Bay Leaves and Cinnamon Sticks: Life is Some stories have a very good way of persuading a person to see life in a different way. Thelma B. Thompson gave a wonderful meaning in her book “Bay Leaves and Cinnamon Sticks: Life Is”. The theme for this novel would have to be morality. Millie tried to figure out what the right thing to do throughout the whole novel. She sees the wrong and does not proceed with the wrong full things. As she states when Jude told her he was in that selling drugs business “go turn yourself in”. Millie knows what is right and what is wrong. The author did a good job with how she produced this novel. In this novel there is a main character, her name is Millie. She was born in Jamaica. Millie received her visa and moved to New York to find better opportunities. She has four children. The girls live with her sister Imogene. The two boys live with their father’s relatives. She went to visit Jamaica, she landed at the airport and waited for her husband to show and he never did. She met this man named William Hope. He was a cab driver and he took her home. Later that night, she found out that her husband, Jude was seeing another woman. She came across this letter from Canada from the woman who Jude had been seeing. Millie was devastated. She was sending him money to build her house and there was no sign of the new house. The following day she went to find Omega, he is a person who helps various people in Jamaica. Omega gave her the advice she needed to
The theme during the whole story and plot may be to always watch your back but that can be determined by the reader. Miss Foster, the cheerleading coach, coax so many girls into the squad only to suck them of their youth and use for herself, Daisy has to end up having to confront the soul sucker and destroy her before she takes more lives of other girls. Daisy started out as a normal, shy girl, despite the family of psychics, she has to develop into a brave and admirable heroin to save the lives of her peers.
The theme of the story is under some circumstances people can be blind to the truth. Character Edie determines the style of the story by talking about the circumstances of her life as a fifteen year old girl and as an older woman. She retells the stories of those that she has known, and the man that she believed she loved deeply. Sometimes the things we want to happen may not be the things that life has for us. We need to be open to all the opportunities in life that are different from what we believe.
Throughout the story, motive and theme were used to make the story more intriguing. Motive was incorporated everytime the girl went to the grocery store, as she would go to look for the bag boy, clarifying why she acts the way she does. In the story, the author states, “ Each time she went to the store, her eyes scanned the checkouts at once, her heart in her mouth.”(Rylant), explaining how the girl was deeply in love with him and that he was on her mind 24/7, which gave her motivation not only to go grocery shopping, but to start liking Cincinnati and her new life. Theme is also shown in the story when the girl and boy hated themselves and each other because they were too scared to talk to one another, introducing
Which is in vast contrast of her transient lifestyle that she had elected prior to her heroic return to Fingerbone, the fictional setting for the duration of this novel. Painted as struggling township based around the simplistic things such as the train schedule. Another reminder of loss in this family’s life, reminding them of the loss of their grandfather,” …had a job with the railroad by the time he reached his stop” (Robinson 5). Furthermore, her nieces feel as though their grandmother failed to teach the ideas of love “She had never taught them to be kind to her.” (Robinson 19) This will resonate throughout this story as they continue to unfold different chambers within the elusive life of their impromptu mother, Aunt
I think the theme of this story is about deception, and it’s about how people can put you down and think nothing of it, but when someone is in the other person’s shoes they finally see what they have done to that person.
A minor theme could be how the government was corrupt back in those days. For instance, seeing how the judge had so much power, he could do whatever he wanted, also it could also be the relationship between parents and children. Even though Toby was the boy to work for them, the reasoning behind Ms. Lovett taking him in is because she honestly wanted a family. The relationship grows between these two individuals and it seems to be a mother and son relationship. In the end she had to choose between her son or the man she loved. The sacrifice was major either route she
Summary: Martha is a twelve year old living in the city with her mother, father, older brother and younger sister. It was summer and one day before they depart to the beach to visit her grandmother Martha received a strange visit. A new girl had died at her school a few weeks prior. The journal page also said that mentioned that Olive wanted to go to the ocean and that was just were Martha was about to go on vacation too. Lastly the journal page stetted that Olive thought Martha was the nicest girl in her class and she hoped they could become friends. All this was extremely odd for Martha and couldn’t figure out why Olive had thought she was so nice. Martha’s family was dysfunctional as most families are but Martha felt it was always much worse and she was stuck in the middle. The next day they arrived at her grandmothers house, everyone called her Godbee. Godbee was Marthas favorite person. Her and Godbee were close.

The theme of this fiction story is to not trust anyone. The narrator, tone, and style adds a lot to the presentation of that theme. This story was very captivating and interesting to read. This was because the use of suspense the author used and when it came about and the mystery involved. This is done through the style of the story. From the very beginning of the story Goodman Brown says goodbye to his wife because he is going on a journey through the night. This is the first thing that brings up questions about what is going on.
