Becoming A Registered Nurse Essay

Are you interested in being a Registered Nurse? To become a Registered Nurse also known as RN it requires education, skills, and interest. For instance, an RN must be able to detect changes in symptoms, health, or pain. Furthermore, a Registered Nurse should have critical thinking skills, communication skills, and organization skills. Anyways, three colleges in San Diego are San Diego State University, School of Nursing, and San Diego City college. An RN that is more experienced has the potential for raises or promotions than a new RN. Every RN is paid differently based on their experience/education. Therefore, RN's handle plenty of tasks and the majority of the registered nurses have a different education so each gets paid different amounts.

Another thing that draws me towards the career is the flexibility. A nurse is able to obtain a job in almost any state as long as they get the correct license for the state. Also, they are able to work in many different settings. A nurse can work in an office setting where the hours are set and they work a normal eight to five job. They are also able to work in a hospital setting, the hours differ when working at a hospital and some are required to work weekends and holidays. The physical demands for both setting would be different. Hospital settings would require lots of walking from room to room as well as running in certain emergency settings. In either setting though a nurse is required to be on their feet for long periods of time. It is not a job to where you would be stuck behind a desk.

An RN will usually records what the patient is doing, sometimes work with medical machinery, talk to doctors about the patient, and help the patient and the patient’s family on how to deal with their medical problems (“Registered Nurses” U.S. para. 8). Another important thing that an RN will need is to have the physical stamina and to be ready to lift or transfer patients (“Registered Nurses” U.S. para. 49). An RN will have to be able to lift at least 10 pounds, maybe even 20 pounds (“Registered Nurse” para. 4). A person in this career should have an energy level that is somewhat high, has a skill that is interpersonal, and a knowledge that is a little scientific (“Career” para. 6). If you happen to be an RN in a nursing home, an RN will watch over the LPN’s and CNA’s, may start fluids for the patient, make plans for treatments, and manage the patients health

Some other traits include having good communication skills, being emotionally stable, good physical endurance, and diligence. Since nursing consists of talking a lot, ones communication skills should be very well. They must be able to understand what patients are saying, what orders are given by the doctors, and how to successfully chart ones activity. An important trait is being able to be emotionally stable. It is crucial in order to survive all the ups and downs of emotions nurses must experience. For instance, if one has become good friends with a patient and they pass away. It would be hard, but they would need to pull through and put their job first. For nurses to succeed, they should have good physical endurance. Nurses have very few breaks and they are on their feet all day. Being a nurse means having diligence and a positive work ethic. One needs to have a constant and earnest effort to accomplish what

People around the world would not be cared for, educated, and have emotional support during their injuries and their family member's injuries, if it was not for Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses need to genuinely have people skills in order to care for patients and their families. Registered Nurses need to educate people on health care and how to take care of themselves during injuries. The amount of RN's has been growing at a percentage of 19%, which is faster than average ("Registered Nurses: Occupational Outlook Handbook"). This is excellent because there are more Registered Nurses, therefore, there are more patients being cared for. Being a Registered Nurse requires an associates degree, specific qualities such as people skills and sympathy, and knowledge about medical care to be able to do the duties.

After persuing your career as a Registered Nurse, dramatic changes will be very noticable in your life. You will find yourself doing things you'd never thought you'd do, and also seeing a variety of things you never imagined seeing. Being in the career path as such, can bring on a healthier, yet less stressful lifestyle. Becoming a Registered Nurse would be a life changer. Some ways becoming a Registered Nurse would impact my life are the good pay and benfits, having the ability to save others lives, and also being able to motivate younger kids and teenagers to persue their dream in becoming a RN.

Language and behavior. In any profession, there is specific language that goes along with it. A nurse’s terminology is made up of mostly medical terms that are a person’s anatomy and physiological make up, medications, diseases, procedures etc. To be an effective communicator in this profession being up to date on medical terminology is a must. This is called the standardized language of medicine. “When everyone understands what a condition, medicine, or procedure is, they are able to fulfill their roles accordingly, whether that is delivering medicine or billing for a medicine” (PCC Institute of Health Professionals, 2017). Along with language expectations, there are ways a nurse is expected to carry themselves. Patients expect their nurses to be compassionate, keep them informed, and have good bedside manner. One of the skills is flexibility. You have to be able to work longer shifts or shorter shifts. Also you need to be able to work in the morning and or night. Paying attention to detail is another skill. To be a RN you need to pay attention to the little things because if not, you can change someone’s life. Communication is one of the keys to being a registered nurse. If the patients are worried, you have to have good communication to calm them down so they do not feel any discomfort.

My number one reason for making the transition from a Licensed Practical Nurse to a Register Nurse is because I want to be able to explore other job opportunities. I currently, and have only ever worked in Long Term Health Care. I love my job and the people I take care of but, I am wanting to explore other options and get away from the monotony of being in long term care. I would really like to try and pursue a career in Emergency Medicine as a nurse. To do that I need the extra skills and knowledge that a Registered Nurse has.

Nurses have to be prepared to react rapidly to emergencies and different circumstances that emerge. Often, health care work is just the reaction to sudden occurrences, and nurses should dependably be set up for the unforeseen. Remaining on their feet, keeping their head cool in a crisis, and a calm attitude are incredible qualities in a nurse. Respect goes a long way. Nurses respect people and rules.

Compassion, Dedication, Responsibility, Empathy these are just some of the many things nurses should have when caring for a patient. I have had the opportunity to provide service at St. Elizabeth’s hospital. I worked with St. Elizabeth Hospital Patient Portal Program; I would go from room to room and ask each patient if he/she would like to set up their patient portal where they have the option to see their test results and all their medical history on an online database. Many thought this was an excellent idea. You would enter a patients room and see that their not in the best condition. Going in a patient’s room can be scary at times however, going into a situation confident that you maybe unsure about is the best thing you can do. After

So other important skills to have are communication, organization, and critical-thinking. After learning all this information I find my encourage about my choice of wanting to become a RN. Yet I am considering that I might like to go on and possibly become a nurse anesthetist or nurse practitioner. I just love how many options I have for my future and that I am able to switch if I want to do something new.

Working well with people is an important factor in the nursing career; a nurse must always be respectful to every patient regardless of the situation. Persuasion sometimes has to be used because a patient may not want a certain medication so a nurse must help the person understand that it is what is best for him or her health and their track to recovery. A nurse must always pay close attention to their patients because if problems or concerns come up, a nurse must be the first to notice it.

To actually care for and about somebody is key to nursing. A patient once told me, “You don’t know how good it feels to be showed that you are a person and not just a job. If you can care and keep smiling everyday you’ll be a great nurse.” This is what I believe in. I want to be the nurse who can make a client happy and trusting.

Nurses are known as the heart of health care. Being a nurse is a demanding job that requires commitment, but does not lack rewards. A fact stated by the American Association of Colleges of Nurses claims that “Nurses comprise the largest single component of hospital staff, are the primary providers of hospital patient care, and deliver most of the nation 's long-term care” (“Nursing Fact Sheet”). With many roles throughout the healthcare system as a whole, nurses are a large, very important role that interacts with every other part of the health care system. They have great qualities that not everyone has. They are highly compassionate, caring, professional, diligent and understanding individuals. A nurse experiences people at their worst and still care for patients in a way that no one else would. All these honest points prove that nurses are the most important members of the health care system because, nurses spend the most time with patients, nurses are the managers of patient care; they are teachers and are great with conflict resolution.
