At the start of the course my understanding of faith was that it was a synonym for belief. While that is not completely incorrect, I now understand that it is so much more than that. Over break I started reading What Happened by Hillary Clinton, and while I don’t particularly agree with many of her beliefs she provides perhaps the best definition of faith that I have ever encountered. Having faith means something different for each person that uses it. For some, it is a complete confidence in someone or something. This deals with the non-religious side of faith. And others believe that faith is the strong belief in God, based on spiritual understanding rather than proof. This is the religious understanding or definition of what faith is. But to me, faith is trusting or believing in an idea or a person, even when no one else does or when there is no evidence to back up my beliefs. Faith cannot be seen with the physical eye. That is why the word says that we walk by faith and not by sight. Each piece of fabric that we add to our faith makes up that quilted blanket, it starts takes up space. The pieces fit together to fulfill a purpose. What is faith? Faith can be many different things based on different types of people perspective. Some people say it's about trust while others say it has to do with religion. When it comes to trusting people faith is about believing in someone even if you may not have proof they are correct. However faith ties in with religion in ways that religious people must have faith or trust in their leaders or the people they look up to.

Views of faith varies person to person. St. Thomas Aquinas sees faith as a necessity for all Christians. Christian Smith views faith from a sociological perspective, more analytical rather than spiritual.Tim Chappell believes that faith is a virtue that requires balance. Buddhist Bokin Kin sees Christian faith as a path towards truth, light, and life. Or, faith can lead you to see miracles in the natural world. Lastly, I view faith as a tool as a means to grow closer to God. Faith is different person to person, it’s unique to the user, and ultimately, is a cause for reflective thinking.

Faith ~ An unmovable trust in God that results in encouraging others to trust God more, no matter what the circumstances.
