should be the real reason to be in college. This issue has been a debate for many years among players, the National Collegiate Athletic Association & even outside influences like celebrities and law officials.

No one expects somebody to work two fulltime jobs and not get paid for it. Nobody would think it would be fair to work so hard and not receive any form of compensation. This is exactly what is happening to student athletes. Student athletes are not only fulltime students, but also are fulltime athletes. There are two very decisive sides to this argument. On one side the NCAA claims that the student athletes are amateurs and cannot be paid. They also claim they are paid in other ways such as a full ride scholarship to a top level education. The other side of the argument states that the work load of a fulltime student and a fulltime athlete is almost unmanageable and the NCAA is making millions off of their work and sweat. Student athletes in college are held to a higher standard than normal students since they are juggling a lot more in their lives. Student athletes have to set aside a lot of time for practice while still maintaining good grades and a social life. Some people believe that because of this demanding schedule that student athletes should be paid. College athletes receive many benefits while playing for the school of their choice. The endorsements for playing a division 1 college sport is obscene. The college athletes receive many compensations for playing a college sport including free tuition, textbooks, housing, and meal plans. Therefore college athletes should not be paid a salary for playing a sport.

College athletes should not in any way or fashion be paid or get any incentives whatsoever by the coaches or the universities for their play on the field or on the court. The players already have a humongous advantage in the classroom by getting extra help and attention by the professors, having an advantage in the work field by having high paid jobs lined up for them when they aren’t playing or practicing, and also getting to experience all the different cities they get to travel to and all the media and TV exposure and memories that last forever. College athletes should not be paid because the students should worry about their education, it is an extracurricular activity, and the Ncaa does not approve of it.

College sports specifically basketball and football are the most electrifying sports in America. When it comes to March Madness or bowl games america goes nuts it’s as if a preview of the super bowl or NBA championship begun. Head coaches are well paid at the college level where students are given the burden of meeting academic standards and elevate their “game”.

This definition is focused around education and the higher learning that individuals receive when they attend a college institution. It is not centered around, nor does it mention athletics. College athletes should not be paid a salary for their participation in college sports, the purpose of college is education and not athletics.

Student athletes that play football or any sports in college should not get paid. Colleges use almost all their money that they have for athletes on your scholarship and on the uniforms and any other needs the team has. Paying the athletes that play sports means you would have to pay all the other players that play sports as well. The money would also vary between players because of the sport they play and because of their skill and talent. Money would also vary on the dominance of the sports that is at your school which means if your University is big on football then football players would get paid more than any other sport or if your school is big on basketball then the basketball players would get paid more than any other player or sport attending the School.

In America, most college students graduate facing a lot of built up debt. However, most student athletes are not included in this since they receive scholarships that help them afford the costs of their education, living arrangement, and food. Some people believe that student-athletes should be paid since they have to divide their time in sports and school while others do not share the same belief since it is the students’ choice. Student athletes should not get paid for playing on their universities’ team since they are already getting paid throughout their college years with scholarships, they should be focused on their academics, and paying the players would damage the integrity of the game.
