The debate of whether going to college is worth it began when the colonists founded “New College”. It was later renamed to Harvard university. Colonists produced nine colleges that are still operating today. Some of the nine colleges are Princeton University, Yale University and Brown University. Back then, the main goal of college was to produce Christian gentleman who would take over their family businesses. Now college is for an education that will lead to a job/career. In 2015, there is 20.2 million people attending college and there is an average student debt of over $28,950. The debate is still going on today. It is not all about getting a degree in college. College provides a variety of opportunities for students. Some of the opportunities that they provide are study abroad, work study, Making money and how much they are making is one way people determine if they are succeeding in life. It is one thing that everybody wants in life and looks for in a job. Imagine hearing that as a student who just finished four years of hard, grueling, expensive work; or, even worse, as parents who paid for their child to finish that same grueling work. If college is supposed to prepare students to be immediately productive members of the work force, that statement could unfortunately be accurate. In other ways, however, that statement can't be any further from the truth. College can prepare a student for life in so many more ways than for a job. As a student myself, I can see how college can be both wasteful and enriching. I often find myself in my studies asking, "How will this help me later in life?"
