Dr. Jean Watson said, “Nurses are a unique kind. They have this insatiable need to care for others, which is both their biggest strength and fatal flaw.”(nurseslabs.com). RNs hold about 2.4 million jobs in the US. They are also the most well-known of the various types of nurses. In order to understand what a Registered Nurse does, it is important to look at the job description, classes one needs to take, and salary/job demand.
Nursing can be physically and emotionally demanding (Siklos 278). Nurses provide care and assistance for people who are ill, injured, or suffering from health problems (Siklos 278). They instruct patients and their families on how to continue the care at home following a hospital stay (“Registered Nurse” 1). Many RNs provide direct patient care, but their work can also include other duties (“Nurse” 1). Most nurses begin work with the general adult population (Siklos 279). Nurses who are employed in doctors offices or clinics work along with the physicians to care for patients (“Registered Nurse” 1). Nurses need to be present in an orderly and neat appearance (“Registered Nurse” 2). They should have strong organization skills (“Registered Nurse” 2). There are 2,824,641 Registered Nurses in the US. The nursing field is the largest of all healthcare occupations, and employment prospects for nurses are excellent. RNs hold about 2.4 million jobs in the United States (Likoff 254). There are approximately 674 bachelors degree programs in nursing in the U.S (Likoff 256). Nurses can also be licensed by more than one state (Likoff 256). My goals are to graduate after getting a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), and go to Wichita State University.
