Beast by Donna Jo Napoli, is an adventurous novel that tells a story of a man, who is also a beast, that faces many challenges. These challenges will allow him to return to his rightful being. This man’s name is Orasmyn, Prince of Persia. One mindless mistake during the Feast of Sacrifices results in Orasmyn being turned into a lion by a pari, also known as a fairy. In writing this exotic novel, Donna
Straying away from life as a whole only to be alone, some may say is the strong way to heal themselves when dealing with extreme grief or a major crisis . In the book Wild, twenty-two year old Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost it all. Dealing with the loss of her mother, her family torn to pieces, and her very own marriage was being destroyed right before her very eyes. Living life with nothing more to lose, lifeless, she made the most life changing decision of her life. Strayed never seems remorseful on her decisions to up and leave everything behind while deciding to flee from it all. This being her way of dealing with life, it shows her as being strong; a woman of great strength and character. She shows personal strength, which is
“The Devil in the Shape of a Woman” was an excellent book that focuses on the unjusts that have been done to women in the name of witchcraft in Salem, and many other areas as well. It goes over statistical data surrounding gender, property inherence, and the perceptions of women in colonial New England. Unlike the other studies of colonial witchcraft, this book examines it as a whole, other then the usual Salem outbreaks in the late 17th century.
This is the second book to a court of thorns and roses by Sarah J Maas, which I would highly recommend. The first book is a retelling of the fairy tale beauty and the beast. While the first one was amazing in my opinion, the second one was even better. If you haven't read the first one yet, you need to. And if you read the first, but not the second you need to. And if you haven’t read either one of them then you need to stop reading now and leave. I’m serious these books are amazing and you don’t want to be spoiled.
What goes around comes around. When sinners reach hell they are forced to experience the counter-suffering of contrapasso. For each sin, Dante gives a specific punishment relating to that sin. Some of these sins include violence towards self, violence towards God, sorcery, and hypocrisy. For the despicable lives they lived on earth, they are doomed to suffer relating consequences for all of eternity.
On Sunday, March 19th, 2017 my roommate and I attended Latin Fest in Upper Wege. The event featured delicious Latin-American dishes (such as empanadas and fajitas), speakers, and a performance by the award-winning poet Elizabeth Acevedo. Acevedo is a National Slam Champion and has performed at a variety of venues both nationally and internationally, including The Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, and South Africa’s State Theatre(Acevedo). She has also done a number of TED Talks(Acevedo). Acevedo is an Afro-Latino American from New York and she recently released a book call Beastgirl & Other Origin Myths. She began her performance with her rap-style poem titled Beastgirl. Acevedo’s poems are often a joining of the English and Spanish languages.
When having a conversation with someone it is easy to know how they are feeling by the tone in their voice. If a person is being funny, they tend to have a smile on their face, but when a person is angry about a particular subject, the tone of their voice becomes extremely loud and overbearing. While reading novels or short stories the characters tone is distinguishable because of the author's use of exclamation points or italicized words. These make the reader understand the characters emotions and feelings throughout the entire book. As for poems, the tone is not as recognizable. A reader is not capable of understanding the tone from just simply glancing at a few words. The tone is derived from several words and
My mama has been working on the renaissance clothes all week, and now we are in the car. Driving to the Renaissance Festival. My sister was wearing an auburn red dress with pretty patterns and frills all over her dress. My mama was wearing a royal green dress with necklaces and lace that covered her. Papa was wearing a simple lords siamese, trousers, vest, cloak, and hat. While I wore a royal blue dress matched with a beautiful necklace, and my hair done on intricate braids as ribbons were also going through my hair.
At the start of the poem we find Dante in the dark forest(Inf. 1.2). Not much description is given maybe to show Dante’s disorientation. Whether the disorientation is spiritual, physical, moral or political; that is unclear at the start of the poem. The poem us written this way so reader can identify with Dante. It is also written in such a way that sometimes it is difficult to understand some parts, you sometimes have to read it backwards to get a better understanding.
Picture a child sitting in front of a television watching the Wizard of Oz. To them, it is an assortment of magical beings, a land filled with wonderful places, with varieties of different colors. They do not picture it as something with far more meaning than just a plain fairytale. On the other hand, gender/feminist critics have been able to analyze the Wizard of Oz as well as Wicked, in order to find a more elaborate meaning behind the story itself. They have discussed what lies behind the story when it comes to the issue of sexism and masculinity towards the book itself as well as the characters. There are many concepts as well that help to further explain feminism and gender criticism. The four concepts that will be discussed
In 1740, Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot De Villeneuve wrote the first official version of the fairytale, “Beauty and the Beast”, which was translated from her original French title “La Belle et la Beta”. In reality, Villeneuve’s version is the original fairytale, although, many people believe that either Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont’s version would be the authentic one, and others that also believe that there had been similar versions prior to Villeneuve’s writing. “Beauty and the Beast” is a short fairytale about a prince who is given a curse that turned him into a Beast because of how he had rejected an old, unattractive fairy’s proposal to marry her. She then was so furious towards the rejection that she set that curse on him. Then, in the fairytale, there is a girl, Beauty, who happens to be the youngest daughter of a merchant who is set to give up his life after he had pulled a rose from the Beast’s garden to deliver to Beauty, but instead Beauty decided to take his place and she was set to live the rest of her life in the castle with the Beast. After some time, Beauty agrees to marry the Beast which then causes the curse to no longer exist, turning him back into prince he used to be. This fairytale has also been turned into a film a few times, the most famously know is the 1991 Disney animated version that was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, starring Paige O’Hara, as Belle (Beauty), and Robby Benson, as the Beast. In both the 1991 film by Trousdale and the original fairytale story by Villeneuve, there are a few differences from the meaning of the rose, to characters being added or taken away, to the actual spell that is cursed on the prince. Villeneuve uses personification, love, and feministic traits to demonstrate how Beauty chose to stay with the Beast on her own recognizance.
Referring back to fairytales like Beauty and the Beast film which involves the beast who magically got turned into a beast as a disciplining act because of his selfishness. Then a beautiful young women by the name of Belle, got imprisoned in the castle. The beast is very fond of Belle since he first laid eyes on her. During the movie Belle being the catalyst for the Beast’s need of wanting to change. But he distances himself from her because he has two mindsets. Which is a man and the other is a raging beast. The beast is going through trying to
Márquez uses the character of Angela Vicario to show the power women can possess over the men in their lives. Angela Vicario is arguably the most powerful character in the novel, as she is the one who tells her brothers that it was Santiago who took her virginity, which consequently sets the entire plot of the story in motion. After Angela is returned by Bayardo San Román to her family due to the fact that she is not a virgin, when her brothers ask who it was who took her virginity, Angela “nailed [Santiago’s name] to the wall with her well-aimed dart, like a butterfly with no will whose sentence has always been written” (Márquez 47). The way in which Angela searches for Santiago’s name shows that it may not have been Santiago who had taken
Believe it or not everyone still has that little kid inside them that never grew up. It’s those times when you want to have fun and enjoy life as an adult. In other words, to just forget all the worries and do something adventurous. Sometimes people like to refer it as “Releasing the wild child”. Above I had chosen this particular quotation because I strongly felt that it had shown the happiness of appreciating the little things in life. Clearly, Sparky is just overfilled with excitement from being able to step outside for the very first time into the sunlight again. From being trapped so long in that dark and cold bomb shelter, I guess anybody would be glad to flee from that barbarous environment. However unlike many, Sparky didn’t worry
There are many different versions of Beauty and the Beast; It is a magical story of unconditional love. It teaches children that beauty is much more then skin deep. In this assignment I am to compare two, Beauty and the Beast stories; one by the renowned, famous Grimm Brothers as presented by Disney. The other called Beastly by the modern author Alex Flinn. The two versions have many similarities but still quite a few differences.
