I. Basketball is one of the most famous sports known today.
II. It was invented back in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith.
III. Basketballs extensive history, basic concepts, and strict regulations are what has evolved the sport into what it is today. (Change Slide)

I. Unlike most sports whose origins are somewhat unclear, Basketball is the only major American sport with a clearly identifiable inventor.

II. Many of you have probably played basketball at some point in your life but you may not know all of the rules and concepts. (Change Slide) Basketball is a team sport made up of two teams of five players that each try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground.
A. The game is played on a rectangular court with hoops at each end
B. The ball is moved down the court toward the basket by passing or dribbling. The team with the ball is called the offense. The team without the ball is called the defense. They try to steal the ball, contest shots, steal and deflect passes, and rebound.
