The significance of the book Of Beetles and Angels.
There are many ways to interpret this but I think the title is referring to a way of living. Haileab has always taught his children to accept people no matter what their situation is. Because of this many people have came into their lives and significantly made a difference on the way they view certain subjects in american culture.
Another reason is in some ways Mawi and his family are beetles. Sponsor families accepted them and taught them the way of living in America. In many ways the sponsor families are living by the quote, “treat all people-even the most unsightly beetles-as though they were angels sent from heaven” stated by Mawi Asgedom. In the short story, “The Moths”, the narrator, a fourteen year old girl, assumes the responsibility of taking care of her cancerous and dying Abuelita. Her Abuelita is the only person who understands the narrator and the only person she feels she can turn to. After having followed man’s rules for so many years, Abuelita passes away. Glenn Irwin’s “Two Butterflies” demonstrates a movement in age and development of experience through the images of two distinct butterflies. The ideas Irwin articulates about age and experience with this imagery also serve to show the disconnect between nature and civilization over time. The poem is divided into two stanzas: morning and evening. Likewise, there are two butterflies: morning and evening. The morning butterfly has only just completed his transition stage. He is faced with the beginning of life and the task to make a connection to civilization. The evening butterfly is well into her final life stage. She has gone through the experiences the morning butterfly has not; her connection with civilization has been previously established.
