A registered nurse’s earning vary depending on the position, experience, level of profession, skills, education, assignment with some states paying a higher income. The skills acquired through education, training, and expertise contribute to a registered nurses (RN) wage. Nurses having additional education such as a Bachelors degree or Masters, earn more than a nurse who has an Associates degree (A.S.) or an entry level nurse. But experience also plays a role in the amount earned as well as location. The highest paying states are California, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Alaska and Nevada; this is due to a higher cost of living. RN’s normally receive pay by the hour but this is not always the standard. Nurse practitioners and advanced nurses frequently receive a salary and in some cases these nurse “can bill the insurance company for their services” (Greenwood, 2014, para. 1). This can fluctuate with accordance to the employer and state. Nurses can operate in differsfied locations such as a nursing home, hospice, hospital, psychiatric, mental health, emergency room, operating room, pediatric, physician office, government offices, public health, forensics, schools, prisons, and outpatient. There are specialties such as working with cardiovascular patients, icu, critical care, pediatrics, and may work from a distance, such as a home health worker or traveling nurse.
