Every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and therefore should be treated accordingly. Equality and social justice are additional factors that contribute to the response of Australian society in welcoming refugees throughout history. The vietnamese refugees of the 1970’s were welcomed by society in an attempt to shift away from the ‘White Australia Policy’. Charities and church organisations such as the Australian Red Cross also provided assistance with clothing, housing and other required adjustments for example education. Nevertheless, in present day, the Church is significantly more accepting of refugees by supporting charities, increasing awareness, working alongside refugees and providing aid to asylum seekers. Within the general society, some groups and individuals are still unfortunately racially prejudiced because of their lack of knowledge. Service is something that every person does in their life. I try to do as much service as I can, which means a lot of my service is in the summer or while school in on breaks. While service can be done through organizations and for well-known causes, service is also seen in everyday life. Service can be through small acts of kindness, such as, holding open the door, helping someone who’s carrying a particularly heavy load, or simply just being there when they need a shoulder to lean on. Service is about making someone day brighten with little rays of kindness and to show that someone out there definitely cares for them.

The Salvation Army is committed to providing care for asylum seekers in Nauru and Manus Island regardless of politics or popularity. As an organisation they have provided care and support for the world’s vulnerable and suffering since 1865. Asylum seekers in the RPCs are facing uncertainty; they are isolated and incredibly vulnerable. As a Christian organisation, the Salvation Army are motivated by the love of Christ and passionate about helping vulnerable people. In Matthew 25:35-40 Jesus tells his disciples: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ In The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) Jesus tells the story of a man who is beaten and left for dead on the side of the road. A religious leader passes by and ignores him. The man is then found by a complete stranger – who also happens to be from a different religious group – who stops and helps tend to his injuries. The mandate of this parable is clear; that we are to care for the suffering, the vulnerable and hurting, regardless of who they might be. We are to be a neighbour to all.

As I sat in the doctor’s office with my five-year-old son, the nurse came to me and said. You have the most well behaved child I have ever seen. My son, Elijah, was sitting on the chair reading at a book. So I am assuming that this nurse does not see many children sitting and reading. My son’s behavior of sitting and reading a book, while waiting for the doctor to see him, allowed him to be labeled as a well behaved child. Although the other children were playing with the toys that were present in the doctor’s office, they seem to be well behaved, as none of the children were hitting or taking toys from one another.
