I took a team roles test and was classed as 19% analyst, which in relation to Belbin’s team roles is a Monitor/Evaluator (ME). An analyst has the tendency to being reserved and critical, and will react to plans and ideas in a rational and sensible way. I would most likely favour a prudent approach to matters and evaluate them according to their accuracy before acting. However, I may lack drive, and the ability to inspire those in my team. I did have a high percentage of a chairman, which is regarded as a Coordinator, so I have a strong coordinating role with an emphasis on procedures. Similar to Belbin’s theory, the Myers- Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) theory is driven by a desire to help people understand themselves, and each other better, …show more content…
Extraverts are oriented primarily toward the outer world; thus they tend to focus their perception and judgment on people and objects. Introverts are oriented primarily toward the inner world; thus they tend to focus their perception and judgment upon concepts and ideas. Sensing–Intuition (S–N) The S–N index is designed to reflect a person's preference between two opposite ways of perceiving; one may rely primarily upon the process of sensing (S), which reports observable facts or happenings through one or more of the five senses; or one may rely upon the less obvious process of intuition (N), which reports meanings, relationships and/or possibilities that have been worked out beyond the reach of the conscious mind. Thinking–Feeling (T–F) The T–F index is designed to reflect a person's preference between two contrasting ways of judgment. A person may rely primarily through thinking (T) to decide impersonally on the basis of logical consequences, or a person may rely primarily on feelings (F) to decide primarily on the basis of personal or social values. In order to understand the benefits and drawbacks of working in a team, I will be using Shinhwa, a South Korean six-member boy band as an example. Shinhwa is the longest-running boy band in the history of Kpop in South Korea, their success as a group has been said to be due to the cohesiveness of their team. An advantage of working as a team is the efficiency, by working as a team the work often gets done faster. If there are large tasks, they can be broken down into smaller assignments that are then framed out to individuals best suited for the job. Which links to the idea that within a team, members will have different characteristics and skills just as the Belbin and Myers-Briggs theories showed. In regards to Shinhwa, they compose and produce several of their songs, therefore, members would either work together, or individually to compose songs which the group would then come to an agreement of whether or not it’d be in the album. Also,as they have different skills when they are performing a song they’d split parts in terms of whose most suitable, for example Eric is the lead rapper and Hyesung is the lead vocalist, so at certain points within a song they’d take charge. Each member has different styles of singing/rapping, and

After completing the Team Roles Test and reviewing the Belbin website, the team roles that describes my personality the most is the ‘’Plant’’ and the ‘’Executive.’’ In comparison to that, in my opinion, it is important to always be open to my group members, values, concerns and goals to resolve problems. As a team member, I am highly eager to both generate and listen to everyone’s ideas. Once my group and I have listened to each others’ input, I am quick to turn into suggestions into action. When involved in a group, I contribute to staying organized, creating practical plans and being reliable. Although I like to quickly meet objectives, I tend to focus on details and remain efficient.
Jerry struggled with the MBTI assessment the most. It is interesting to note that Jerry’s MBTI score shows he leads more towards feeling and not thinking. Since he scored two points higher for feeling than thinking Jerrys personality falls between both the two with slight distinction to the other. The report shows he does not tend to necessarily base his decisions on logic and objective analysis (thinking) but on values and subjective evaluations of person-center concerns (feeing). When asked in a follow-up question if he preferred logic to value, he chose logic and when asked about feeling to thinking, he chose feeling. On the assessment, he indicated feeling as well. For complimentary based questions Jerry, responded with answers towards feeling.
Myers developed a set of four bi-polar dimensions, called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The terminal points on these dimensions are: thinking and feeling; extroversion and introversion; judgment and perception; and sensing and intuition. She claimed that a person's decision making style correlates well with how they score on these four dimensions. For example, someone who scored near the thinking, extroversion, sensing, and judgment ends of the dimensions would tend to have a logical, analytical, objective, critical, and empirical decision making style.” (www.webster’s-online-dictionary,
How I work in a group depends on the group dynamic. During the forming stages of the team I always like to take a short amount of time to see how the different roles of the team are being met and filled by others in the group before I determine which role I will like to take on. When it comes to Base on my ISI, The Belbin teamwork quiz and other personality quizzes that I have taken I can take on the role different roles depending on the needs or circumstances. According to my ISI results and other personality assessment there are three or four "Team Roles" or individual behavior that I exhibit when I work in a team. In several group projects taken on the roles as group leader. I’ve initiate discussion and ensure that everyone is included in
Prior to starting the assignment, our team completed the Belbin Questionnaire to determine our individual team roles so we can exploit each member’s strengths. However we discovered that our team does not have a healthy balance of all nine team roles as there is an over-representation of Finishers and an absence of Coordinators. In recognising this, the issue of the absence of a Coordinator is resolved by having a member that shows related potential characteristics fill this role while overlapping roles are resolved by gauging and recognising secondary roles that could be cultivated.
The Myers-Briggs type indicator is a personality test used to make the psychological types described by C.G. Jung more understandable and relevant to people's lives. The personality test shows that random deviations in behavior are essentially not so random at all, but how people use their perception and judgment. There are sixteen, distinctive personality types, that can result from the choices of preferences. (Foundation, The Myers & Briggs) “According to theory, by definition, one pole of each of the four preferences is preferred over the other pole for each of the sixteen MBTI types. The preferences on each index are independent of preferences for the other three indices so that the four indices yield sixteen possible combinations called
The second role I would assume in a team would be the idea generator. I do not believe that every idea I have is a slam dunk
I do agree with Meyers Briggs Type indicator, Intuition over Sensing. All I need is the basic information in order to make decisions. I would rater look at the big picture and save the detail for my staff to carry out my dream.
Monitor/Evaluator; these people are good on he can they up all opinions and ideas in strategic they, he can see all options and make the decision. These people can by critical and lack of inspiration, they can by sloe in making decision.
The failure and success of various project teams isn 't dependent on the level of intellect but instead on the variety of behaviours demonstrated by each individual. There are nine roles in total and each team member can acquire a variety of those roles to different extent (Belbin, 1971). My team had three coordinators; Wu Chang, Tsolaye and myself. Coordinators are responsible to delegate tasks to each member of the team (Belbin, 1971), but in my team Wu Chang was the primary preference in coordinators but she was a bit shy by nature so she coudnt step up. Tsolaye and I were the shapers and Tsolaye being the primary preference was blunt and challenging by nature (Belbin, 1971). So Tsolaye was the first one to step up and speak for the team and assigned each one of us the initial tasks to start up with the project. Moreover, as it was the first time that we interacted and didn 't know much about each other, we didn 't follow the designated roles much initially. The plant is supposed to be the idea factory, because of their creative skills. In my group Fan was the primary preference in plant and I was the tertiary preference, so Fan was able to come up with new budding ideas and was also able to build upon them because he was also the secondary preference in resource investigator (RI), and RI are also able to build upon others ' ideas as mentioned by Belbin. Fan was in short the idea generator and the executor as well. Fan came up with
Myers and Briggs (1962) developed the Myers-Briggs type indicator, a measure based on Jung’s psychological personality types, adding a fourth opposition: judging versus perceiving. Judging being the tendency to plan and perceiving being the spontaneous propensity with respects to relations with other individuals. Myers and Briggs (1962) created a different taxonomy to Jung’s. Myers (1962) MBTI states that everyone obtains a personality profile containing four letters. An example of this is that someone could be ETSN: extraverted, thinking, sensing and intuitive.
The sensing process which includes all five senses, seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and touching is the way the
Jung. The test constructed by Myers (1962). Purpose of this test is determining which psychological functions are used by individual to understand, perceive the world. In the test, there four dimensions with two opposite polars; Introversion - Extraversion (EI), Sensation - Intuition (SN), Thinking - Feeling (TF) and Judging - Perceiving (JP). JP dimension measures individual's way of dealing with outer world. EI, SN and TF dimensions of the test are independent from each other but JP dimension, which is not a part of theory of Jung's typology, is related to SN and TF dimensions. ( Sticker & Ross, 1963). When the results from each dimension summed up, MBTI determines type of the individual. Also series of studies are conducted in order to identify whether MBTI is supporting the important factors Jungian typology or not. This studies show us except a few results there are no significant support for the factors ( e.g. stability of attitudes and functions) (Sticker & Ross, 1964).
The difference between extraverts and introverts is that those who are extraverted be likely to have lower levels of self-awareness than those who are introverted. Those who have high levels of self-awareness are often more worried in social or class situations; because of this, it is very likely that those who are extraverted have a lower fear of negative evaluation (Harrington & Loffredo, 2001). For example extrovert person don’t care much about what people says about them as long as they feel happy, doing good and laugh compared to introvert person they tend to think negatively what will happen to them if they doing some activities its minimize their true potential. In very simple word introvert person have high fear of negative evaluation. They fear people judge them negatively then they tend to be shy, low confident level and just doing their work alone.
