Freeman currently teaches first grade in the South Bronx. She holds a degree of Bachelor of Science in 2004 at Delaware State University (Major: Psychology & Minor: English Education) and holds a dual Master’s of Science in Early Education/Students with disabilities at Mercy College in 2008 (Bronx, NY). Starting from the teaching assistant, she has with her sincerity and loving nature achieved many awards in teaching profession. Dean’s List, Teaching Ahead and so on awards are under her belt in her small, but effective, almost 11 years, work experience. Moreover, Teaching Assistant and NYS Teacher Certification are two other appreciations she has acquired. She has a natural aptitude in superior interpersonal and communication skills to foster meaningful, spirited and affectionate relationships with students, staff, and parents. S is a 59 year old African-American female born and raised in Anson County who has attended several institutes of higher learning. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Secretarial Administration from Barber-Scotia College, she later received special education teaching licensure from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Because of her love for learning, S has also taken online classes through the University of Phoenix. She has been a secondary special education teacher for three years and currently works with 8th graders at Anson Middle School.

My contribution to NYC public schools children in education has been extensive. I first began working in NYC public schools as a speech pathologist in 1980. I would examine expressive and receptive language skills of children and through task analyses develop strategies of language acquisition. In short, I was able to gets students to improve their reading and writing skills in order to master grade level competencies. In my educational journey, I was recruited by Principal Louis Rapport to become an Assistant Principal. Principal Rapport ran an after-school program for teachers who wanted to become school leaders. I worked in coordinating summer programs at George Westinghouse Vocational High School in 1986. I worked hand in hand with the principal to build community partners for our school which offered twelve or more trade programs and internships for students ranging form optical to jewelry making. In 1989, I was selected to serve as Assistant Principal of Special Education at Automotive High School, with Principal Steve Gilbert, who has since passed away. Principal Gilbert much like Principal Rapport was my mentors in leadership within the educational arena. With the support of Principal Gilbert, I was able to go to a Harvard Graduate School of Education and participate in a Summer Seminar in 1995. This was the season of “Inclusion in Schools”. I am Carla Sittig and have taught for 19 years. I began my teaching career in Louisiana where my husband and I are originally from. We moved to Texas in 1998 and in 2006, Hurricane Rita prompted us relocate to Raleigh, North Carolina. We have lived in New Bern since 2008. My experience includes elementary, middle school science, publications, video productions, and school level tech facilitator. I served as a media coordinator for the past three years until moving into the role as a Digital Teaching and Learning Coach for Craven County Schools. My husband and I have two children. Our oldest attends ECU with only three semesters left and our youngest is a senior in high school.

I have been working with the Coweta County School System since August of 2000. I began as a paraprofessional working with students with Autism through the Emory Autism Program. I enjoyed working with special needs students so much that I entered the TAPP program to obtain my teaching certificate. I began working at East Coweta Middle School in the fall of 2002 and am still currently working there as an interrelated special education teacher. I have taught resource, collaborative, and co-teach classes. I have even had one year where I worked one-on-one with a student that required specialized instruction.
Joni had worked for over 25 years in the local school system as an Educational Tech II, otherwise known as a teacher’s aide. In this capacity, she got to know generations of teachers, students and their families. In addition, working with high needs students with challenging intellectual disabilities, she sought to identify opportunities for her students to gain practical knowledge in local organizations and life skills to ensure their dignity as adults. To create these connections she often interacted with numerous small businesses, non-profits, and community-based organizations.
For this assignment, I chose to interview Ms. Lisa Parker, who is a Math co-teacher and resource teacher for grades K-5 at Krahn Elementary which is a part of the Klein Independent School District and is one of the teachers I have been observing for my field experience. Ms. Parker has been a teacher at Krahn Elementary since 17 years. She started as a 1st grade teacher and was moved to 3rd grade after three years. The administration saw that she was really good with management and math, so she was given the below average, special education students and kids with adaptive behavior after seven years of teaching. With this, she adopted a style for teaching kids with special needs and decided to get a certification in Special Education. Ms. Parker has been teaching specifically in Special Education (SPED) since five years now and the special populations served by her in Krahn elementary include Gifted and Talented students (GT), students with Autism, students with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), students with Learning disabilities (LD), students with Other Health Impairments (OHI) and Emotionally Disturbed children (EBD)

As an educator, Carolyn’s passion and determination stemmed from life experiences and was fueled by dedication to her family. Despite the hardship of having to drop out of school her junior year of high school to take on the resposibility of earning a living to support her family, Carolyn was persistent in obtaining an education. Through the GED program she was determined to receive her diploma while working two jobs as a teeneager. After the birth of her first child, she knew that she needed to further her education to become a role model for her daughter. The desire to provide a better life and become an inspiration is evident as she continued on receiving multiple degrees, all the while continuing to hold down a job, and reaching the zenith after obtaining her PhD in Educational Leadership.
Throughout my education career at Texas A&M there have been a few different significant educators that have peaked my interest. My focus in undergrad was English/Language Arts and Social Studies for middle school, but as I’ve learned more through my graduate degree I’ve become fascinated with the idea of different types of schooling and the lower level grades. For example, I never heard of an open concept classroom until my first graduate course. Once I heard this idea I’ve been researching and looking up alternative education models, such as Montessori, with interest in maybe teaching in this type or another alternative school eventually. In addition, I’ve researched how educators began to create certain “levels” in schooling based on age, and focused in on kindergarten. My very first job in education was with kindergarten and I was always curious to know how this specific “pre-school” level of education was brought into existence. This time in a child’s life is crucial to their success because they are building a foundation for their future career in school, and I want to learn more about it. The following is my research on Maria Montessori and Frederick Froebel, two significant educators with an impact on the field of education in alternative schooling and kindergarten respectively.
