I stand in front of the canvas, the war in my mind raging on as the new Beatles song “Strawberry Fields Forever” plays softly on the radio in my studio. I need to do something bold, something beautifully tragic, something to show them how I truly feel about the war that’s raging outside of the borders of my mind. Even outside to borders of my country: America. It suddenly hits me, “I think, er, no, I mean, yes, but it’s all wrong. That is I think I disagree.” My eyes widen as if I’ve found the cure for all bad things in the world as I run to my kitchen. A bowl of strawberries: Check A mixing bowl: Check A plastic knives: Check I rush back to my canvas, fearing the idea might leave me if I don’t hurry up and do it. I watch as the juice from the single strawberry glides down the paper, like blood spilling from a soldier. I’m so pleased with how it turned out that I make a whole field of dead strawberry bodies, using as many knives as I have until I’ve sporadically covered the canvas. I take one small paintbrush and use the liquid in the crushed bowl to start painting designs of explosions and guns.
