Those of us off faith can state that God works through all types of people including sinners to do his work, Augustine of Hippos was one such man. God can and will use anyone He wants to accomplish his final goal. Augustine was born to a Christian mother and a pagan as a father.1 He left home in his teens to study in Carthage. Although his childhood did encompass a Christian influence he himself did not follow this practice and led a rather hedonistic lifestyle. Augustine went through many religious discoveries including one of dualism which he found very acceptable. While in the garden of his home agonizing over his sinful and moral behaviors of his past he heard a “child in a nearby house repeat in a sin-song=voice the refrain, Tolle lege (pick up and read).”5 He reads the Epistle to the Romans where the Apostle exhorts to abandon the works of the flesh and to be clothed with Christ (cf. 13:13-14). Augustine’s confession is an account of his life and his struggles and God’s divine plan for him. However, according to Ferguson he returned to Africa and founded a small monastery where he retreated with a few friends to dedicate himself to the contemplative life and study. This was his life's dream. In the end we learn that his conversion is described in his autobiographical work, “confessions” and Augustine framed the doctrine teaching of "original sin" for the early Church.
