Earlier epic stories, long before Beowulf, include The Iliad and The Odyssey. In each of these epics, like Beowulf, a bard or scop reminisces on the past and tells of great heroism. Epics were created to give the reader—or listener, since epics follow the oral tradition—a sense of ethical values. Epics are a long narrative poem featuring heroes, battles, and great accomplishments. All three epics follow a similar structure: a hero goes on a journey, fights in battle, and receives glory.
One major difference between the three epics is that Beowulf is set in a simpler world. Both The Iliad and The Odyssey contain multiple books and secondary storylines and focus on a multitude of characters, including gods and goddesses. In the works of Homer,
