She is a courageous in what she does. She has other amputees looking up to her in a very special way. Bethany wants other to not let being an amputee push them away from doing what they love. In this novel, 17 year old Mia Hall has the perfect life with a great family, amazing boyfriend, and an up and coming career as a professional cellist. This is taken away from her when she and her family get into a car accident. She loses both her parents immediately, and her brother is left in a critical state. The accident leaves Mia trapped outside of her own body, and stuck with the decision to fight to stay, or to give up and go. In the novel, Sarah a ten year old girl is introduced. Sarah lived in Paris during 1942 when Hitler demanded that all Jews be arrested and sent to concentration camps. Most of the Jews had no information on what was going on, especially in France where the French police rounded up all the Jews and brought them to concentration camps. Major conflicts arise in the novel because of character’s lack of knowledge. The movie Girl, Interrupted is based on the memoir written by Susana Kaysen. In this film, Susana Kaysen, the main character is first introduced in the hospital where she was taken shortly after overdosing on aspirin and alcohol. Despite taking a whole bottle of aspirin and alcohol Susana claims that it was not a suicidal attempt. In the hospital scene, there is also evidence on Susana’s wrist that she is what is known as a “wrist banger”, Susana claims that she does this because there are no bones in her hands. Shortly after, Susana is evaluated by a family friend and former psychiatrist and is strongly encouraged to check herself into a mental institution not too far from her, by the name of Claymoore. At Claymoore, she is evaluated by psychiatrist Melvin Potts. He asks her why she took so much aspirin and she replies that she wanted to make the time jumps, depression, and wrist banging stop. Susana is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder once she arrives at Claymoore.

She considers her style of painting as a contemporary, and her works range from gender and sexuality to social and political issues. Her art is showcased in cafes and small venues throughout Stockton, Ca. The untitled painting, which is one of her early works, is painted in dark colors of grey and black portraying a figure sitting alone on a dark and stormy night. That day, Bethany was surfing with her best friend, Alana, Alana’s brother, Byron, and Alana’s father, Holt. While Bethany was patiently waiting for the perfect wave, she was attacked by a fifteen foot tiger shark. The shark, attracted to her watch, came up from under her board and bit off her arm. Due to the fast reaction of her best friend’s father, Bethany survived the attack. But, because of her strength to overcome adversity, her courage, and her determination, Bethany Hamilton is the perfect example of resilience.

Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer who survived a 2003 shark attack in which her left arm was bitten off. On the morning of October 31, 2003, Bethany went out to surf at Tunnels Beach in Ha'ena with her best friend, Alana Blanchard, and Blanchard's father and brother. While lying on her board,she suddenly felt intense pressure on her left arm and was pulled back and forth for a few seconds. Originally feeling no pain, she noticed the water around her had turned red, and her friends realized that her left arm had been bitten off nearly to the shoulder. The process of healing after that was challenging and hard for her, but she overcame it with her faith in God and hard work.
