Earlier epic stories, long before Beowulf, include The Iliad and The Odyssey. In each of these epics, like Beowulf, a bard or scop reminisces on the past and tells of great heroism. Epics were created to give the reader—or listener, since epics follow the oral tradition—a sense of ethical values. Epics are a long narrative poem featuring heroes, battles, and great accomplishments. All three epics follow a similar structure: a hero goes on a journey, fights in battle, and receives glory.

As the characters, Beowulf and Aeneas are similar in that they both worship a deity or deities, the characters also experienced similar events that demonstrated courage, such as Aeanes going to the underworld to meet his father, and Beowulf battling devil like monsters. The characters differ by Aeneas having a destiny to fulfill to find Rome, while Beowulf was fulfilling a debt to Hrothgar, while in the book the Aeneid the Gods interfered in Aeanes’s human affairs (purgatory) and Beowulf was displayed as a Christ like figure.

Beowulf and Achilles are both heroes that have been in many battles in they time on this world but they were very different types of heroes with very different traits that made them heroes. Beowulf was self-less, fights fate, and calm will on the other hand Achilles was hot tempered, accepts fate, and selfish. Even with all the things that are different between them they had one big thing that both of them had braver which was one of the things you need to be a good hero.
