To become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, one must complete community service in order to give back to the community. When I was twelve years old, I chose an organization that I found interesting and that I wanted to spread awareness for, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.. I felt a personal connection to this organization, and for my Bat Mitzvah project, I created and sold necklaces, where all the proceeds went to the museum. This project inspired me and helped me mature from a girl, to a woman. Ever since my Bat Mitzvah project, I have been making these necklaces in my spare time. Many schools require students to participate in community service, but I think this is a good idea. Many schools do not require students to volunteer in community service. I agree that students should have to volunteer to graduate. I think that students should be forced to volunteer for community service sometime in their high school career as it makes people work and shows them what work really is. It also gets people off there lazy tail.

For my community service activity, I have chosen to participate in SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Club. It is an organization to empowering students to make better decisions in life. As a member, I will discourage the usage of bad habits by students in peaceful ways and promote programs. Something I will do is funding for people in need, make a poster for Breast Cancer and other programs, and advise students to make the right choices in life. By my participation, I will be able to promote a student to make the right decisions and staying positive in high school and in the future.
As surprising as it may sound, I have been doing community service since the sixth grade and it is a new experience each time. It all began with a community clean up known as 'Keep McAllen Beautiful' as we got there everyone seemed excited to be there. When applying for a position at a job, managers always check to see how much experience you have in order to check if you are qualified. When filling out a college application there are always questions that ask to write down any extra curricular activities you participated in or any clubs/service work you did and for how long. It is important to be a part of the community and to be dedicated to one or two locations for a certain amount of time to show commitment and effort. A student that has been a part of an organization for about three months and has not missed will be prefered at a college than a student that goes five times a month. Community service does not only help build relationships but allows students to spend their time learning new skills and it will benefit them in the future. Community service for high school seniors should be mandatory because it will teach the students how to be responsible, allow them to explore in depth something related to their career and improve their communication skills.
This past summer I participated in Camp Holy Cross where I donated my time ad counseled kids from eight to three each day. I worked in the field thus I had to set up games, instruct them and take care of the kids while they were there. Another event I participated in with my church was the soup kitchen. This is where members of the Church’s youth group get together and put on a dinner. I also participated in the crop walk. As a second year National Honor Society student, the last couple of years I have been more focused on ways I can help my community to help get all my service hours in for the end of my high school NHS career. I’ve always loved doing little things to help someone who needs it but I never thought about the things that I do everyday count just as much as the other things. Community service to me, is more than just holding the door open for someone, picking up trash, or helping someone with their groceries. I want to help people grow and be a better person while serving my community. I want to do more than volunteer, I want to impact the lives of people and I feel that is what I have done.
My fourth grade class has participated in a service-learning project for the past eight years. Before the Christmas season, we read several books about giving, including a children’s version of “The Gift of the Magi”. Then we discuss how the money that parents send for the students’ Christmas five dollar gift exchange could be used for something else. The children vote whether or not they want to keep the normal gift exchange or donate the money to another cause (every year the students have chosen to donate their gift money to others). Then the students brainstorm organizations or ideas for the money. After the list is narrowed down to five ideas, the children are broken into groups and given one of the organizations to research, and then they write a persuasive report to present to the class. After the students have heard the persuasive reports, a final vote is taken to choose the organization. Next, the students are responsible for writing a letter home to their parents explaining why they have chosen to donate their gift exchange money to the charity or organization. We have sent care packages to overseas soldiers, bought goodie bags for nursing home patients, and sent money to Heifer
Due to my involvement in my school, I have a plethora of opportunities that affect my community. As a member of the National Honor Society, we stay involved in activities that benefit our chapter and Walkerton itself. For instance, we annually undergo a food drive at our school in order to supply food for the people in the community. Then we transport the food to the food pantry and once every month we take turns to distribute the food to the people who need it. This distribution we do for the community aids the people in need as most people receiving the food are unable to transport the food themselves. Alongside the food drives, I spend hours of volunteering for concessions, tutoring students after school, and aiding for the band teacher.
I have been active in my community from an early age and I plan on doing the same as an adult. Community service, outside of being a requirement for the IB Diploma program, has been an interest of mine since I volunteered in elementary school as a translator for parents taking computer classes. This experience inspired me from an early age to pursue a lifestyle in which I can help others. I have demonstrated leadership in the community service activities I have been a part of. I have built character as a result of these actions.
I volunteer and participate in activities to better the community and my surroundings. Over the last three years, I have spent many hours working on our class activities including homecoming festivities. I worked nearly every concession stand that my class sponsored last year and a few concession stands that the clubs I’m a part of sponsored. For the last four years, I’ve been a member of the Eisleben Lutheran Church. In these four years, I’ve read scriptures to the congregation, participated in teaching during Vacation Bible School, and volunteered at dinners to raise money. I also helped the Speech and Debate club host a meet for other schools. For National Honor Society, I will volunteer for activities for my school and community without compensation.
I feel that after all of the sacrifices that have been made by the community for my benefit, I have an obligation to give back and re-pay what has been given and more, I have an immense amount of appreciation and gratitude toward my community and all they have done for my peers and I. I've always attempted my best to help my community. One way I contributed to my community is through participation in the 11/11 Club at our high school. The club is in charge of planning the Veterans Day ceremonies at our school. One of the main reasons that I joined this club is that both of my parents are veterans and I felt it would be a way to return the favor, even if it was just a bit. In earlier years, parents and teachers planned and organized the Veterans Day activities. However, this year my high school is trying something different by having the students run it. As an 18-year-old tennager, I was forced by my parents to participate a summer volunteer program in my freshman year. Even though I felt that I was a victim of “tyranny” in the beginning, I realized that I actually enjoyed the process of helping people in the middle of the program. Now, I participate that program every year as an active member, and I have gained the personal enrichment that I am unable to learn from other sources such as math club or SAT preparatory class. There is no doubt that community service can bring essential benefits in helping students develop their moral value and future interest, and it should be mandatory because some students attempt to utilize community service as a tool for their own profit without the school supervision.
