The biopsychosocial model and the biomedical model are long-standing theories that describe how an individual's mental state affects their physical health. The biomedical model has been used in Western medicine for a longer time compared to the biopsychosocial model. However, the biomedical model health in a fashion that separates physical health and mental health. This model says that the two do not interact with each other in any way that will affect illnesses. The biopsychosocial model connects physical and mental health saying that they do have an effect on each other. Poor physical health can lead to poor mental health, and vice versa. The biopsychosocial model has become more accepted in recent years as physicians and psychologists have discovered how environmental factors influence health. While both are scientific models, the biomedical model is more focused on developing new medicines and cures to treat illnesses while the biopsychosocial focuses on better ways to properly diagnose patients (Engel, 1980). In this way, the models interact with each other. The biomedical model will discover the biological issues that can be cured, which allows the bipsychosocial model to properly diagnose individuals and give them the correct treatments. While the biomedical model and the biopsychosocial model have their differences, they are both accepted by today's society. The biomedical model does not include factors other than biological ones, while the biopsychosocial model does include them. They both involve science, but the biomedical model is more treatment based, and the biopsychosocial model is based on diagnosing patients.
