As I sit here and think about this past semester the one thing that keeps running through my head is, how did it go by so fast? I remember sitting in EDU for the very first time on that first day of classes, excited for all that this year had to offer me. And so far, my experiences have lived up to my expectations. Throughout these past 15 weeks, a lot has changed. I went from living at home to living in a dorm, and from having a very consistent sleep schedule to staying up way too late and waking up far too early. But amongst all the change in my life one thing has stayed constant, my unwavering desire to become a teacher. In my education class I took last year, we focused on a lot of the practical parts of becoming a teacher. We made plenty of lesson plans, discussed the steps to becoming a teacher and the exciting topic of teacher pay. Which all excited me, especially lesson planning as I had never made a lesson plan before that class. But this year, we hardly even talked about lessons at all, instead we focused on more on ourselves, and our motivations to teach. Countless times this semester I was asked to find my “Why”, and this was actually a challenge for me. I knew my reason for choosing this path, but I had to dig deeper within myself to find out what my center was. Now when people ask me why I want to become a teacher, it 's not only because I can’t wait to create my own lessons plans, or decorate my own classrooms. Because while those are still valid
In the beginning, I was not completely sure if this was what I wanted to do in life, but over time I became more confident in this grand goal and more confident in myself. Each course would teach me something new about education and about me personally. I am thankful for every educator who helped me along the way and showed me that I am not wasting my time with these classes and with this profession as a whole. My target is in sight and with a little more work, I will be making a change like I always dreamed. Every course I complete is another piece of a dignified puzzle and I am proud of the pieces I have gathered so
Many people wonder if teachers should or should not get paid more than they do. A lot of people believe that teachers should get paid more, but there are some that do not. Parents that want their kids to have a good education want teachers to get paid more. For example, P.V Derkachev said, “… teacher pay influences the quality of education.” (Derkachev 574). Teachers that get payed more would be more likely to perform better at their job and not mind the extra time that they have to do stuff outside of work to get everything done. Matt Barnum said, “Higher salaries --- even small bonuses ---- can and do keep some teachers in the classroom, and likely improve outcomes for their students.” (Barnum). The student is going to get taught better if teachers get paid more because the teacher will want to teach at the best of her ability which will help the student.
Even though I volunteered in different schools, I never had the opportunity to ask about the real feelings of a teacher. During the interview, I learned that there is more than just teaching in becoming a teacher. This is because she told me how one of her hesitation on becoming a teacher is the time one dedicates for the job. She told me that when one is teacher, one must prepare lesson plans, come to school early to prepare for the day, and even stay longer to grade papers. She said that her typical day starts at 7:30 am to prepare materials and school instruction starts from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Then, even though the class ends already, she needs to create lesson plans for the entire week. She said that all these things are part of a teacher’s job, but they do not get paid to do these things. Therefore, I learned that being a teacher is not easy because there are a lot of extra responsibilities beyond the job description and that being a teacher extend beyond the classroom. Additionally, her answer made me reflect on whether I want a job, where I have to work more than the “work hours.” However, despite this workload, what amazes me was when she said that if she could go back, she would still choose to be a teacher because of her passion to make a difference in the lives of the
Aside from all I've said I must explain one of my personal beliefs, principle, moral value, or however you'd like to view it as before I start explaining myself. feel it’s not necessary to focus on yourself but rather what you can do for others which is why I fell in love with teaching. In my later years of High School I was given the opportunity to assist in teaching many of the choral classes at Colby. Since I had taught myself the piano around age nine I had grown in my piano skills which helped in assisting in the classroom. I first started with just warming up the classes but then into my Junior and
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve known what I wanted to do. I am one of those people who was blessed enough to realize my passion at an early age. As far back as I can remember, I’ve wanted to become a teacher. I can remember as a child sitting in my room, surrounded by my stuffed animals (or students, as I saw them) and forcing my younger brother to sit still and quietly do the work I assigned him. I even had two baskets which I kept on my little wooden desk; one for my “students” to turn in work, and the other for more work which needed to be graded. I spent many afternoons
High school teachers’ average salary varies across the world. The United States is said to be one of the richest countries in the world, yet our teachers are being paid one of the lowest amounts. The Education Intelligence Agency, author of the article “Ohio Teacher Overcomes Union’s Tolerance” published an International Teacher Salary Report ranking the fifty states by “how much the average salary exceeded per capita personal income.” According to the Education Intelligence Agency Ohio’s percentage rate is only fifty- five point one percent. According to the Education Intelligence Agency the lowest state percentage is in South Dakota at twenty- three point six percent and the highest state percentage is
This semester has felt how Joan Didion describes her time in New York City in Goodbye to All That, “how six months can become eight years with the deceptive ease of a film dissolve” (Didion). The semester has flown by. It is something I have come to call “the time-warp of college,” when days become weeks and last week felt like four weeks ago, but four weeks ago felt like yesterday. In my opinion, it is a beautiful phenomenon. On the surface I am still the same person I was in August, but internally I am different. Not a bad different, but an improved different. It is like when Apple released the iPhone 7 and you did not know how it is different from the iPhone 6. The differences are small technical things that are only significant to a select
The teacher wage in America has caused quite the controversy recently, and the talks are not positive. Many scholars, administrators, and teachers themselves bring to light opinions on an issue that one could say has gone dark in America, meaning not much change has occurred. As late as 2015, teachers have protested their wage all the way from proposals to walkouts. Many scholars have researched the subject, coming to many conclusions. Maybe teacher pay reflects quality of the teaching? Possibly student grades are affected, and maybe the correlation between pay and job satisfaction reflect on the learning experience. Conclusions found through my own research do follow
Have you ever wondered how it would be if teachers got paid due to how students learn? Well, I think they should be paid due to how much students learn. I am sure everyone will have their own opinion, but my opinion is that they should get paid. This is the question I am wondering and I really want to know how it would be. This is my opinion on the topic and I have many reasons why teachers should get paid. I hope you agree with what I wrote and also I hope you agree with my reasons too. They will not be the same reason but I think these reasons make sense to my topic.
When I first began teaching over twenty years ago, I do not believe I had a clear idea of what my vision of education was. I was hungry for knowledge myself and took every opportunity I could to attend professional development and implement new curriculum and instructional strategies. During the early part of my career as a teacher, I developed a
My decision to be a teacher did not come easily to me. This choice was dependent on a reflection about what I was passionate about and how I could make a difference. I have chosen to become a teacher, as I believe teachers have the ability to provide future generations the stimulation for one of the most significant roles in life; to become a lifelong learner. Many teachers that I have had during my education have had a positive impact on my decision to grow and develop the skills that are fundamental to pursue a successful teaching career. My aim is to be a part of an honorable profession with the optimism that one day I will become an efficacious teacher who can provide future teachers with inspiration, as my teachers have provided for me. Through personal educational experiences and peer-reviewed academic literature, I am able to shape my approach to my pre-service teaching, as it will influence my future practice. As a teacher, there is not just one singular approach to educating students; there is a need for flexibility, diversity, adaptation and reflection.
Would it be a good idea if teachers get paid more than usual? For the most part
Valerie Strauss wrote “Think teachers aren’t paid enough? It’s worse than you think,” this was an article posted The Washington Post. Valerie Strauss had a great deal of information about teachers and their pay. This article was written in August of 2016. I do believe that this article had the correct and up to date information about teacher pay and wages. This author compared teachers’ pay to comparable public workers. Valerie Strauss gave the impression that she wanted to inform her readers about how underpaid teachers are. I do think this article was convincing, Valerie Strauss knew what she was talking about.
What is your why? This question is a question many educators have to ask themselves as they navigate through the educational systems. Educators have to find their purpose for the field and push themselves forward with their passions and beliefs with their personal philosophies of education. According to Charles Silberman, “mindlessness” is the failure to think seriously about educational purpose, and the reluctance to question established practices (Elias & Merriam, 2005). Silberman states if “mindlessness” is the true problem with educational practices the whole educational system should be evaluated to look at the purpose of the educational systems (Elias & Merriam, 2005). Furthermore, educators must begin to use various forms of educational practices to find the purpose and how to connect with students. For example, we cannot fear failure as educators. Developing new concepts requires there to be different levels thinkers. The solution of the mindlessness according to Silberman, “must lie in infusing the various educating institutions with purpose” (Elias & Merriam, 2005). The purpose Silberman is describing allows institutions to inform educators to think critically about the end goal. The content, technique and delivery of instructions to students are vital to students’ academic success. And as educational systems
Having just completed writing my paper, I was able to see where my strengths and weaknesses are. Having to write a paper on an argument, I struggled trying to come up with what to write about. Making a valid argument in academic writing is different than that of just making an argument. In a person’s academic argument, the writer should not only show his/her own beliefs, but they need to also show there opposing views. While this may seem easy, it can prove to be difficult because as a writer, they are not allowed to attack a person or group, or the essay can become invalid to the readers. Deciding to stick with writing my topics on teachers, I decided to write an essay on how they are underpaid. This topic not only explores why teachers are underpaid, but it also shows how teachers are viewed.
