Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Autism defines as a developmental disability affecting verbal, and non-verbal communication and social interaction. Many experts estimated that 1 out of 68 children are diagnosed with autism and researchers are not sure about what causes it? There are numerous treatment to support children with autism but there is no known cure (Mash and Wolfe, 2015). In article,"The Kid Who Beat Autism", Ruth Padawer states that autism can be cured with A.B.A therapy whereas "The Kid Who Don 't Beat Autism" Joel Yanofsky refers that autism cannot be cured. I believe it depends upon an individual. One patient can significantly develop while other remains the same. Both articles helped me to draw a conclusion for my claim. As Padawer mentioned B who was the patient of Autism recovered with the help of ABA therapy. According to the Yanofsky, Matthew who recieved the same therapy as B did not recovered. While it sounds promising that autism can be treated, it is important to acknowledge that autism is a highly complex disorder with many different symptoms. Hence the saying: “If you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism.” (Yanofsky ). This quote states that while a certain type of treatment might be very helpful for one child, it might not be as effective for another child. Reseachers have confirmed that a significant number of autistic children legitimately lose their diagnosis. Those
1 in 68 people in the US have autism, this includes 1 in 189 girls and 1 in 42 boys. Autism is a difference in perception; technically it’s a developmental disorder that is the result of a difference in brain chemicals. Scientists don’t know what causes autism or why it’s stayed in the human gene pool for so long. People with autism could have a wide variety of symptoms, but some of the most common characteristics are fixations on things they like, reliance on routines, and lack of social skills. Autism can be formally diagnosed at ages as young as 3. There is no medical test to diagnose autism, rather a trained professional in the psychology field will perform a developmental screening and a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. When a child is diagnosed with autism, therapy is strongly recommended. The earlier treatment starts the better because certain aspects of the disorder can be lessened through therapy. Therapy helps the mind and the body, certain therapies can help rebuild your brain, so to speak.
Autism is most commonly described as a developmental disability that is diagnosed over a broad spectrum of impairment and identifiers; and within the first three to five years of life. The number of cases of ASD have steadily grown over the past several decades and can be seen in 1 in every 88 births (Ogletree, Morrow-Odom, &
We now know that autism is caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences and that there are many types of autism disorders (Autism, 2016). Some people with autism don’t need each much help and support as others may need. There is no cure for autism, as it is a lifelong diagnosis which may make it seem negative, but doctors and other professionals can help kids learn to communicate better. Almost everyone on the autism spectrum has a great to deal to offer the world, as they are the most passionate people you'll ever meet.
Autism has a variety of symptoms throughout the process. Therefor, “Because there can be overlap in symptoms between ASD and other disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) it's important that treatment focus on a person’s specific needs rather than the diagnostic label” (“What are”). Having problems with social relationships, are more harmful for people with autism. People diagnosed with ADHD mostly have problems with their behaviors, while the other half battles through inattention and hyperactivity.
It is very important to treat those with autism as an individual because each diagnosis is different, it is well known that autism is not just one disorder with set symptoms and characteristics, but a spectrum disorder in which there are a large variety of characteristics and symptoms that will differ from person to person. Due to this there is no set treatment for autism, the most effective interventions are tailored to meet the specific characteristics of each individual.
Parents try their best to keep their children from getting hurt or sick, but no matter how hard they try, sometimes something will always go wrong. We cannot avoid all uncertainties; Autism is among one of these uncertainties that parents try their best to avoid. According to the center for disease control One out of every one hundred and fifty children are born with autism each year in America, that is one percent of American children with autism, eighty percent of which are male and about forty to twenty percent of females (CDC). One point five million children have already been living with this diagnosis, of autism long before the media brought into public attention, so as the rise of autism increases it is also important that the knowledge of autism increase.
Before delving into the problems that arise, one should understand how to classify autism. According to O’Callaghan, “autism is not a single disease but a name...given to a behavioral phenotype that may have many aetiologies” (O’Callaghan). While the terminology O’Callaghan used may appear daunting because it leans towards scientific discussion, his definition explains that one should not assume autism is just a disease in itself, but is more than that. It serves another role of representing how an autistic individual acts and that the way they behave is a physical characteristic one can identify when regarding them. He additionally mentioned that autism may not have one cause, but may be composed of several causes attributed towards it.
Children With Autism Children with autism have the possibility to improve greatly, and some even overcome the effects of autism if appropriate therapies are begun early enough. A multifaceted disorder, autism has long baffled professionals and parents alike. At a point in time, doctors gave parents absolutely no hope for the recovery of their children. But recently, new treatments and therapies have shown that improvement is possible. With early intervention, intensive care, some children have if not fully recovered, improved, and have been integrated into schools, indistinguishable from their peers.
