Beth Sholom Synagogue The Beth Sholom Synagogue is a Jewish congregation with a conservative background that was founded in Philadelphia in 1918. The synagogue is considered by many to be Frank Lloyd Wright’s most expressive house of worship. The name of the synagogue translates to the “house of peace” in order to honor the ending of the War. Originally the congregation was created in the Logan section but later moved to Elkins Park in Pennsylvania right after World War II. In 1951 the Beth Sholom center opened in Elkins Park, meanwhile services were still held at the original building. Two years down the road, Frank Lloyd Wright was persuaded by Rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen to accept the commission to design his first and last synagogue in his …show more content…
Sinai the mount of light. When asked why he chose white glass for the tower, Mr. Wright replied, "Let God put His colors on, for He is the great artist. When the sun shines, the temple will glitter like gold. At night in the moonlight, it will shine like silver. On gray days it will be gray. When the heavens are blue, a soft blue will cover the building."(Wright) The fountain that stands before the entrance of the synagogue represents the Laver that was in front of the ancient tabernacle. The Laver which derived from the word “lave” or wash, was where the priests would go and wash themselves before entering the sacred space place and worshiping and praying. In the period of the tabernacle, the Priests would greet people who came and left the sacred place with his blessing, therefore Wright thought stretching the canopy as a representation over the main entrance as outstretched hands was a good idea. Cohen wanted Menorahs to be visibly seen from the synagogue so he had Wright place seven divided menorahs on the three ridges of the building which can be seen from every direction. Furthermore, the Menorahs lift their arms as if they are in prayer to represent the Menorah as a central symbol. From an aerial view, one sees an esthetically wry hexagon. Many have asked Mr. Wright why he chose a hexagon as the form for his design, and he quoted Deuteronomy 33.27 using his hands to represent the …show more content…
The “Sisterhood Sanctuary” is an auditorium that holds approximately 250 people. The sanctuary is emphasized with different plants in large containers, and glass doors that make up the entrance of the sanctuary. Wright created the “Sister Sanctuary” in order to achieve the mood and presence of harmony and peace while people are in meditation and in prayer. On the east side of the sanctuary a magnificent Ark of the Torah is placed in wood with light shadowing the top of the Ark. Robed extravagantly in many color mantels, the Ark holds seven Torahs which represent seven days of the week. The seven Torahs represent the seven days of the week crowning in the holy Sabbath. One of the most important features of the Synagogue is this ark that holds a very important message for the congregation and well as the heart of Judaism. One of the prominent features that takes over the synagogue is the massive Monolith that suggests the shape of the Ten Commandments or the tablets of Law. This is important for many reason, the most important being it represents the teachings, morals and values of
The Arch provides one of the few contemporary depictions of Temple period artifacts.[6][7] The seven-branched menorah and trumpets are clearly depicted. It became a symbol of the Jewish diaspora. In a later era, Pope Paul IV made it the place of a yearly oath of submission. Jews refuse to walk under it.[citation needed] The menorah depicted on the Arch served as the model for the menorah used on the emblem of the state of Israel.[citation needed]However, when the existence of modern State of Israel was formally declared, the entire Roman Jewish community spontaneously gathered by the arch and in joyful celebration, walked backwards under the arch to symbolize beginning of the long-awaited redemption from the Roman Exile.[8]
The ancient tabernacle of Moses was a sacred and holy place for the people of Israel. It served as a tool for the people to remember God and to look forward to their promised Messiah. The tabernacle was so integral to the lives of the Israelites that they even built the tabernacle in the center of their encampments during their journeys (Yom Kippur). The tabernacle also served many purposes for the Israelites in their rituals, ceremonies, and beliefs of their religion. Many practices that the ancient Israelites performed in and for the tabernacle anciently, may seem peculiar to the modern thought process or many beliefs today. The main focus of the tabernacle was the day of Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement. On this day, the Israelites would gather and watch as a high priest performed the rituals in the tabernacle that would rid the sins of the people of Israel. This day and ceremony was a very important aspect to Israelites’ beliefs and the tabernacle was the main tool for their ceremonies. The tabernacle and the day of Yom Kippur served many purposes in helping the Israelites to remember their God, learn from symbols, and to help them strive to obey their God’s commandments.
In my experience at first progressive Baptist Church I was very much out of my comfort zone because not only did I not feel as welcomed but it was a little awkward because of all the looks I was receiving. I felt I was not dressed as they were and felt as if I didn't fit in and right away I just didn't feel appropriate with my attire. While I was there I actually had people wanting to shake hands and asking me questions about me coming and there was one man who just stared at me and so it was uncomfortable and didn't know how to react. While I was there I started to notice that there is a little difference from the church I go to and the music was way different as well, everyone will talk back with amen or thank you Jesus. The difference
God gave instruction on how to build the tabernacle to Moses first, which gave the commands to the Israelites. He told Moses, “…make a sanctuary, and I will dwell among them.” (Exodus 25:8). Seven pieces of furniture sit in the Tabernacle. Each piece of furniture symbolizes the Lord Jesus Christ in this way:
The First African American Baptist Church was originated in 1773 under the leadership of Reverend George Leile. In 1775 of May he was ordained as the pastor and December of 1777 the church was officially consulted as the body of believers. During the decades of slavery in America, slave association were a constant source of concern to slave owners. Religious exercises of slaves were closely watched to detect plans for escape or insurrection. African-American churches showed an air of militancy in the eyes of white Americans. Insurrections such as Nat Turner's in Virginia, born out of the religious inspiration of slaves, horrified white Americans. Understanding the potential end which could result
When it came to early Jewish art, Jewish law had forbidden the worship of idols, which was often a common subject when it came to art during this time period. However, artists continued to depict symbolic and narrative Jewish subjects, which they often drew from earlier traditions from the Near East and Classical Greek and Roman Art. After all, Jewish history was not something that had recently developed so the art involved could of been traced back to the Hebrews. In relation, the wall painting, Ark of the Covenant and Menorahs, held in a Jewish catacomb most likely derives from the ancient Near Eastern Tree of Life, which symbolizes the Jewish people at the end of exile and at the beginning of paradise.
Wayland Baptist isn’t a big university as in matter of fact the main campus is in Plainview. It has a community of 25,000 on the high plains of west Texas between Lubbock and Amarillo.
Did you know that, “54% of homeless shelters are youth shelter”?(Emergency homeless shelters in the GTA)The majority of Toronto’s homeless community is youth based, so care for them is extremely important. Their future is on the line if they do not get the help that they need. Covenant House and Horizons for Youth (HFY) are two very popular youth shelters, but the things that are important when a youth is looking for a youth shelter are; what programs they offer, the location, and the choice between an abstinence based system or a harm reduction program. Covenant House offers the superior service when it comes to all of these things.
Located at 90 Hasell Street in the historic district of downtown Charleston, remains the second oldest synagogue in the United States, the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim synagogue. The original building has been rebuilt and modified several times throughout history following damage done by catastrophic events such as fire, earthquakes, and vandalism. The KKBE has not only served as a place for worship, but has provided a haven of security and prosperity for the Jewish community in Charleston for centuries. In addition to its religious importance, the synagogue itself is a quaint and beautifully crafted building representative of Charleston’s religious architecture in the 1800’s. The synagogue’s style fits effortlessly into the city’s cultural
For this assignment I took part in a religious service at a small Orthodox Church in Baltimore.

On November 22nd I went to Brooklyn Tabernacle with my best friend and her mother. I knew prior, going to this service would count as legitimate performance so much so that I could write a review on it since firstly, I remember whilst watching Obama’s 2012 inauguration ceremony on television that this church choir performed and phenomenally at that. I also knew the gist of what to expect in view of the fact that the two that I attended the church with, regularly attend Brooklyn Tabernacle’s Sunday service.
The Mosaic Floor of the Beth Alpha Synagogue (p. 219) is a beautiful example of a mosaic with panels that portray the story of The Metaphysical Realm, The Celestial Realm, and the Terrestrial Realm. The Torah allowed images as long as they weren’t worshipped. Placement of images on the floor demonstrated that they were not worshipping the image itself. In contrast, the Christians banned images of the cross on floors so that they were not tread upon.
covering the Sistine Chapel are nine scenes from the Book of Genesis including: the Separation of Light and Dark, Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Earth, Separation of Land and Water, Creation of Adam, as well as the Creation of Eve, Temptation and Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Sacrifice of
Chartres Cathedral is one of the most significant achievements of all the historical architecture. Additionally, it is entirely preserved with its original details. The unique features of the cathedral are intact, and thus when one visits the place, he or she is likely to encounter the authentic architecture work as it was done many years ago. Chartres Cathedral symbolizes an atmosphere of awe and holiness (Katzenellenbogen, 2). As such, it was built for religious purposes. However, it attracts the nonbelievers as well. As a holy building, it has many glass windows to light the building. Due to its height, a double flying buttresses is used to support the high nave. The cathedral was the first building in history that used buttresses since it was considered as necessary for the peoples’ culture and as a sign of authority. It was built to reflect a symbol of power since the religious leaders engaged in politics too. The cathedral has many statuses that represent the Biblical aspects such as Elijah, Isaiah, John the Baptist, Jeremiah, and Simeon (Katzenellenbogen, 9). The standings portray the Christian faith that was used by the architectures while building the cathedral. The interior floor stands thirty-six meters high and is one hundred and twenty-eight meters wide. The sizes show how vital it is and it can host many peoples who visit for religious functions.
