Basic Media And Its Impact On Society

Throughout the years the use of technology has increased, and expanded. Mass media plays a vital role in society. Mass media can be defined as any means of communication, to an extremely large group of people. Technological advancements have been extremely beneficial for prior generations, the generation we now live in, and will be for the future generations to come. Such as, providing news for the world to hear, entertainment, and much more. Some examples of media would be television, films, newspapers, and the Internet. Unfortunately along with benefits, there are disadvantages concerning gender discrimination, and sexism. Such as, women feelings forced and obligated to stay at home with their children instead of working, and the representation of beauty involving both men and women. Examples of how the media can accomplish this would be through the use of advertisements, movies, magazines, and the radio. The media has an enormous effect on people within society today.

Journalists are infamous for their motivation to produce hard hitting editorials, twisting the truth for their own selfish benefit. Steve Chapman strays away from this stereotype by ensuring integrity in every article. Continuously, Chapman strives to present the public with his analytical opinions. Douglas Adams describes the drive of Steve Chapman; “To give real service, you must add something which cannot be bought of measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity”. Steven Chapman, who writes weekly op-eds for the Chicago Tribune, delivers insight into national headlines using suggestive rhetoric appeals to address the reader’s fears of uncertainty followed by accredited reasoning, a condescending tone targeted at the written subject, calling the reader for reformation within society, and dashes to separate general statements from definitive fact, shifting from a mission-based point of view to thought-provoking opinionated writing in order to spark motivation within his readers using his opinions so that they can take action to better their communities in hopes of improving future national development.

Comparing two newspaper articles, one from a tabloid and one from a broadsheet will convey the different techniques that tabloids and broadsheets use to present stories. Media in general, aim to inform and interest the audience which consist of many different types. Diverse emotions and ideas are created by the media; foremost tabloids. Tabloids are papers like ‘The Sun’, ‘The Mirror’, ‘The Daily Mail’, ‘The Express’ and ‘The Star’. In contrast to these are broadsheets like ‘The Times’, ‘The Guardian’ and ‘The Daily Telegraph’. Broadsheets are often known as the ‘quality press’ being more informing and formal in the manner they convey information and news stories.

Throughout history things have changed in society, especially in the past fifty years. Society has allowed the creators to either cater to the consumers wants or to do as they please. By allowing the creators to have this power, the society that is known today has both people pleasers and people that like to be in control. Newspapers have went from trying to cater to their audience to choosing to provide the information the way that they believe will attract more views. Cell phone creators were able to change how contacting someone over the phone from only a specific place into being able to do so at anytime and anywhere. Newspaper creators of The Onion take a different approach than the makers of cell phones on how they attract their consumers but they have both changed to adhere to the time period.

When determining which factors apply to articles, one may examine the characteristics of these articles and then make an informed decision about which concepts apply and why. On October 15th I visited the newseum.org website and examined the front pages from three separate newspaper’s. All of the different front pages featured different headlines. The stories from these headlines featured information that I could use to apply the previously mentioned concepts.

The goal of an Op-Ed is to present your opinions in such a fashion that those reading are persuaded by your argument for it. All three of the examples I chose have an opinion to present and they used similar methods to do so. The first article abouts trumps education plan has a very terse tone throughout the entire article. It doesn't fully acknowledge any counter argument in virtually any aspect. The thesis is not explicitly stated till the conclusion of the article which makes it argument unclear till you well into 90 percent of the piece. Instead the author uses a narrative set up to justify its viewpoints. This choice isn't a staple in the genre however it helps distract from the obvious bias the writers always have. News is supposed to be newly received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events. However, on Fox News, CSNBC, and some local news stations they are giving peoples factual news, but giving people bais opinions about what has happened. News reporters and journalist are committing their time to give citizens a point of view based on what the agency believes. People are forming their own opinion based on the bais information they are receiving. News agencies are attempting to sway the public opinion by manipulated the information to support their liberal or conservative agenda. Unfortunately their are people that will believe everything they hear this is due to the fact that they are unable to access information themselves. Teaching slaves to read was illegal. The reason being uneducated people are easily controlled. News networks can present opinion as hard news, because of public apathy or unwillingness to educate themselves with regard to the facts. Public willingness to accept what is presented as a fact is what makes them easily manipulated to opinions.

There's this constant whittling away of information, each successive entry from each news source cutting away at details and forming synopses and simplifying the narrative until a story goes from a full-length article that provides detailed, relatively mundane information, then suddenly it turns into an outrageous headline meant to infuriate the masses.

Representation shown in the media is not something people should be taking lightly. It has strong effects on everyone, whether it 's fully grown adults, young children or teenagers. How the media present the 'real ' world to us can cause our beliefs and views to be skewed. Body image is an exceptionally big aspect of the media that should not be ignored. The ideal females being shown to teenage girls causes them to find many flaws in their own, non-air brushed selves. Body image extends beyond itself as well, into cliques of the social hierarchy and finding 'true love '. The three main focus texts Mean Girls, Creme Magazine and Disney Princesses all have strong representations of beautiful people being the most successful whether will love, popularity or exposure in the media. These perceptions cause girls to look at their body image negatively and therefore have strong implications on wider life due to low self-esteem.
