Eight years is a long time to go to school to be an equine veterinarian, but it offers a lifetime of saving horses. True one has to go to a college or university for eight plus years to become an equine veterinarian, but it all pays off in the end. It does not pay in money, but knowing that one saves a horses life, or can make their life better. This is what Charlie Scoggin was trying to say when he said “In my opinion, a salary should not be the sole means for deciding upon a job. You have to look at the big picture.” (Charlie Scoggin Resident veterinarian Rood and Riddle equine hospital). Equine veterinary medicine is not just about making money, but helping horses heal, recover, and live a better
Veterinarians must hold a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine, pass a national licensing examination and meet any other state-specific requirements for licensing or certification. They must complete and participate in a four year Doctor of Medicine (DMV) program. Some of the courses that are in the DMV program are; Animal behavior, Veterinary pharmacology, Animal Nutrition, Clinical Pathology, Large and Small animal medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Anesthetic and Surgery principles. Veterinarians in training will usually complete rotations of Cardiology, Dentistry, Oncology, and or Equine care. Some of the courses that will prepare them for veterinary school is; Microbiology, Animal Management, Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Nutrition, and Equine Care if I plan to go into the field of equines. To get my veterinary license I must complete a 360 question test, which usually takes about 7.5 hours (Erickson 1). Some states will require other things along with this test. Education is probably one of the toughest parts of being a veterinarian. The schooling and certification takes a great deal of time, which means I must be ready and realize that I will have a lot of schooling to pay off. I must also have dedication to be able to complete all of these necessary things (Veterinarian Education Requirements and Career Info 1). Along with all of those necessary
To become a vet tech you have to go through the proper education and training required. An associate’s degree in veterinary technology is required to become a vet tech and takes about two years to accomplish (Exploring Medical
A lot of the work performed by vets are treatment of the animals. So if they are sick, they will give them a checkup, test blood and maybe even do and x-ray. They also give advice to owners about breeding and care taking of the animal. Some vets may specialize in the care and treatment of either large or small animals. Small-animal vets will deal mostly with household pets, such as dogs, cats, birds, rodents, and reptiles. Usually they will work in cities and the owners have to bring their animals to them in their clinics.
Becoming a veterinarian is my first career choice. It requires that you take a highly competitive veterinary program, as well as years of studying once you do. First off you have to graduate high school then go to a college. Veterinary schools are located in Colorado, Kansas, Texas, California, etc. It takes four years to get an undergraduate degree and then you take the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination to practice in the United States.
There are two levels of education for entry into this occupation. A 4-year program for veterinary technologist, and a 2-year program for veterinary technician. Both need to pass a credentialing exam to be licensed, certified, or registered depending on the state. Also it is recommended that in highschool you take biology, math, and science classes. Both veterinary technologists and technician typically work in private clinics and hospitals. Sometimes in laboratories, humane societies and universities. There is a higher rate of illnesses than the national rate, this being because workers could could get bitten, scratched, or kicked. This happens because of dealing with aggressive or scared animals. Many clinics are open 24 hours so with that being said some will have to work holidays or weekends. The clinic that I am interning at they are not open 24 hours, they are open from 8-5 Monday through Friday.
To become a veterinarian one must have a doctrine degree in veterinary medicine, and that could take up to nine plus years. A person seeking to become a veterinarian usually takes the route of attending undergraduate school which takes four plus years, veterinary school which takes four years, and a year of interning. Not all take that route because it is sometimes possible to accepted to a college without a bachelor’s degree. If becoming a veterinarian is what someone wants to peruse in their life; it is best to start ones journey in high school. Taking the necessary classes in high school could be life changing whenever a person reaches college.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, veterinary technicians working on a full-time basis experience higher rates of work-related illnesses and injuries. They also often work in a noisy environment. The occupation is not only physically but also emotionally demanding.”
After high school, I must complete two-four years of pre veterinary or science studies. Then, I am able to apply for veterinary school. After I apply and get in, it takes four years to get a DVM degree. Depending on what job I want in the vet world, I could take a 1-2 year internship program if I wanted to specialize in one specific area or I could complete a 3-4 year residency program to become a certified specialist. There are plenty of skills that I will need to have to become a vet.
Veterinarians have various tasks that they must do in their job. The first task is that they care for and treat sick or injured animals (Veterinarian). They also inform owners of what is needed for their pet to keep them as healthy as they
Most veterinarians work in private clinics and hospitals. Some work in laboratories, classrooms, or work for the government (“Veterinarian”. U.S.). Some vets travel to farms or ranches and work in all kinds of weather. Veterinarians work long hours, sometimes 50 or more a week. When they just start, practice usually takes longer hours. Some vets even work on weekends. If they work with larger animals, they work longer hours than if you work with smaller animals (“Veterinarian” Encyclopedia 680).
There are many duties of being a veterinarian. Vets treat sick and injured animals. They also euthanize very old or sick animals. This way, animals can die in a relatively pain-free way. Preventive medical care is provied. They vaccinate and provide check-ups to make sure animals stay healthy. Vets give owners advice about animal care and breeding. Like doctors, vets may focus on a one area of medicine. Before becoming a veterinarian, a specific education is needed (“Veterinarian”).
The Amount of money you make depends on how much experience you have in the work area. “Earnings for veterinarians depend on experience, responsibilities, location, and employer” (John). When getting in to the work force of a veterinarian the amount of money you earn depends on what you can and cannot do. If you do not know as much as everyone else that just started out then you do not make as much money. Going to school and learning as much as you can then you can make a bunch of money. If at first school does not help you then keep on going at it and you can learn more then you ever thought you would. There is nothing wrong with needing more help when it comes to school if it helps you later in life to make more money. When first going in you can make $74,820 annually, median wage $96,260 and experienced wage is $123,500. The more you know the better chance of making more money. The amount of money you make depend on the amount of experience.
Veterinarians in private clinical practice work to prevent disease and other health problems in their patients. They examine animals, vaccinate them, prevent the transmission of animal disease to humans, and advise owners on how to keep their animals healthy and happy.
There are education and experience requirements to start a career as a veterinarian. Most veterinarians complete around four years of undergraduate education and receive a bachelor’s degree before applying to a DVM program. Undergraduate courses taken should heavily emphasize focus on biological and physical sciences. Other studies that can be beneficial to a veterinarian’s career are communication, humanities, mathematics, and social science. A veterinarian must graduate from a veterinary school with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or a Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree. Even though getting a bachelor’s degree is not a requirement, it can highly increase the chances of acceptance. It is often the best choice to earn your bachelor’s degree because of extremely competitive admission rates with DVM programs. Nonetheless, all DVM programs still require
