A little bit more of it
Attention is defined as “the action of dealing with or taking special care of someone or something.” (Unknown). I define attention as the action of carefully observing, analyzing and interpreting a given act by someone or something. Attention is something that all children need especially from their parents. Parents need to give attention to their children to know what is going on with them, in order not to lose sight of who they are becoming.
If parents do not give enough attention to their children, the children find a way to get that attention. Young boys usually crave for attention. They want the world to turn around them. They are ready to do anything to have people’s attention. Take a look at Laurie from the short story “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, he

Parents are usually good at knowing their children. They usually know their children’s favorite color. They know whether their kid is a trouble maker. This is the opposite of Laurie’s parents, they don’t even know their child’s favorite color “because she tried to make him color with red crayons,’ Laurie said. ‘Charles wanted to color with green crayons so he hit the teacher and she spanked him and said nobody play with Charles but everybody did.” (Jackson). It shows that he doesn’t want to color with red because he likes green. If they knew that Laurie liked green, they would have suspected that Charles is Laurie. Parents usually know when they children are trouble makers. Laurie’s parents think he is a small good boy while he is a trouble maker “Laurie usually adjusts very quickly,’ I said. ‘I suppose this time it’s Charles’ influence.’ ‘Charles?’ ‘Yes,’ I said, laughing, ‘you must have your hands full in that kindergarten, with Charles.’ ‘Charles?’ she said. ‘We don’t have any Charles in the kindergarten.’ (Jackson). This show how Laurie’s parents have poor parental
For example, Lorraine's mother always tells her “you’re not a pretty girl Lorraine.”, she also always calls Lorraine fat and ugly. Lorraine’s mother does not set a good example for Lorraine because she bullies her. Another example is John’s father likes to lie which rubbed off on John, one time John’s father went around bragging how he phonied up a car insurance claim to get a hundred dollars to replace a piece of aluminum on their new car, which he had really replaced himself. John’s father taught John that lying was not bad without even knowing. John’s family also had other issues because John’s father was an alcoholic and did not care if John drank beer. John was not old enough to drink beer but his father did not care because he was an alcoholic. Both families show that they have bad family values because they are mean and
Children will always need guidance in what good behaviour is and it is the adult/carer role to teach them. Working with children who have behavioural issues as a result of neglect and abuse I often see children acting in negative ways as a way of seeking attention. This is a result of their lived experiences and they need to be taught how to seek attention in a more positive way that allows for less chaos and full of growth. Behaviour of such kind is also an indicator something is not right and they lack the right communication skills or are not being heard. It is important that we try to identify patterns of behaviour or triggers because:
This is demonstrated when they were at lunch, “[Laurie] spoke insolently to his father, spilled his baby sister’s milk, and remarked that his teacher said we were not to take the name of the Lord in vain”(1). This creates a insidious mood by making us think why Laurie would be so rude and do such things like that when his mother thinks of him as her sweet child. Another example is when they were all talking and Laurie’s mom asked “What did he do? but Laurie slid off his chair, took a cookie, and left, while his father was still saying, See here, young man” (1). This shows Laurie is similar to Charles because he doesn't listen to his parents but instead ignores them, making him seem bad. Clearly with the clues the author gives us about Laurie it says himself that he is misbehaved and doesn’t know better giving us a slight hint that he is
As a child becomes a teenager they go from knowing right from wrong to having the ability to do more things without parental supervision. This kind of freedom without having someone to monitor your actions can lead to these young people doing things they
Many believe that it was the parents and the teachers fault for not doing what they were supposed to do. For example, Laurie’s parents could have taught him better to behave and to know how to follow the rules. In the beginning of the book, it says, “He came home the same way, the front door slamming open, his cap on the floor, and the voice suddenly become raucous shouting, “Isn’t anybody here?” It is being shown that even at home Laurie is being very disrespectful which can be because he hasn't been taught very well. Parent should start teaching at an early age. It seems that Laurie wasn't taught or just didn’t learn. While other people believe that it could have also been the teacher's fault. Some people think that the teacher should have called on the first day that Laurie or Charles had misbehaved. His actions were being repeated over and over throughout the book. Everyday when Laurie got home he would talk about Charles. Charles had misbehaved for quite a while. Normally at school, the teachers call home if you misbehave several times. The teacher could have done that too. Although if you do misbehave there will always be consequences for the person that caused like like in the real world; if you do a crime, you can get sent to jail or go to a judge,
Laurie does bad stuff and blames it on an imaginary boy named Charles.”The teacher spanked a boy for being fresh” (73). Today Charles hit the teacher’s friend. “Charles Yelled during story hour and hit a boy in the stomach” (75) .This shows that Laurie is manipulating his parents even when he is only a child. This is significant because his parents believe Laurie, and they aren’t doing anything about it. The parents believe “Charles” is a bad influence but it’s really just. When you first meet Laurie
To be an ethnic American is a culture all on its own. Hunger of memory by Richard Rodríguez gives an insight into the rarely viewed world. A person that no longer falls into either category of family or American community. Such an individual is stuck between two worlds, in which two different cultures collide yet form a rift through family, language and education.
Immigrating to America is a process in which many people all across the world entrust as their one way ticket to a better life. Whether they do so legally or illegally, coming to the United States ensures better opportunities, economically, politically, and so on, to people who would have otherwise been worse off in their countries of origin. Even so, the common understanding of being “better off” can be considered a misconstrued concept when it comes to living in the states. Many families that choose to immigrate to the U.S. fail to realize the cultural hardships that newcomers tend to face once on American soil. Anything from racial discrimination or bias at work, in neighborhoods, at school, etc., can all be challenges that people encounter when making a move to the U.S. Such challenges are described by Richard Rodriquez in his autobiography Hunger of Memory. In this passage, he explains how cultural differences between Mexican and American ways of life have shaped him into the person that he is today. He also chooses to highlights the problems that he faces growing up in a predominately white neighborhood, while attending a predominantly white institution. Much of his writing consists of the cultural differences and pressures he feels to assimilate to Western culture and how this process, in turn, changes him into the person that some may find to be unethical, but nonetheless, someone he is proud of.
In the short story "The Guest" by Albert Camus, Daru's predicament goes hand in hand with France's difficulties and Camus' self-appreciation. In the short story “The Guest” we are introduced to see Daru’s concern to attend the political situation in the French North
Attention is considered to be a core cognitive process, it refers to how people actively process specific information in the environment. Attention refers to how people select from information and stimuli in the environment, facilitating processing of some of the stimuli and inhibiting processing of others. "Everyone knows what attention is, it is the taking possession by the mind in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought...It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others, and is a condition which has a real opposite in the confused, dazed, scatterbrained state. “This definition of attention was proposed by psychologist William James (1890). This review will focus on literature that gives explanation to selective attention. Selective attention refers to the process where a person is able to select out of many stimuli and focus on the one they want and ignore other stimuli.
In the book, The Conscious Reader, there are many stories by many different authors. All these stories are different but at the same time they are alike. They all in some way deal with education. Whether it is using education, gaining education, or giving education, they all have their way to show that education is important.
According to Barnes “Autism is found throughout the world in families of all racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.”(Barnes 2015). Grandin also explains her experiences living with autism in her novel Thinking in Pictures. Grandin acquired her the ability to create and imagine through her visual thinking. In contrast, one barrier that hindered her was her inability to comprehend or associate social cues and emotion to a picture. With this in mind, Grandin using her natural talents to learn enabled her to push through what most people consider an accessibility issue.
Laurie, a young boy who was having trouble adjusting to recent changes in his life, took on the role of a non-existent boy called Charles to handle these arising adjustments. " Charles" was written by a woman named Shirley Jackson. Laurie may have posed as Charles since he was struggling to become familiar with having an infant sibling, as well as beginning kindergarten. He was a kindergartener who was stressed, due to new changes. The story takes place at Laurie's home and school during the 1950s.
The book Middle Passage by Charles Johnson tells a story about the triangular slave trade which took place early in America 's history. This book was written with such close attention to detail that it gave the reader a sense of what life was like on board a slave boat. Johnson 's writing style included many different techniques including the use of varying structure, imagery and language. All of these devices helped create a very successful story about slavery.
Esther Greenwood, the main character, is the most obvious comparison to Sylvia Plath herself. Esther is a troubled girl who is gifted with intelligence and scholarships to fancy schools and opportunities, but still finds herself in a pit of depression she can’t crawl out of. Both Esther and Sylvia are extremely intelligent, Sylvia being gifted with an IQ of 160. Sylvia shows her descent into depression through Esther, gradually getting worse and worse as she goes through college and realizes she has no idea what to do with her life.
