As the elections draw nearer, the race to become president in the United States is as intense as ever. Increasingly, there is more news coverage than ever. As a left-leaning media source, the articles in their archives are biased. “I’m with Stupid: Bathroom Politics and the Rise of Ben Carson” is no exception to that of a left-leaning bias. It talks about the rise of Ben Carson in a negative light and blames the presidential candidate for “vulgar politics”. The article provides adequate background information on Ben Carson’s life prior to running for president. It presents it as a one of those with humble beginnings; however, it immediately criticizes him for his policies immediately after. There is a clear bias that the author of the article
Benjamin Solomon “Ben” Carson was born on September 18, 1951, in Detroit Michigan. He is a Yale graduate and a retired neurosurgeon. He has a wife who he had been married to since 1975 and three lovely children. Even though Ben is currently a republican, he has changed his political affiliation four times. Before 1981, he was a democrat, from 1981-1999 he was a republican, from 1999-2014 he was independent, and now since 2014, he is a republican. Ben is a very successful man. He has written many books about his medical and political issues, he even has a movie based on an autobiography he wrote called “Gifted Hands”
Which presidential candidate leads the polls? Does belligerent racism personify Trump? Does Hillary have what it takes to deal with her Benghazi baggage? Does Bush have daddy issues? Does Carson pop sleeping pills? Does Sanders have a mind as crazy as his hair? Often, these topics lead to heated debates about who will truly make America great again. The media constantly divulges about “[the] Baggage, the Gaffes and the Billionaires” of the upcoming election (Dickinson and Kelley), and with the 2016 presidential election around the corner, the topic of politics has become a bullet nearly impossible to dodge. Maureen Dowd a disputatious Op-Ed columnist for the New York Times cajoles and educates her audience through the use of emotional appeals, a polemic writing style to argue controversial topics, as well as a dauntless and sardonic tone appealing to the audience, in order to convince the readers of her tenacious viewpoints against political leaders while also captivating and further informing the public about the political parties.
The 2008 campaign was rife with racist imagery and attacks, but in fairness this divisiveness was present in both the Democratic and Republican parties. The “Birther Movement,” which claims that President Obama was not born in Hawaii but instead in Kenya, or another muslim state, and frequently claims that the former President is secretly a muslim. This case in many ways is the culmination of the issue facing “The Party Decides,” because John McCain, now the Republican nominee after falling short eight years before, struck down notions that then Senator Obama was foreign born, Muslim, or an Arab. This was not an easy
With the impending election looming closer and closer, the approach of the presidential throne seems to elicit a plethora of opinions on who is the most viable candidate. However, the candidate that has caused controversy at every angle possible is none other than Donald Trump. Famous for his extreme affluence and most notably his TV drama, The Apprentice, President-elect Donald Trump has integrated his unctuous persona into his campaign. The San Diego Union Tribune’s article on Donald Trump, “…Great Power and Greater Irresponsibility”, introduces us with the possibility that Donald Trump is not the “Make America Great American” man he claims to be, and in fact he is the exact opposite. While for some Americans, his aversion to political correctness is admirable and induces a strong support; many are adverse to his social conduct and view his idiosyncrasies polar to the fabric of the Constitution. The article brings forth a target audience of both non-supporters and supporters alike in grave attempt to eradicate this supposed allure of Trump.
A black conservative, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, renowned globally for his groundbreaking surgery to separate the Siamese twins, is a former left-wing Democrat currently running for the Republican presidential election. His conservative stand on race relations in the United States has played a key role in his current surge to the top of Republican Party race. Ben Carson holds that all races are discriminated against while the quest to change race relations in the country is hinged on efforts by individuals and not large-scale institutional reforms (Rigueur, 2015). That is, successful fight against racism depends on self-sufficiency and a great measure of patriotism that appreciates capitalism
I agree; the article “Texas Bathroom Bill Has Emotions, and Stakes, Running High” doesn’t deal with the issue of intersectionality. In fact, this article focuses more on the politics and economic consequences of the Bathroom Bill than the emotional, or general, effects the bill has on the transgender community. The transgender community is only mentioned briefly when Serria Jane Davis and Alisa Miller gave their testimony. Intersectionality could have been addressed through, as you said, adding more diversity in the form of adding different age groups, races/ethnic groups, and people both supporting and belonging to the transgender community. It is understandable that this article does not deal with intersectionality since its main fouce is
The 2016 primary election has been the most intriguing in modern history, mainly due to one candidate; Donald J. Trump. Before he won the general election, President-elect Donald J. Trump won the Republican primary. Since the day he announced his candidacy by riding down an escalator in Trump Tower, pundits and politicians didn’t seriously believe he had a chance. As the debates were held and the primaries went on, it became apparent that he had an actual chance of winning the nomination. The Republican primary showed that there was an anger toward traditional politicians, an anger which Donald Trump tapped into. The rise of Trump also showed that the old rules of what was acceptable to say do not apply any more. These and other factors lead me to the conclusion that the Republican party lost control of the 2016 primary election and failed to choose its eventual nominee.
"I also came to realize that if people could make me angry, they could control me. Why should I give someone else that much power over my life?" (-Ben Carson) While Ben Carson is now an extraordinary influential figure in our society, he wasn't always appreciated. At one point, he had to of had struggles, and that's where Carson's childhood played a role. Once that was over Ben was on fire with his education and career, he also earned several awards for his achievements.
“GOP ‘wall of shame’ on display inside Trump campaign HQ” presents a rather objective report about Donald Trump and his “wall of shame” inside his headquarters. This wall contains pictures of each of the candidates that dropped out of the presidential race, including the dates each of the candidates left. Unlike other reports on presidential candidates, this author took a more objective report, leaving as much of his personal bias out of the article as he possibly could. However, the author did not have a selective approach when writing this article, because he went from talking about the “wall of shame,” to Donald Trump’s desire of Kasich to drop out of the race, to Donald
This article discusses why Donald Trump has risen to such high levels in his presidential campaign, even though he does not care about being politically correct. This article hypothesizes that Donald Trump has become so widely popular to due a backlash against political correctness. This is in part because Trump is viewed as someone who is not afraid to speak his mind and be honest, which is not a common trait found in many politicians. The author, Sarah Elizabeth Cupp, is a columnist for many news organizations, such as CNN, New York Daily News, and Field & Stream Magazine. Furthermore, she has been featured in the Washington Post, Politico, amongst others. Although this article originates from someone with a conservative bias, it is
The politic arena is a media circus (entertainment) because of the way the Donald Trump from the Republican Party has been behaving. Trump’s successes throughout the caucuses have been accomplished after a series of exchanging insults. Trump and Clinton, known for their disrespectful remarks, have turned the debates into a level of disrespect, questioning the future of America. The politic arena is no longer about politics and policies, but about who made the biggest comeback. The media has contributed to this circus attraction by giving these remarks the spotlight. By reflecting on the media, Trump has been able to target every audience through different tactics. These candidates say they want the best for America. However, their focus on competition has diminished the true meaning of becoming
Gender equality is a pressing issue in the United States. The definition of gender, and the rights that accompany them, is constantly being updated and adjusted. The LBGT community is fighting for equality after being repressed for many years. Because of this sudden movement, social issues are sparking outrage and debate on whether a certain law or right for LBGT people is to be initiated. In many instances, these issues dominate the media, and cause for chaos on both sides of the spectrum. The bathroom controversy exemplifies this. The LBGT community argues that anyone should be able to use whichever bathroom that matches with their identified gender. Members of the LBGT community should not be able to use whatever bathroom they please.
Last but not least the New Yorker article by John Cassidy “The Election May Be Over, But Trump’s Blow Up is Just Starting” talks about how Trump biggest support Fox News own Sean Hannity cancelled his interview with Donald Trump putting the biggest conservative news station in the world against Donald Trump. After the story aired Donald Trump was showed to behind Clinton by nine points based on a Bloomberg poll (Cassidy, 2016). Liberal platforms use this story to show how backward and sexist Donald Trump is. A trend that was shown in the New Yorker and the Washington Post articles that there is a divide in the Republican Party.
There are seven hopefuls who are likely going to formally announce their candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, within the next week and many more who are contemplating a run. None of them invoke an emotional, if not polarizing response quite like “The Donald.” It is early yet, but the only Republican hopeful who has broken from the reserved, almost polite rhetoric of the early stump speeches in Iowa and New Hampshire, and the government-as-usual policy discussions on the Sunday media carousel, has been Donald Trump. By removing the shackles of political correctness and “media-speak,” Mr. Trump tossed a few verbal hand grenades into the throng of Obama-friendly, group-think media sycophants, who were waiting
I chose to read the novel “One Nation” by Dr. Ben Carson .It showcases Ben Carson’s life and achievements. It also showcases his political and social views about the government. Dr. Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr. is a world renowned neurosurgeon. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Yale and earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree for Psychology (Benjamin Carson Biography par.17). He acquired a M.D. from the University of Michigan for neuroscience. Also, he completed his residency at John Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was employed at John Hopkins where he worked his way up to being the director of his department. He is known for the separation of conjoined twins. This took 22 hours and a team of over 70 people. Ben Carson has a wife and three sons. He met his wife while he is attending Yale (Benjamin Carson Biography par.22). He has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal. A few of the books that he has written include Think Big, One Nation, America the Beautiful, The Big Picture, and Take the Risk (Future President Ben Carson Wrote 6 Books. We Read Them So You Don 't Have To. Par.1-5) I believe that this book is informative especially since Dr. Ben Carson is running for President. I felt the book was extremely well written. It is very positive, but it also includes a few negative attributes.
