In high school I have learned the true meaning of being selfless and what the gift of giving is. I have spent much of my high school career volunteering at school and in the community. Many students spend their years of high school partying and hanging out with their friends, but I have dedicated myself to staying after school every day to volunteer and help the Athletic Trainer at the High School, as well as being a part of our schools community service group, Youth Core, as an officer.
The profession that I am interested in is an Athletic Trainer. I have chosen this career because it is something that I have recently become passionate about within the last two years. I have never been the kind of person to struggle with weight, however after having my 3rd and last child, weight has become an issue. I mention my personal struggle to give insight on why I have chosen an Athletic Trainer. This profession’s main goal is physical fitness. As a trainer you become responsible for another person’s physical active lifestyle. Assisting clients from injury to recovery, evaluating their bodies and advising the individual what is best. Athletic Trainers has many responsibilities. AT’s are professionals in the health care world who mainly caters to athletes. An AT however isn’t limited to just athletes. Terrell did retire to a really nice retirement community. His decision to retire from his work as an Athletic Trainer was largely based on his deteriorating health. His job had high physical demands, whether it was carrying injured athletes off the field and always carrying heavy medical kits. Especially with his arthiritis worsening, even performing simple tasks has become very difficult. He was also facing some pressure to retire and he believed it was due to ageism, discrimination based on age (pg. 412). His employers had less confidence in his competence and ability to carry out his job considering he was very old. Eventhough, as people age their muscle fibers shrink thereby decreasing strength, he exercised daily and was on healthy diet, which would slow down the decline (pg. 415). He was very proactive in maintaining his shape and strength which was a requirement of his job, but his health problems were dampening his efforts. Furthermore, he wanted to spend more time with his son and grandchildren, who were just entering adolescence. And after, his wife's death, he has been unable to cope with the loneliness and was seeking to connect with people who had similar experiences as he had and believe he could find them in the retirement community. He felt he needed to have sense of belonging in a community, where he would be able to
