Besides The Enjoyment Of Helping Others, I Want To Become

Ever since I was little I can always remember telling myself I wanted to grow up and make a difference in the world. Even today I still feel as if I want to pursue in a career that will give me the ability to help people in need, share my ideas and work within a community setting. Based on the self-assessment results I was given the field of a human services assistant. As I have never done any research or have any basic knowledge on this field I am very interested in understanding how it works.

The purpose of this interview is to explore human service professional in their work environment, and observe human service professional in their particular settings, what type of education is required for their position of choice. The human services profession has a variety of populations that they serve; this is a wide array of people. Human service professionals serve populations such as, high-risk mothers who may have shortfalls in education, psychosocial, nutritional, and little or no transportation. Another is the homeless population, lack housing due to being unable to afford, or maintain safe and adequate housing. The elderly is a population that is increasing, there needs range from chronic illness, lack of or little education,

I have discovered that a benefit of going to school at a later stage in life is that I have had time to discover who I am and what is important to me. Every time I have thought about what I want to do with my life, it has centered on helping others achieve their dreams and goals. Human services is the right academic major for me because I am ready to make a positive impact in someone’s life and want to equip others with the necessary tools to do so. I am excited to be part of their journey to betterment, healing, and self-sufficiency.

All my life my parents have taught me the value of helping others. Having different experiences and growing up in an atmosphere where the need of others were put before our own, led me to have a desire to be a social worker. Believing that being a social worker involves many special skills, as an example one of those that u need to interact with people from different cultures and principles than me. The field of Human Services is wide and varied umbrella of smaller sections. Growing up in America has been one of the most unexpected and surreal experiences. I am only twenty three years old but being from the Big Apple, New York and being raised by single parent, nothing in my life has ever been a walk in the park. I am considered a minority because I am Puerto Rican and African American and it has always been tough for me living in such an urban area. Not having the best financial status is what made thing even harder. My mother had to struggle to make ends meet for me, but we made it and are still making it. The specific area of interest within human services is mental health facilitation. I was raised in a household where all adults were involved in health care in one form or another. My maternal grandmother was an LPN and my mother is a Mental Health Counselor. Of course, my mother’s interest soon became my own, which inspired me to volunteer at mental health organizations even at the age of ten, where I spent my afternoons with helping with children suffering from mental retardation. An additional factor for my career decisions was, at the age of 21, I was diagnosed with Bi Polar disorder with suicidal ideations. 1. After completing a semester of field education, what are three reasons you would like to pursue a career in social work: a. One reason I learned that I want to became a social worker after our first semester is that it is a diverse career. My background and passion in life has always been working with the elderly population however, I accepted a position at DHHS working with foster care and child protective services. Knowing that this would make me more diverse and knowledge in different ways to future employers and for me. b. Another reason why I would like to pursue a career in social work is that it is challenging.

Majoring in Human Services/Social Work has always been a dream of mine. I have always wanted to help people who are in need. Life can definitely be rough, and can throw anything at any time, even when you aren’t expecting it. Whether it be financial problems, emotional problems, or mental problems, life can begin to take a toll on people. In particular, I am leaning towards working with children or adults who have mental health issues or have problems with substance abuse. With the possibility of possibly helping people who come from broken families or homes.

For a majority of my life, I wanted to be a pediatrician when I grew up. I had wanted to be a pediatrician due to my passion to work with children, in addition to enhancing the lives of children. As I continued to grow up, I realized that science is not my strong suit and I would never survive medical school. I do not recall how I learned about the profession of social work, but around the eighth grade I have known that social work was the profession that I wanted to pursue. The idea of helping others is what initially struck me as compelling because I did not understand social work in it’s entirety, but I knew that I would relish a life of helping other individuals.

Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions. Working as a clinical social work has my interest because it does not put limits on what I can do or who I can help, and it will set me up for my future goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Being my own boss and changing my community is my dream job, opportunity and goal. My vision of the social work field is being able to help people in need and being the person that people can look back on and remember as a huge help in time of need. I think my core values and beliefs will help me be an effective social worker and help me succeed in this field. It is in my belief that a person should never be knocked down when they are going through hardships, and rather empowering them. I also believe that not everyone could be a social worker because it takes a certain kind of empathetic and self-aware person. I truly believe that my upbringing has humbled me to understand and not be judgmental of people’s issues since I’ve seen a lot in my short twenty-one years.
