During summer, many students forget what they learned the year before, and teachers must review material done last year. People in year-round schools believe that because of the shorter breaks, teachers have to spend less time reviewing material, and can move forward in their teaching. According to the National Education Association, “one of the main reasons for switching to year-round schools is to improve with student academics.” Although there is no proof, many schools believe a year-round schedule helps improve students academic skills.

If there is year round schooling, there is a higher potential level and students would benefit from having year-round schooling. Have you ever found yourself in the same schedule? Repeating almost the same day over and over. Students with traditional scheduled schooling have to go 70 plus days before just a short break. If we had year-round schooling the most we would have to go to school before a break is 45 days. Plus students would be able to advance more quickly, teachers would be happier, and our school would have a higher grade point average. Year-round schools first started in major cities or towns like, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Buffalo and Detroit. But, Los Angeles has the most year-round schools, over 500, in the nation. And there are only 10% of public school students who attend a year-round school. This can be beneficial for both teachers,students and even the families involved. The dropout rate is 2% lower than traditional schools( Niche ,2016). The absence rate is also lower, about 1% lower to be exact. This type of system can increase the school building capacity which means there’s no overcrowding. More education would be provided to lower income families or a child that is disabled. Studies also show that year-round schools have higher test scores than traditional schools. In America most public schools go to school on a 10-month system established when America was mainly agriculture, and the children had to work in the fields during the summer. Year-round school was first used in the early 1900s to fight overcrowding and underfunding. It wasn’t until the 60s that year-round school was used again when a school in California became the first school to use it since 1904. I believe that the school schedule is fine the way it is. Some of the cons of year-round school are students can’t have summer jobs, most programs such as lunch and buses cost more, and extracurricular conflicts.

With students taking classes all year round they are constantly using their knowledge and adding on to it, making it awfully difficult to forget. The best way to teach and to learn is to use a year-round calendar system that benefits students’ achievements and teachers’ motivation” (Lyttle) With the U.S. Department of Education having this information and studies to back it up they should be enforcing all public schools to switch over to year round schooling. All Schools should be year round because it could help the students academically. Also they won't forget what the learned.But also it lets them have more separate breaks then just one big pointless break. Statistics show that if you have one big long summer break you forget what you have learned. Because kids show up to school on the first day and forget what they have learned the previous year. So if those kids had school all year they could’ve had a better memory of what they are learning.

My school is considering going to a year round schedule currently, students have core classes on A or B days for the entire school year or a full semester. The school year starts in September and ends in June.
