Bethany Hamilton: A Brief Biography

Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer who survived a shark attack in 2003 which resulted in her left arm was bitten off but, ultimately returned to her love of surfing and was victorious in later professional surfing competitions. She was home-schooled from 6th grade and went back to school for high school. She was raised into a Family of surfers and started competitive surfing at age 8, but her career was held back when a shark bit her arm off at the game of Thirteen. At age Nine she was offered a sponsorship About her love of surfing.

Before Thanksgiving Bethany went back to the beach for the first time since the attack. She was very brave going back to the beach after what happened. Even though the shark could still be there, she wouldn't let that stop her. She started walking up to the water, her freinds and family cheers made her feel that she could do this even more.

“I was just attacked by a shark!” An elite thirteen year old amateur surfer had just got attacked. Bethany Hamilton was at the beach with her best friend Alana. While surfing Bethany got attacked by a tiger shark! The sharks bite off her arm. Alana’s dad Holt took control while Bethany was in a state of daze, but Bethany stayed calm. Bethany resilience will later take her far after becoming an amputee.

Bethany Hamilton showed great resilience in overcoming a shark attack in order to achieve her dreams. When she was thirteen years old, Bethany was attacked by a fifteen foot tiger shark. The shark seemed to be attracted to her watch on her left arm. She lost her left arm and was unsure if she would ever be able to surf again none the less become a professional surfer.

Every three out of ten swimmers are involved in a shark attack. Bethany Hamilton is a shark attack survivor, but her arm wasn’t. Hamilton, a surfer and competor since age five, was surfing in Hawaii on Halloween morning. Before Hamilton knew what happened, she noticed her left arm was missing. Hamilton survived and was back on her board in weeks.

A thirteen year old girl named Bethany Hamilton was an up and coming surfing champion. On Halloween of 2003, all of that could have changed. That day, Bethany was surfing with her best friend, Alana, Alana’s brother, Byron, and Alana’s father, Holt. While Bethany was patiently waiting for the perfect wave, she was attacked by a fifteen foot tiger shark. The shark, attracted to her watch, came up from under her board and bit off her arm. Due to the fast reaction of her best friend’s father, Bethany survived the attack. But, because of her strength to overcome adversity, courage, and determination, Bethany Hamilton is the perfect example of resilience.

Bethany Hamilton is a brave leader, who has faced many challenges, and left a legacy to her home town. When the shark attack had occurred. Bethany knew she would have a wide variety of challenges to face. Some of which were, cutting vegetables, tying her hair up, putting her bathing suit on, and playing her ukulele. Although, that did not stop her from surfing. She overcame those challenges, and showed to never give up. Bethany Hamilton has to have the most strongest personality, I have ever seen. She has left a legacy saying, it's ok to be different. Even though, bad things have in life. That was god's plans for us were and we need to accept them. Choosing an individual that has overcome adversity was difficult because there were many options. When reviewing my options, I realized Bethany Hamilton was my best choice. She is known as the “Soul Surfer”. She is not an elite thematicization, or famous artist, or even a freedom fighter but she is an inspiration. Bethany was just a teenager who had a lifelong dream of becoming a pro surfer. One day she went surfing with her friends and left as a victim of a violent shark attack that took her left arm. It took a while but this attack did not break her spirit or faith.

Bethany Hamilton is a courage’s girl. Bethany had the courage to forefeel her surfing dream. She tried over and over more than seven time. Because she wonted to complete her dream to serf also Bethany won the teens choice award in 2004 for courage. A year later she won first place at the National Championship. That was all a award for the way that she handled the hole thing.

Bethany showed great courage on working to get right back out on the water and do what she does best

Her best friend Alana was also passionate about surfing they both competed together and Bethany placed first and Alana third. They day of Bethany’s dad’s knee surgery, Bethany and Alana go surfing, and as Bethany sits in the warm water, a tiger shark approaches her and rips off her left arm. On the morning of October 31, 2003, Bethany went out to surf at Tunnels Beach in Ha'ena with her best friend, Alana Blanchard, and Blanchard's father and brother. While lying on her board,she suddenly felt intense pressure on her left arm and was pulled back and forth for a few seconds. Originally feeling no pain, she noticed the water around her had turned red, and her friends realized that her left arm had been bitten off nearly to the shoulder. The process of healing after that was challenging and hard for her, but she overcame it with her faith in God and hard work.

Bethany Hamilton said that If she wanted the change of what happen she said that she would allow the shark attack to happen because she knew that god let the attack happen.

“Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you” said pro surfer Bethany Hamilton, a girl who never gave up on her dream of becoming a professional surfer. She was also a girl who overcame a huge obstacle in life of only having one arm starting when she was only thirteen. Instead of giving up, Bethany used her tragedy as a way to encourage others.
