Some students would argue that taking a foreign language class in high school would not benefit them after graduation, as they plan to study a major in which being multilingual is not essential. This may seem reasonable as some majors, such as cosmetology or psychology may not ever use a foreign language nor require further study of a foreign language. However, studies have shown that studying a foreign language builds more skills than just language. Memorization, critical thinking and interpretation skills improve immensely in those students who take a foreign language class in high school (“Benefits and Opportunities” 1). Students can then use these skills to improve academic performance in other areas, improving overall college success.
There is no doubt that learning a new language is one of the goals and priorities people aspire to, and it is a fact that achieving so is not easy. The difficulty of this matter varies from person to person. This variation depends on the motives and means which each individual intends to use throughout his or her learning journey. The motives that drive a person into learning a new language carry a great deal of importance within. For example, people who learn a new language for travelling and tourism, or just for the love of it, would probably have more capacity to absorb and remember what they have learned over the people who are being forced by other people, or the educational system into learning.
One of the best ways to learn languages is to go out and speak them. When you immerse yourself in the foreign language, you not only learn quicker but you also learn about the cultural references and nuances.

Many people believe that learning a second language will help modern people a lot in their professional careers and it will bring more earnings than someone who can speak just his or her mother tongue. For this reason, to learn a second language seems to be important. On the other hand, quite a lot of people have a different point of view. They claim that it is wise to invest in something else instead of learning a second language : studying and achieving a license for their career. There are two reasons, why the people disagree with that. First of all, it is useless for career goals. Many recent studies have shown that there is not much correlation between a second foreign language and personal income. According to Albert Saiz, an economist at MIT, the income of a bilingual is almost the same as someone who can speak just the mother tongue. Only a 2 percent wage difference was shown(Stainburn). They have to spend a lot of money and time for years with only 2 percent profit. Investing that time and money elsewhere will help more people in their career. Furthermore, it is not just a matter of wage. Some people who know more than one language do not have a huge advantage in the employment market. Many large international companies already have branches in other countries. The business world is much more complicated than the thoughts of the public. Some mistakes can be a big loss to a company because of that exact
In my opinion a good language learner should be motivated, stay consistent with the study of the language, be patient and okay with making mistakes, and communicate and speak in the target language. Rubin (1975) listed many learning strategies that a good language learner should have, and some of them are similar to those characteristics that I thought about. One important strategy that I think ANY language learner should use is "willing to make mistakes in order to learn and to communicate" (Rubin, 1875, p.47). When I started to teach Spanish 101 to students who had never studied a foreign language, I told them that it is normal to make mistakes and we are all there to learn. I was trying to encourage them to speak and feel comfortable in the classroom. When I think about myself when I was learning a foreign language, I remember being afraid to speak because I could make some errors. However, I understand now that errors are part of the learning process, inevitable, and there it is okay to make mistakes.
