“Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier is a personal narrative of the challenges that adolescents face with coming of age. The author is able to accurately capture the voice of her younger self-using literary devices such as imagery, juxtaposition, and diction. The author uses these literary devices to give the reader a precise representation of the struggles she surpassed, which pushed her towards adulthood.
Living in poverty and having to face one’s crumbling society is extremely stressful. In Eugenia Collier’s short story, “Marigolds,” the main character, Lizabeth, and the other citizens of the town she lives in, including her parents, her friends, and Miss Lottie, must learn to cope with that stress, and in Lizabeth’s case, learn how to deal with the effects of maturation. The different types of conflict within “Marigolds” are man versus man, man versus society, and man versus self because Lizabeth has to face peer pressure, the living conditions brought by the Great Depression, as well as the development of her own emotions.
In Czeslaw Milosz poem, “Ars Poetica?”, he reveals to the reader his opinion on the art of poetry. However, instead of praising the art form or the beauty of constructing an overall poem, he critical evaluates his dislike for its limited and depressing state. One of my favorite poems is People by Yevgeny Yevtushenko. It explores the devastating nature of what it means to be human and the tragedy that, “Not people die but worlds die in them.” I have always been deeply moved by the poem’s sentiment. However, by examining People through the lens of iconicity and also with Michael Burke’s Iconicity and Literary Emotion in mind, I gained a deeper understanding of how Yevtushenko employs iconic devices to underscore and bolster his poem’s emotional effect. In particular, this essay will provide the reader with a closer look at the factors that influence the communicative power of language used in the novel. At the same time, the consequences of their presence will be discussed in detail throughout the whole paper.
This commentary will explore the use of vocabulary, punctuation and imagery by Milan Kundera in an extract of the novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being . The passage to be analysed is located in the fourth part of the book named “Soul and Body”. It portrays a scene where one of the main characters, Tereza, is in front of a mirror and finds herself dealing with the conflict between identity and image. Her disconformities with her body act as a trigger for this questioning to arise and bring back memories from her childhood. The entire passage is structured in three sections: one where she criticises her body, another where queries arise from these observations and finally one where she demonstrates her definite opinion on the situation.

The main aim of the researcher is to analyse the different types of images used by the poet and how it helps the reader to understand the theme of the poems. There are seven distinct types of imagery which are catergorised as visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, kinesthetic and organic. Visual images appeal to the sense of sight. Auditory images appeal to specific sound whereas olfactory image is used to describe particular scent. Gustatory image pertains to the sense of taste whereas tactile is used to describe the sense of touch. Kinesthetic images deal with movement or action. Organic deals with creating a specific feeling or emotion within the reader. Adcock’s poems Tadpoles and For Heidi with Blue Hair are taken for analysis to analyse theme through images. In these poems Fleur Adcock has used different images in order to achieve the poetic effect.
