In the book The Martian, an astronaut named Mark Watney is thrown into an awful situation on Mars. A sandstorm had come in while they were landing the Ares 3. The crew needed to get out of this trouble. When trying to get back to safety, Mark is hit by debris and is not able to find his crew. His crew all successfully got back to the Mars ascent vehicle but Mark. The crew is taught to never leave a man behind. They search for him but the sandstorm created low visibility. They see that Mark's suit is damaged and he going to die. They are forced to abandon Mark on Mars. Throughout the book, Mark, NASA, and Mark's crew show no sign of giving up, and their tenacity to never quit even when obstacles are thrown their way.

Book The Martian is a novel about NASA astronaut Mark Watney, a botanist and mechanical engineer, who has been left stranded by his crew of the Ares 3 mission after they were forced to evacuate the red planet due to an intense dust storm and high winds. The main character – Mark Watney – is probably the most interesting of them all. What is so interesting about him is that he is a botanist and mechanical engineer, and how he uses these skills to survive on a planet with no food - just the man-made base built on Mars and the tools inside it. Another interesting character is the young NASA engineer who is getting very bored with her job, and even wants to quit sometimes, Mindy Park.

We find mars so fascination because if you know what to look in the sky, the reason why is obvious enough. Mars is visible to the naked eye, and clearly red. It’s also close: our ability to see it so easily prove to the relative nearness of the planet. The world around us now is loaded with references to mars: witness movies with titles like “mission to mars” (2000) and “red Planet: (2000) fact-filled stories or films (about an event or person) like NOVA’s “Can we make it to Mars?” , not to mention numerous science fiction stories like Ray Bradbury’s 1950s “The Martian Records/tells a story” and non-fiction books like “The case for Mars” and (definitely/ as one would expect) “packing for mars” which both explore what it would take to send not just a robotic analog for people/(the kindness of people), but actual living breathing humans. At 1:31 a.m. eastern on Monday, August 6, our fascination with mars continued when the mars science laboratory landed on the red planet. It’s not the first wanderer humans have sent to mars: NASA has been sending robotic (people who represent a government, etc.) since Viking 1 landed in 1976.

The character Mark Watney in the book, “The Martian”, had to deal with a food shortage. In the story, Watney had to survive 549 days on Mars and had to produce around 149 days worth of food. Watney had to create an environment to plant potatoes. These plants would need water, heat, and nutrients. He obtained the amount of water with the amount he could get from the water reclaimed and separating hydrazine. Watney used an iridium catalyst and he would put a drop of hydrazine (rocket fuel) to get hydrogen and nitrogen gas. The atmospheric regulator would remove the nitrogen gas, but the hydrogen wouldn’t be removed. Then, Watney removed most of the oxygen from the hab and began the chemical reaction of the hydrogen and the oxygen becoming water.

That is what happened to Mark Watney in The Martian. He is trapped on Mars and tries to the best of his ability to survive. The Martian is a great science fiction novel written by Andy Wier. The story is set on Mars, where the main character uses technology and his knowledge in science to escape death. Mars One is a non-profit organization founded by Bas Lansdorp and Arno Wielders in March of 2011 and based in the Netherlands (Mars One). The Mars One mission is to put a human colony on Mars by 2023. Mars One has already begun recruiting astronauts to be trained and eventually sent on a one way trip to mars. Over the next several years Mars One will begin by turning the training program into a reality TV show to raise funding for the mission. The first few launches to mars will be to send equipment ahead of the astronauts so that living space will already be there before they arrive.

Would you travel to a distant planet to colonize it, never come back, and never see your family in person again? That is what Mars One implies when you recruit to be a part of their mission to colonize Mars. Mars One is recruiting anyone that is in good physical and mental condition and 18 years or older to join the mission to colonize Mars, but they don’t list all the dangers on the front page of the website. This mission is unethical, extremely dangerous, and should not be executed.

A number of things have been attributed to the red planet in contemporary times, much of it research-based, some cartoon-based. One’s childhood could have been filled with various science fiction novels about humanity colonizing the red planet or watching Bugs Bunny outsmart the Martian and his dog.

Ever since the beginning of physics and Astronomy man has pondered the question, “Are we alone?” Scientists have studied and collected data from the eight Planets. However, mostly all of them lack the key nutrients needed. Except when we took a closer look at the red planet (Mars), one can see a couple of those nutrients on Mars. The most outstanding features of the red planet are its water, Atmosphere, and extreme storms.
