I have been a preschool teacher, teaching mixed age children from 18 months to 5 years, for over 10 years. I started as a work study employee, while attending the Community College of Philadelphia in 2006, to a part-time teaching assistant while attending Temple University in 2010. This led me to a lead-teacher position after graduation and then to a program coordinator. I have developed effective working relationships with children in the past years. As part of the degree requirements of the Bachelor of Arts in Consular and Diplomatic Affairs program, all CDA students must—before graduating—complete 500 hours of practicum work. Implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has afforded many individuals the opportunity to obtain health insurance, and many of the newly insured are seeking medical services at the same time a primary care provider shortage is unraveling. This is a great time to be a nurse practitioner, as we will be expected to fill the primary care provider shortage gaps. Upon successful completion of this graduate nurse practitioner program, my main focus will be shifted towards obtaining certification in order to be eligible for reimbursement from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
My name is Brittney Duffy and I transferred from the financial assistance department at Metro. I have been employed with Baptist for 3 years. I started off as a CNA at the heart hospital Downtown and transitioned into the patient financial department in 2015. I am currently working on my Bachelors at FSCJ for Supervision and Management and I will graduate in summer 2018. I am extremely excited to be joining the BMDA team and am looking forward to starting this new journey in my career.
For years, I have always wanted to be either a nurse or a doctor and being in Health Science One and Health Science Foundations has brought me to learn new things over time about the body and its functions, medical terminology, and getting certifications for different things in healthcare. Having the opportunity to be in the CMAA class would teach me everything I need to know if I were to work in healthcare in an office setting. I am great with people and working hands on in a doctors office will give me a full view on what it’s like in the real world.
Looking forward, I hope to bring my understanding of and appreciation for complexities to Washington University School of Law. My diverse identity and experiences have taught me to approach people and situations with nuance. I grew up between a large Hispanic family and a predominantly white, well-educated community. I have grown up between the culture of the progressive and diverse D.C. and the conservative and homogenous Midwest. While challenging, living between distinct groups has showed me that life is more in the middle than anything, and the truth usually lies there as well.
My experiences working with children officially began in 2012 when I started working for One of A Kind Progressive Early Education. I worked with children of all ages, primarily toddlers and preschoolers. While working at One of A Kind, I assisted the lead teachers as much as possible. I helped develop daily routines of activities, lesson plans, nap, and toilet-training times that seemed most effective for the students. I worked with parents during pick up and drop off times to make sure they were happy with the schedule and care their child was receiving. I was in charge of maintaining a safe environment for the students at One of A Kind.

They are what a good Early Childhood Educator and Professional looks like. Although we all know the same theories and practices we all have our own opinions and perspectives. This essay is an amalgamation and reflection of my own thoughts on these components that make a good professional in the field of early childhood education.
