For the past 16 years Holly has had a very diverse experience working with clients who struggle with substance abuse, mental health, medical issues, and more. She provides individual and family therapy and loves what she does. Holly knew she wanted to be a social worker from a young age. In high school she was in a serious relationship with a classmate who had medical issues. Together they saw a medical social worker to help them maintain their relationship through the tough moments. Holly loved what the medical social worker did for them. The social worker helped her through some of her darkest days so she knew that she wanted to do the same for others. She was inspired and felt called to the social work profession. After receiving her MSW, Holly began working as a medical social worker at Yale New Haven Hospital in the emergency department. She did this for 13 years until she was offered a job as a school social worker at the Educational Center for the Arts in Hamden, Connecticut. She currently works there part time while running her own private practice. Having her own private practice has always been a professional aspiration of hers. A typical day in her position involves meeting with special needs children ages 14 through 20 months and their families. These children have physical and
At my first observation, I shadowed Doctor Lindsay Matthews who was a social worker in the emergency room department of the hospital. As a pre-medicine student, I had never considered a social worker as an important job in the hospital. I did not even know we had one. When I thought of social workers, I thought of people who dealt with kids and people with
For this assignment, I decided to interview my aunt because she has been a social worker for about thirty years, and has a lot of experience. She attended Dominican college in Orangeburg, New York where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She then went to graduate school at Montclair State in New Jersey where she received her master’s in psychology. After this, she decided to go back to school for her MSW, which she received from SUNY Albany. Since she graduated, the only profession she has worked in is social work, and she is now a licensed clinical social worker. She loves what she does and is glad that she made the decision to become a social worker.
The first eight years of her career were spent at West Alabama Health Services where she was introduced to the health care world and increased her desire to reach out and help more people.
While as a Candy Striper at Memorial Regional Hospital, she developed an interest in Social Work from a health perspective but her main interest began when she read a book “Black like me” which was about a white male who was interested in race relations in the country where he would take drugs to make his skin darker and travel to different areas to try to experience what a black male would experience. Because of this, she chose to be in the Social Work Program.
As she got older, she grew a passion of wanting to help teachers help their students. Like many others, her past experiences grew her to have a heart for others and a joyous spirit to want to help others live a prosperous life.
When interviewing Belle, I first asked her what made her decide to go into the field of social work. Belle responded informing me that she grew up in a very poor family and always felt that her teachers were her social workers. She revealed to me that some days she did not know where her next meal would come from, her family did not have running water in their house, and would her and her siblings would often have to wear dirty clothes. She explained that her teachers always supported her by

Bernadette Carroll is a license social worker, she currently have a BSW, MSW, LSCWS and she is currently working on her doctorate of social work at Capella University. She has been a social worker for 10 years where she have been helping her clients the best way she can. She also worked as a Child Protective social worker where she investigate and supervise situations with abuse and neglect of children. The aspect of Bernadette’s field of practice that seems more attractive to me is the fact that while on her journey, she tried to make connections with people and exploring options in order to do what she wanted to do.
I am interested in the Master of Social Work program with Walden University because I have always had an interest in the various aspects and components of the profession. I am interested the opportunities that a job in human services and helping profession will allow. A social work degree is accepted for a mass variety of careers and organizations. I have researched a multitude of programs that focus on Master of Social Work. After a lot of consideration Walden has my number one choice due to its accreditation with the Council of Social Work Education, and the option to study online. The accreditation that is offered through Walden is accepted in my home state of Alabama. Being able to study online was a major influence on my decision because I am a full-time working mother. Time is valuable and Walden’s flexibility allows me to further my education.
For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to pursue a career in social work. Helping others is something I have always been passionate about and I hope to be able to make a difference in the lives of those around me. Throughout my life, I have always been the person my friends would go to when something was wrong and they needed to talk. Growing up, I also experienced close family members struggle with addiction and mental health problems. I have seen how damaging these experiences can be on an individual. I have also witnessed the effects these experiences can have on family relationships. My personal occurrences have instilled in me a further desire to become a social worker.

Ever since I was a child, I loved helping others. Whether it was helping my mother take care of my little brother or helping my fellow classmates with an assignment, I was always there to lend a hand. This passion continued throughout my childhood and into early adulthood. When I began my undergraduate degree at Lewis University, I knew I wanted to help people in some type of capacity. I was guided to the path of Social Work because in this field I could combine both my passion for helping others and interest in social justice. After my first day in the Introduction to Social Work course at Lewis University, I knew that I had found my forever home. This career path would allow me to help others in a variety of different settings and capacities.
People enter social care from many different life and backgrounds. For Laura Gomez (real name is kept anonymous), the social worker I interviewed, what motivated her to become a social worker was because she wanted to make a difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the community by ensuring they get the support to live a better life. Also, the unpredictability of a social work means that social workers are never bored, because they work with all kinds of people in different situations.
A social worker has a very important job. Social workers help children and families in need of food, homes, and health care. They help children have a brighter future. There are many different types of social work. There are mental health, child and family, elementary, and high school social workers.
The reason why I am motivated to pursue a professional career in social and human services work is because I believe it is the greatest achievement that I would ever accomplish. It would make me proud to know that I am providing support; protection and safety to people that are in need. “A powerful motive for pursuing social or human service work is personal experience” (Chenoweth & McAuliffe, 2015, p. 10). This relates to my own personal experience for example when I was growing up I experienced many abuse such as bullying and domestic violence. My own mother was abused by my father and she did not have
