Atticus Finch Character

Atticus is one of the major characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, and he appears in almost every chapter. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout and appears in every chapter. While some might think Atticus is not a proper role model, he is a good role model because he treats everybody with respect, he sees other races as equal, and he fights for equality.

In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the author follows the childhood of the main character known as Jeremy Atticus Finch. He is the son of lawyer Atticus Finch, and older brother of Jean Louise Finch, also known as Scout. The family lives in a fictional town called Maycomb, Alabama. In their early lives, the two siblings were infatuated in figuring out the secrets of the Radley family, especially Boo Radley, in the house down their road. At the beginning of the story, their curiosity plays a big part in their lives. This builds during their many experiences and gives the readers a better sense of the characters’ traits. Jem Finch plays one of the key roles in the storyline and has a very brave, emotional, and protective personality.

The word hero does not have a universal definition. Some may say that a hero is a person who fights against monsters or criminals to save the day, or people who have superhuman qualities. Some may claim that a hero is more about what the person has inside of them and can be a seemingly average person in society. In general, heroes can live among us everyday. In Harper Lee’s stellar novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is portrayed as a kind man with a good head on his shoulders. Atticus Finch has broken out of the narrow literary definition of hero and has created his own category: a common man with exceptional, noble qualities. Atticus Finch should be considered a hero because Atticus was kind to the people of Maycomb, led his kids

“Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee 149). These words come from Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. He is offered the task to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, or leave him for another lawyer to defend his case in court. Although he knows it will put his family at risk of criticism and negativity towards the town, he boldly accepts the duty and burden of fighting for Tom Robinson. Accepting the case was not a blunder, it was a man making the correct decision by defending Tom Robinson.

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” (Christopher Reeve). During a period of time when employment, poverty, malnutrition and despair are plaguing the nation. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird set in Maycomb, Alabama reveals that the modern hero has to bridge the gap between multiple unequal classes of society to eliminate segregation and prejudice. Lee intelligently crafts the character Atticus Finch, a hardworking white lawyer, to model that of a modern hero.

There is always someone who will push against the current. The character, Atticus Finch, in the fictional novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is one of these people. Imagine living in a world where you were expected to help someone, whilst the rest of the world was against them. That would make someone a hero, helping someone, when even though it may not help them in the long run; you tried. Just trying can give someone so much hope, hope that maybe all is not lost, that maybe, just maybe you have a chance. Having hope given to you can change your life, it makes you realize that the whole world may not be against you; that maybe they have clouded judgement, that maybe they don't know any better. How would you describe that person? That person that gave you hope, that person that helped you. They would be a hero. Often complying with morals is difficult when others seemingly have no problem choosing to ignore them. This statement is not true for Atticus Finch, whose moral compass leads him to scrupulously defend the values in which he believes. To Kill a Mockingbird focuses on the impact of morals on society and on an innocent man’s life. When an African American, Tom Robinson, is wrongly accused of raping Caucasian girl Mayella Ewell, Atticus Finch is assigned to defend him. Institutionalized racial bias, still prevalent in the South in the 1930s, leads Atticus to understand that Robinson will not be acquitted, but he defends Robinson as well as he possibly can.

When you think of the greatest literary hero of all time you may think of Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, or even Luke Skywalker. However, a literary hero that makes many top lists is Atticus Finch, from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird is told from the perspective of Scout Finch, the young daughter of Atticus Finch. Scout tells the story of a few years in her life, including an influential trial. In this trial, Atticus is the lawyer for a black man, Tom Robinson, that was accused of raping and beating a white woman. Atticus is very good at his job and is able to put himself in the position of the other characters. That is also known as empathy. Atticus’s fame as one of the greatest literary heros could be not only attributed to his outstanding performance as Tom’s lawyer, but also to his ability to feel, teach, and make the readers feel empathy.

Atticus Finch is a lawyer in Maycomb. He is very tall and wears glasses. Atticus has two children one named Jean Louise Finch who everyone calls Scout and Jeremy Atticus Finch who is called Jem. Mrs. Finch who is Atticus’s wife died from a sudden heart attack. Economy is what he enjoys to do research about. What others think does not bother Atticus, even if the choses he makes might make people think lowly of him. Atticus does not think that color makes people any different. This is why he even will try his best in court even if his client is black. Everyone he meets and even his own children he treats as adults. Atticus believes that to be respected you must act in a way that deserves respect.

My opinion of Atticus is that he is a very good and caring father. He isn’t like most of the people in Maycomb. He doesn’t discriminate towards the african americans and he thinks that they should be treated the same as whites. Atticus is trying to teach his kids the same which I feel is good because if he doesn’t teach them then they will take after the people of Maycomb and become racist individuals. Calpurnia, who is the maid of the Finches house and also acts as a mother towards the kids. She is african american, but she is treated very fairly and is paid. It’s almost as if she’s a part of the family.

Fathers are typically someone whom a child looks up to. Whether the child looks at him for courage, guidance, help, or safety; a father can even be a role model for his children or even others. Nothing is better than a good and healthy relationship with a parent. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus proves to his children and even the whole town how smart, courageous, respectful, and wise he truly is.

Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird was the father of Jean Louise Finch and Jeremy Atticus Finch. He raised both children alone after his wife died. He works as a defense attorney in Maycomb and always looks for ways to teach Scout and Jem lessons. Atticus was intelligent and never messed around, he was the age of fifty when Scout was in first grade and he spoke to Jem and Scout as if they were adults. Scout complains on page 118 that Atticus never does anything that her peers fathers do and he is too old to play games, ”Our father didn’t do anything. He worked in an office...he never went hunting, he did not play poker or fish or drink or smoke. He sat in the living room and read.” Atticus probably didn’t play with Scout and Jem because he was fifty when Scout was seven and mostly came home to read. That is how Scout and Atticus spent time together.

Could Atticus Finch be the best parent in Maycomb many people would think so considering his many life lessons. Atticus Finch is Maycomb's poster parent he has taught his children many valuable lessons that everyone in this world should know. He has visibly teaches his kids numerous important life lessons throughout the whole book, but the three most valuable lessons that his kids learned were: that life is not always fair, that you have to stand up for what you believe in, and finally that its important to do the right thing no matter what it costs you. One of atticus most prevalent lessons throughout the book is that life is not always fair.

To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee features the main characters of the Finch family, (Scout, Jem, and Atticus) the Radley family, (Boo and Nathan) Calpurnia, and Dill. Atticus is the father to brother sister duo Jem and Scout. The names Scout and Jem are nicknames, Scout’s full name is Jean Louise Finch and Jem’s full name is Jeremy Atticus Finch. Calpurnia is the family’s cook and helps to watch Scout and Jem. Calpurnia also mentors the children for she taught Scout how to write. Scout, being 5 years old, is very intelligent, curious, and empathetic for her age and this historic novel is told from her point of view. Jem who is 4 years older than Scout looks out for her and gets along well with his sister. Atticus is their father and he has raised the children for most of their life by himself with Calpurnia. Atticus’ wife died when Scout was two. Atticus is a lawyer which effects Scout and Jem causing them to better understand what goes on in their town . The Radley family is a very strange and closed off family that differentiates from the rest of the town. Boo and Nathan Radley are brothers who live at home with their mother. Nathan came back to live with Boo and Mrs. Radley after Mr. Radley had passed. Boo Radley was described by Jem as a man with “a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time.” Boo has a scary image and never seems to come outside of his house and takes a particular interest in the Finch children. Dill is a bit older than Scout and comes to visit every summer and stays with his aunt. Jem and Scout befriend him and they hang out often. The setting of the story is in a made up town called Maycomb located in Alabama during the time of The Great Depression. This book is essentially about a loss of innocence, as represented by the Mockingbird. A Mockingbird doesn’t bother anyone or thing, nevertheless being innocent. Killing a Mockingbird is then essentially killing or losing that innocence.
