Introduction I admire August/Auggie Pullman from the book Wonder, who has won the genetic lottery which made war on his face. He has a great amount of strength. Though Auggie is very self-conscience, but his other qualities help him overcome school issues. August also is a hilarious boy, which is a very good quality in a person. I respect Auggie because of his great qualities. August Pullman’s Strength Auggie Pullman has some of the greatest strength I have ever seen/read. To quote the book Wonder, ”Ever since I was little, the doctors told my parents that someday I’d need hearing aids.” and “‘Do I really have to wear this, Mom?’ I said, trying not to cry. ‘I hate them. They don’t make any difference!’” This helps show strength from Auggie because he does not want to wear these hearing aids, worried that people would notice, and judge him, more than they already do, but he wears them anyway. To add on, quoting Wonder, "I don't know if there's a word that means the same as 'brightly' in terms of hearing, but I wish I knew I one, because my ears were hearing brightly now." When the ear doctor turned on the hearing aids for Auggie, he no longer didn't want to wear them and worry about others, he loved …show more content…
As reported by Wonder, "Like the other day I saw Maya writing a note to Ellie on a piece of Uglydoll stationary, and I don't know why, but I just randomly blurted said: 'Did you know that the guy who created the Uglydolls based them on me?'" This alone proves that Auggie makes jokes, and once Maya saw that Auggie was okay of joking about his face, she laughed very hard. "'Actually, technically speaking, her full name is Darth Daisy, but we never really called her that.'" and "'Darth Daisy! That's funny! Darth Daisy!'" Furthermore, this is also an example of Auggie making a joke where another person responds with laughter. Ultimately, Auggie's sense of humor is one of the
When Auggie’s mom told him that he was going to Beecher Prep he was really nervous, but was happy that he can make some new friends. He will have a great time so that maybe he can’t have a negative impact.
Near the end of the book Auggie feels accepted. On page 282 we find evidence of this when he says, “It was like I was one of them.” When he says “them” he is referring to the other students. Auggie could finally feel “normal” and it is necessary for August to feel this way because people have always seen Auggie as strange because of his face. At a point August even forgets he has Treacher Collins syndrome. On page 307 we find an example of this, “I wasn’t even thinking about my face. I was just smiling a big happy smile.” August felt like it didn 't matter what his face looked like. It just mattered that he was happy. For once, Auggie didn 't feel like everyone was trying to get away from him; on the contrary, he said, “It kind of felt like everyone wanted to get close to me.” (pg 308) August can finally feel like a “normal” kid.
His facial difference was his main struggle in life. An example of Auggie demonstrating the May precept from Mr.Browne was when he chose not to report the 7th graders who were using firecrackers, bullied Auggie physically and verbally, and took his hearing aids (even though the teachers found out anyway). In the same situation, Auggie wanted to run away from the 7th grade bullies, but he stayed, because he didn’t want to leave Jack behind. More than enough times, Auggie always put up with Julian’s bullying and mean notes, and he never told a teacher. He was never rude when he noticed people staring at him excessively, or looking away when they saw him. Auggie was always very good at being good to everyone he
Pluto is Auggie's old friend Christopher. Christopher and Auggie were best friends from the time they were babies until Christopher's family moved away. they were Star Wars buddies through thick and thin. Pluto's chapter is a great story of all Auggies memories that you may have missed in the first wonder
In the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Auggie shows insecurity by being antisocial, hiding his face, and blaming his looks on everything that goes wrong. When his sister Via had a school play, she didn’t invite Auggie because she thought he would be bored but Auggie thought his sister didn’t invite him because he was deformed. “You think I don’t know what’s going on? You just don’t want your fancy little friends to find out your brother is a freak” (Auggie 218). According to this quote, August is insecure because he didn’t get invited to sister’s play and blamed it on his appearance right away instead of considering other possibilities. Another example of August’s insecurity is when he almost missed what ended up being the best thing that ever happened in his life. He explained “Via, I don’t think I should go to the campout. What’s the point? I won’t make any friends because everyone will scream and run away from me. I know I would if I saw someone who looked like me” (Auggie 263). This quote shows how insecure he is because
Children need strong, resilient role models to learn from and many of these characters are just that. Although Auggie is only 10 years old, he captures the mind of the reader and you find yourself asking “Could I be that strong?” or “Would I be able to rise above the bullying?” The characters are self-reflective in age-appropriate
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a new school with no friends and a different face? To have everyone look at you and make a repelling face? That’s what it was like for August Pullman in the 5th grade. Auggie is different that everybody else in 5th grade. Auggie was born with a facial deformity so he looks different that other people he has had 27 so far in his life. Auggie goes to a school called Beecher Prep. In my opinion Beecher Prep has had a positive effect on Auggie’s life because now he has made more friends like Summer, Jack Will, Max G, Max W, and Reid. Sometimes it is hard for auggie to fit in when people like julian step into the picture, but overall Beecher Prep has made Auggie’s life a little easier.
“‘The main thing I have is this thing called man-di-bu-lo-facial dys-os-tosis-which took me forever to learn how to pronounce, by the way.’” Because he has a face that not many think of as comforting, he has lived most of his life ashamed of the way he looks. As the book progresses, however, Auggie learns that looks aren’t as important as they seem. He learns this with the help of his friends and family. Auggie’s friends have helped him have a better experience at Beecher Prep by sitting with him at lunch and talking to him.
August Pullman is a 10-year-old boy who has a mandibulofacial dysostosis. Which causes his face to appear different. Because of Auggie’ appearance, people a very unkind to him. Auggie has gotten 27 surgeries to help him with his facial deformity. He lives with his parents, his older sister Via, and his dog Daisy. Auggie has been home schooled up until the 5th grade, but his parents decide it's time for him to go to a real school. They register him to Beecher Prep and take him to meet the principal, Mr. Tushman. Before Auggie starts school he takes a tour with three students who will be in the same grade as he was going in. On the tour, he meets Jack Will, Charlotte, and Julian. Jack Will was the kind kid, but Julian was really mean to
For example, Julian compares Augusts face to Darth Sidious. Julian even wore a Darth Sidious costume to school for halloween to make fun of August. People at August school even made up a game called the plaque. The plaque is where if you touch Auggie or Auggie touches you, you have thirty seconds to wash your hands or put hand sanitizer on. According to “A Teen and a Trolley Reveal Society’s Dark Side” by, Bethany Brookshire.
so when he puts on his hearing aids he believes that people will call him more names. “ I can’t wear them mom, everyone will notice”(Palacio 212). Readers can realize from this quote that August wants to be as normal as possible and hearing aids aren’t the answer. You are also informed that August doesn’t want to be there because his least favorite body part is his
People jump to conclusions that he is weird just cause of his unique face. But there are characters in the book that don't judge him like summer. When they first meets she gets to know him and soon become really good friends. “Kindness is the key to any friendship”. When Auggie tries to make friends on the first day of school he meets a girl named Summer at the lunch table.
Auggie knew people were whispering, pointing, laughing, and staring at him because he knew it was happening. He overcame this challenge like a champion. He acted like everything was ok and didn’t know that those things were happening. This didn’t just happen in school, it happened at the park, in public, in restaurants. I feel bad for August because he is always getting talked about but he shows to people that he is brave and doesn’t care what you say or
