Video Games are often in debate whether they are harmful or not, research has proven that video games can often help improve functions of the mind. “In summary, specific types of video games seem to enhance a suite of cognitive functions, some of which appear to generalize to real-world contexts” (Granic et al. 70). Although, people may think video games influences kids to enact violence, but video games don’t influence them at all, in fact it can help build skills they can use later in life. Some people see others get frustrated when their character dies, or they lost an item, or maybe even lost a kill to another player, they get over it fast and just continue their game. That frustration doesn’t mean they will enact on it and cause …show more content…
These ratings are there to help parents determine if the game would be bad for the kids or not and what is to be expected in the game. “The ratings reflect the amount of violence, sexually explicit content and profanity in each game" (“Video games ratings work, if you use them.”). ESRB ratings are on almost all games, it tells the people what to expect in the game like strong violence, gore, foul language, or even cartoon violence. Parents use this rating all the time to help avoid getting their kids a game that may cause trouble or possibly scare the kid. Some people even go by these ratings to find the type of game they are wanting. For example, if someone was looking for the type of game that has a lot of blood and gore, then that can go searching for games that have gore in them, or if their searching for cartoon games, such as Paper Mario, they can go for games rated with cartoon violence, so they can find a bit of comedy and harmless violence in one.
“Another concern about video games is that they are merely sensorimotor games of eye-hand coordination and that they are therefore mindless” (Greenfield 77). However, some video games are realistic and teach anyone skills that can be used in the real world. For example, leap pads can teach kids at a young age, and give them an early start in math, english and spelling. There are even specialized games that can help in increasing the ability to memorize and enhance
In today’s society video games have a large influence on people. We also might be driven to the point of where we are dependent on them. In fact, being so engulfed in video games could help children become more focused. In fact, parents would probably disagree and say that video games wouldn’t be essential to learning because it would probably be considered a waste of time for children and time-consuming. Parents would also disagree with the content of what is in the game, but there is a great possibility that video games could actually make us smarter. Steven Johnson explains that the games we are used to playing can improve our visual intelligence and that it would be good to learn new strategies through gaming. Video games should be an
Video games are enjoyable for people and have good benefits for children who use their multiple skills to play and interact with others. In many parts of the world, the common video game is often seen by parents as something that is wasting their child's time or “rotting their brain”. It is a popular misconception that video games are bad for children. What parents do not know is the positive things about video games. Video games have a positive impact on people and help them learn things for experiences to come. People often do not understand that violent video games are not harmful to people because video games allow people to release their anger, video games decrease crime in youth, and because they allow people to be creative and test their
Content analyses show that 89% of video games have some violent content. Half of the video games on the market have extreme violent actions toward other characters. Games, today, are allowing players to not only connect with the game physically, but also emotionally and psychologically. In essence, the player becomes the character. According to Nielson Media Research, at least 45 million households in the United States have at least one video game console (Markey & Charlotte, 2010). The average age of video game players has increased to age 34, and 60% of Americans play interactive games on a regular basis. However, researchers believe that younger children are more susceptible to the negative effects of playing violent video games compared to older teenagers and adults. Furthermore, games that include violence have raised serious concerns among
Video games help players to have a safe and healthy escape from reality. Players feel that playing video games give players a safe outlet for angry feelings. In fact, an increase in the consumption of violent video games has been associated with a decline in youth violence (Ferguson “Are Violent Video Games Really to Blame?”). This is due to the fact that video games help to fulfill the human desire for competition, especially games that center around their multiplayer modes (Marcovitz 15). Video games also give players a powerful sense of control over their situation,
Game makers have ratings on the games to warn players (or parents buying the game) what exactly they’re getting into. It’s up to parents - and parent’s alone - to decide what is or isn’t too violent.
Morality and human nature are important factors when considering the behavioral influences of video games, whether they are positive or negative. Violence in the real world involves much more complexity than any influence by the media. As previously stated, simple factors such as one’s home life, environment, and general human nature are ignored when video gaming’s influences are under scrutiny. In a world where millions of people are dying in real wars, it is a luxury to harbor concern for children to be excited after playing a shooting game (Gee). The moral and behavioral influences of any video game are left up to the interpretation of the player; there is no direct influence in any game that dictates bad behavior to their players. James Paul Gee provides an incredibly important point in stating, “Video games are neither good nor bad on their own, and induce neither violence nor peace.” It is important to consider the context of video games. In David Kushner’s article, he quotes The British Board of Film Classification’s conclusion from a survey: “The violence helps make the play exhilaratingly out of reach of ordinary life… Gamers seem not to lose awareness that they are playing a game and do not mistake the game for real life.” If a violent child did not play video games, then where would the blame fall?
I decided to research the negative effect video games have on people.Video games, especially violent ones, have become increasingly popular over the last several years. Kids will sit in front of a television for hours straight playing the same game. In these games, they kill humans, zombie, animals, and more. I’ve always wonder what effect these violent games have on people. Staring at these aggressive video games for so long can’t be a good thing. Kids find video games so addictive; they can’t put them down. This is why I decided to research this topic. To find out the different ways these games can affect people.
Video games have been argued about for decades. Some people have argued that video games are linked to violence. However, new research shows that video games can be used for therapeutic purposes, exercise, stress relievers, positive interactive learning, hand eye coordination, and different types of patient treatment for people all around the world.
In today’s society, the concerns for the effects of video games have acquired quite a terrible reputation. Worried parents around the world assume video games make their children do poorly in school, and create violent, desensitized, antisocial children. The increase in violent games, usually get the blame for aggressive behavior, shootings and violence in schools and young individuals. Most beliefs about video games effect on the brain and emotions are very common misconceptions. I strongly believe that video games are an essential tool to learning and gaining much-needed skills. When people look at the studies that have been done on video games and the brain, it will be apparent that some myths about video games have been blown out of proportion. It has come to my attention that there are studies that prove the negative effects of video games may only last the duration of game play. Kids can improve in general knowledge with educational video games like Leap Frog. Video games can train specific areas of the brain as well as increase brain flexibility and memory. Gaming actually has more beneficial effects than negative effects. Video games are excellent educational implement used in elementary schools. It is extremely helpful in brain development and helping kids with trouble reading improve. Memory retention can be improved and increased with the use of strategic, thinking games. Video games, as funny as it might sound, even promote
Ever since the video game was invented many years ago, violent, bloody games have existed also. Some include killing zombies, shooting people, and fighting that ends in either someone dying or being hurt. The outcome remains the same, and a select few continue to live out these games throughout their daily life. These games can sometimes cause people to become angry. Although, some video games may have a negative effect on some people’s lives, other reasons such as their home life can be a factor in these people’s behavior.
Video games are frowned upon by parents as time-wasters, and worse, some education experts think that these games corrupt the brain. Violent video games are easily blamed by the media and some experts as the reason why some young people become violent or commit extreme anti-social behavior. But many scientists and psychologists find that video games can actually have many benefits – the main one is making kids smart. Video games may actually teach kids high-level thinking skills that they will need in the future.
Video games can be used as instructional tools as well. They have positive elements and add value; they create a micro world of their own. The players act based on natural tendencies towards learning. Therefore, learning occurs while playing (Rosas et al., 2003).
Though video games have been blamed for school shootings and violence, they also have been proven to be beneficial for children. Video games have been linked to improving things such as hand-eye coordination, decision making skills, and mental dexterity. One study even found that “those who played video games for an average of three to six hours a day were healthier than those who played less”(Document B), proving that video games do not cause obesity. Unlike TV, video games help one burn calories due to a player’s constant involvement in the game, both physically and mentally, while you solve problems given to you and get rewarded for completing them. Video games have proven to physiologically strengthen ones morals as well. One research found that in a combat game where players had to choose between being a terrorist or a U.S. soldier, “those who took the role of a bad guy often felt guilt over the virtual bloodshed they committed and exhibited greater moral sensitivity than those who played as soldiers”(Document A). Although there was violence in the game, this shows that the game did not influence the players to kill innocent people, but that by killing a terrorist was not an act of murder but more an act of protection and safety from a bad guy. Players being terrorists therefore felt sorry for being the bad guys and did not feel good when killing a U.S. soldier because he was viewed as the good guy. By doing this, players are taught to not be bad people and to also
This is a true indication that violent video games trigger the minds of the players that life is like a video game and everyone has to die thus, makes them less concerned about other people’s opinions and also how they feel. Violent video games are associated with antisocial behavior in the player and this contributes to youth crime cases due to the attraction to violence they get after playing such games. According to Perlman (1957), these games are said to be excellent training tools. The continuous exposure to shooting games increases aiming accuracy in firing. Exposure to the games makes one acquire character traits similar to that of the character in the game. They want to get associated to the game character by doing what the game character does in the game be it killing or damaging
Technologies have helped people to think beyond their capabilities and create new forms of technologies every year making learning easier. Video game is a product of modern technologies. The main purpose of video games were to entertainment the people. Well, this is not the case as new games have their own new purpose. Different purposes creates different effects on gamers specially children. It can be both positive and negative as it depends on the game children play. As video games have helped children learn more efficiently, engage them in their spare time and increase their several problem-solving skills, video games helps an individual to develop.
